  • We get the usual cliche's from the total spectrum of politics here. Yes, Jimmy was a Stalinist by being a member of the Communist party but I doubt his involvement in trying to save thousands of jobs allowed him much time for a dialectic debate with others on the left wing - like myself - who despised Stalinism! He was too busy trying to protect his people, from dickheads like the Nationalists here.

  • Free to starve

  • pompous vs boorish. god im proud to be british lol

  • @madcapoperator If you think Reid was a boor you know nothing about the man. He was a true intellectual with a deep and wide knowledge of philosophy, politics, economics and literature (indeed he had a documentary series about Scottish literature, "Reid about Scotland" in the 90s/ 2000s).

  • Let us all help to speed the day when this wonderful earth and its rich resources are held in common for the benefit of all humanity.

  • totally selective socialist pish!!

  • Jimmy Reid puts his case very well. It has to be said he was doing something practical in 1971, namely saving the livelihoods of shipyard workers while in 1971, Kenneth Williams was making the latest piece of Carry On drivel.

  • A good counter argument put forwardd by Comrade Jimmy!

  • Jimmy Reid was a Stalinist. As a Stalinist he sold out the working class.

  • @AggiedeLampedusa Are you really saying that people are as simple as box A and box B? Im a nationalist therefore I must be a nazi... try to put a bit of thought in your comments instead of just whatever bile you happen to have been browsing on the internet that week or your opinions on things you hardly even understand

  • Wheres Kenneth's reply? Would have been very interested to hear what he had to say, I've seen the response video, but there aren't many videos of Kenneth speaking about such topics so I'm fascinated!

  • @Crankcase Jimmy Reid left labour to join SNP when he saw the party become neo con in the Blarite ranks. He wasn't dogmatic to the party but stuck with his principles. Arthur Scargill believed that the means were necessary to an end and was dogmatic in that regard even though he was loyal with it. Jimmy held 'work ins' in a non-violent way and proved everyone wrong. Jimmy didn't betray his own, he just lost faith in Labour because they did, and he criticized Scargill on the same method.

  • aye free tae starve !!! yes the rich love their freedom cause they have the money to enjoy it , freedom is as jimmy said an abstract concept.

  • I never did anything, and nor did Jimmy Reid as it was not his remit. He concentrated on issues he knew a lot more about.

  • @iaindvc44 - Apparently you’re not worthy of an opinion without any direct involvement in the subject, ask CrankCase his views on WW2 and he will no doubt mention his storming of Dunkirk then winning the war single handedly.

  • Very decent man Jimmy Reid

  • This is fascinating, any chance of posting the whole thing?

  • Jimmy Reid, an intellectual and humanitarian. A man of integrity. You will always be remembered on the Clyde. Rest in peace.

  • @iaindvc44 - Jimmy Reid a man of integrity? Don't make me laugh. He was a treacherous windbag - he betrayed the striking miners by writing articles criticising Arthur Scargill and the strike in The Sun. He took Murdoch's money to do his dirty work on behalf of Thatcher. A complete scumbag.

  • @CrankCase08

Now Arthur Scargill, there is a proper scumbag, who is extremely worthy of the criticism given him by Jimmy Ried. The man is a headcase.

  • @iaindvc44 - So what did you ever do to help the miners strike?

  • @CrankCase08 - Completely inaccurate... do you know what 'being dogmatic' means. It means being loyal to an ideal, establishment or party, trade union whatever no matter what, never criticizing, because you believe in the idea. Jimmy described the communist party as 'dogmatic' but never betrayed his own principles. He was not afraid to criticize his own when they were wrong but still remained loyal to the cause of socialism. It's a pity that the right coined on it though when he did do this.

  • @CrankCase08 Being dogmatic leads to lemming behavious - it's the reason the world is in such a state, it's the reason why Maggie was allowed to destroy half of the UK (some tories like Heseltine hated her, and others in silence thought she was too ruthless to working people). Being dogmatic led to the credit crunch, corporate zombies just obeying what managers told them. Labour's war in Iraq because MP's were to frightened to stand up to Blair (ironically he is a neo con c**t).

  • @CrankCase08 Arthur Scargill had his faults but he was a decent person. I've spoke to lots of people who knew him and remember him well.

  • @gonzoman1001 So where is the inaccuracy within may statement?
