  • MARAVILLOSO,BELLISIMO...

  • You are so exceptional. I've listened to other Wurlitzer performers and they don't hold a candle to you. You really use the whole instrument. Thank you so much.

  • great to see that a young guy like you(i'm 62) can play a machine like that!

thought it was something lost in time already!

  • @begay2 It's such a lovely music. I really hope they will be ALWAYS people who are able to play a Wurlitzer <3

  • JMHO- But Compared To The Mighty Mo. In The Fox Theatre In Atlanta. Well It Just Dont Compare lol :-)

  • Wow! Imagine if you had a better sound system Mark! ;)

  • Wow dude, you are Awesome! ;-)

  • this is the 1st time see a organ in such design

  • your plying is as lovely as the instrument. So many registers and so many keys and can only play 10 at a time :) Thank you Please post some more!!

  • wonderful playing and such a wonderful sound!

  • Come on, guy. How about making some more recordings. Even with your built in laptop mike. Great srugg!

  • Wow!

  • hmmm nice organist :)

  • so this is where the music comes from in the merry-go-round!! oh okay!! it all makes sense now!!

  • anyone have any good sheet music similar to what is played here? this blows any other version i've heard way out of the water.

  • Holy moly, how do you know what to do with all of that!!!!Wow

  • Excellent performance. I only wish that the sound was better because I have a good system here and didn't even get the basenotes.

  • Wow Oh WOW !! I always wondered HOW MANY instruments it took to play that POWERFULL Music.. Now I know its only ONE HUGE one and a MASTER that controls it ! This Mark Herman is in comparison to a Lion Tamer , Mighty Warrior, watching him Take Full Control of that Massive Instrument. I as many Know ,when those tones reach into your ears and deep into your soul ,The Music and Instrument sends your feelings into a tailspin --i can Just Imagine HIS feeling as he hits the 1st chord

    ,,,,ITS ALIVE"

  • I was privileged to meet and hear Mark Herman play this past Saturday (8/13/11) --- I cannot tell you how magnificent his music is. I could have listened all night!!! If you ever get the chance to hear this Master, do not pass it up!!!

  • That was awesome!

  • Bravo Mark! That brings back memories , how long have you had command of such a wonderful instrument ? I remember the organ rising from the stage in my local Cinema! It was always a thrill and it still is. your playing is first class, BRAVO!

  • Wow what a sound!

  • a wonderful lost talent - that many no longer posess or appreciate - great job!! Hope that you continue to play for many years.

  • So where is Mark Herman now? In this ridiculous world of Karaoke & American Idol nonsense, hopefully there are still some of us who appreciate his awesome talent and musical interpretive skills... Has Mark done any recording besides what's available here on YouTube...???

  • There is some out there, remember there is of course the american guild of theater organists to help keep awareness and a future for the theater organ in america, though very few know how to nor want to play the organ anymore, now its all synthasizers and electronic insterments, which are good and all but nothing like a live insterment like the origional synth the theater organ.

Still fewer that have the skills to play a theater organ and bring character to the music, aside the classical organ

  • Dude....the amount of switches and keys are just mind blowing.

  • This sounds wonderful! I had a cousin named Mark Herman in CA! (:

  • Well done, sir.

  • Great! This song is the theme tune for The Organist Entertains radio show here in the uk. Your version really swings. :)

  • Excellent playing, and especially for such a young guy, you are very talented. Your style of playing reminds of a 1960 record I have had for many years titled Gus Farney at The Giant Wurlitzer pipe organ named the Colossus. The recording quality of your laptop is good, but it can't quite pick up the powerful low end of the pipe organ. Those huge Wurlitzers do have an amazing low frequency.

  • I can still recall the organ arising from its receptacle before the stage in many cinemas in GB.Unfortunately,by the time I was old enough to appreciate this music most of them had been removed.Plus ca change!

  • Mr. Herman. You need to record professionally. Absolutely. :)

  • Ok, that was very good... now let's do it once more-- only this time in just your boxers and socks and pick up the lighting just a bit.

  • Really excellent playing, friend!!!!

  • Had no idea Ronnie O'Sullivan could also play the organ lol

Sorry for the joke but certainly remarkably performed this song.

  • @carlosroberto366 Yes and I hear he plays snooker almost as well.

  • Just fabulous !

  • where can i get the sheet music for this. plz

  • I don't care if it is on your laptop --- it is excellent! I would love to see/hear you in concert!!! Thanks for sharing...

  • "It's the Organist Entertains. And here's our host, Nigel Ogden!"

  • Outstanding! Thanks for posting

  • How do you young kids get to be so damn good? :D You and Jonathan Ortloff should go on tour together, lol!

  • who is this kid and where can i get more info on him? awesome job!

  • Just an old granma who LOVED this rendition of a Cole Porter classic. You are an amazing talent, young man!!

  • Wow - what a joy it is to listen to this wonderful gorgeous organ and watch it being played by a master. I am so jealous as I think I am doing great with my big ole organ which I've played for years but can't compare with this treasure. Music by the great Cole Porter is the best. Thank you for this terrific entertainment. - Paula

  • Keep in mind that an organ has foot pedals also. This may be what you are hearing as an accompaniment. On an organ like this you have many assignable options. Great playing!

  • 1:40 -- sounds like the music you would put to somebody slowly taking their cloths off... love it!

I do have a question: Now, I have only played a two-manual Wurlitzer Theater Organ, but what is the thing that is in the center of the organ below the majority of the stops (or tabs, or whatever you want to call them) that keeps moving up and down, especially during loud parts?

  • Comment removed

  • @Zylstra555 They are indicators for each of the swell pedals.

  • My dad used to rebuild pipe organs for a living. He told me the area where the special effects like the tambourine, glockenspiel, various whistles etc was called the "toy store". Keep in mind these were all analog devices operated by air pressure. He even worked on one theatre organ that had a real washboard as one of the toys.

  • I wonder how Such a young person was able to learn. thats what I want to do.but where do I get a Mighty Wurlitzer? O_o

  • HolyReverberations, Batman - You Done Good! Really Nice rendition, Mark.

Q?... Have you ever heard Geo. Wright's Wurlitzer-take on the novelty tune: "ROLLERCOASTER"* ? ... I have it on one of the trillion-year old VinylLPs in my bulging, dearly-pampered collection- (but can't acces the LP right now). Would love to HEAR it again. Lemme know if ya feel like digging up 'Rollercoaster'. Folks LOVE its "big" feeling. (PS: I lived IN Piedmont, in 1980. Heaven) --I am Jony.

  • Absolutely superb .. thank you for sharing .. wonderful

  • This is the only theatre organ version I can find of this track on here. Can anyone point me towards another? It's the theme from "The Organist Entertains" here in the UK from BBC Radio 2.

  • What can I say, except you are the new George Wright, brilliant orchestrations - let's have more postings please.

  • "A Kid In the Candy Store" and "Premiere" are two of Mark's CDs you won't want to miss! Mark is stupendous! Google him!

  • breath-taking! thanks for sharing! :D

  • Fabulous!

  • Awesome performance, its a pleasure to listen!

  • I was at one of his Chicago concerts.and I played open console

  • Mark, thanks for posting! I like what you bring to the table known as theater pipe organ!

  • we had a 4 manual robert morton at the Saenger theater here in new orleans. but katrina took it away......

  • Kachoo...Kachoo....on the last comment

  • Mark, what a great rendition on a fabulous instrument....BRAVO!

  • RAY BOHR?! Just noticed the comment prior to mine! Mr. Bohr was and continues to be a major inspiration of mine! His comments are "...like apples of gold in frames of silver!" [Uh... that's not an original simile.] Thank you, sir!

  • Magnificent sense of harmonic progressions and internal thematic material! He's a genius!

  • Beautiful playing, beautiful sounding pipes and a beautiful console, all on one! Brings back so many great memories. Keep it up Mark, the theatre organ world needs new and talented people like you! BRAVO!

  • friggin awesome

  • I would love to be enthusiastic about this piece but why can't YouTube synchronise image and sound???

The sound is more than 2 seconds late!

  • Whether it be the organ or the organist, quality always shows. In this case it's both!

    Wistful

  • Wow, Mark you are awesome, not many young men play the Theatre Pipe Organ, most all is electronic. LOve the sound of that organ.

  • That was fantastic, wish I was there to listen to it!

  • Dude........your incredible! I loved it!

  • in a word. Brilliant! 5 stars!

  • Wonderful!!

  • is that an original installation for that organ?

it almost looks like a FOX special console.but at 41 ranks that is a large spec. organ.

  • No, this is definitely not an original installation. The nucleus is a Publix 1 Wurlitzer from the Toledo Paramount, with a ton of additional Wulitzer pipework to make up 41 ranks, controlled from either of two available consoles. The console seen here is from the Center Theatre in Rockefeller Center, and is a duplicate of the Radio City consoles. The Toledo console is somewhat smaller, being a Publix, but much more ornate.

  • Maravilloso

  • Hi Mark. Forgot about this. I remember we sat your computer on a ladder to record this. See you at MM.

    Best Regards,

    Tom

P.S. Your new CDs are EXCELLENT! I highly recommend them for those who are interested in hearing theatre organ at its best.

  • Wow amazing

I would be happy to be playing to 1/2 of your standard on organ

  • Lovely sound you've got coming out of that thing. I like the reed at 1:30.

We've got something similar in the old Fox in Detroit (half an hour up the road from me)...unfortunately, she's not nearly so well-kept, the console needs restoring, the pianos are horribly out of tune, I think the posthorn died and went to heaven, and half of the traps are horribly unresponsive.

  • Nice playing. I enjoy your selection of ranks during the song. I've got a 3/42 Wurlitzer in my home

  • Nothing to apologize for Mark ... really fun to hear and watch. Thanks for posting and sharing your great talent and this amazing instrument.

  • A young talented artist----the envy of all!! Thanks for sharing!

  • You is a every congratulations

  • He will be performing in concert at my high school on sunday, March 22.

  • well your extremely lucky! please record it!

  • he is great what a fantastic performance

  • I have to say, several months ago I ripped an mp3 of this video for my theater organ playlist.

It is still one of the best and most entertaining recordings I have. Bravo.

and ENCORE! (seriously, more videos would be greatly appreciated)

  • Awesome!!! You are a Great organist Mark! Hope you make more vids!

  • Mark, Please dont take this video down ! It is excellent.

  • Always a pleasure to hear a great theater organ played as well as this. Have many LPs of such I have collected since I was a kid. God bless the musicians and organ builders.

  • My respects for your Musicianship, you are a very talented artist. I congratulate myself for having the opportunity to live this experience, no matter the sound quality. Thank you, very much.

  • He woudld be the perfect guy for me as i play the organ aswell. If only he was gay!!

  • Comment removed

  • Looks like bobb'n'neil (get it) has some issues on accepting his own homosexuality. Calm down mary, your comment was out of context nancy. It IS my business if he's not gay, he wouldn't have a date with me, so I have to know if he's a fruit.

  • reminds me of old zelda music for some odd reason...

    good job.

  • who is this guy!! Why is he not famous!

  • Yeah he's as cute as he is talented!

  • @4freespeech fail

  • @4freespeech ditto

  • This Guy is AMAZING! In his 20's and plays like a re-incarnation of Jesse Crawford?! If I was in my 20's and he was Gay, I would marry him!

  • well that must be a really good organ or a really good laptop mic you have there

  • It's arguably the best theatre pipe organ in the western United States, and perhaps the best tuned and maintained in the USA. Owned by NorCal Theatre Organ Society in Berkeley, CA.

  • haha i really want to

  • Organ is voiced in a amazing good way.

Organist is sometiems a bit off , but over all I like him even better then the same piece by Jelani !!

  • WOW!!! ur awesome!!! keep up the good work!!!

  • What an IGNORANT comment!!!

  • lol oh lighten up hes a friend of mine...joke. get a sense of humor haha

  • Wow - absolutely fantastic arrangement, and really using the

Wurlitzer to it's best. Please do more videos, the sound was

amazing for a built-in lap top! Hope you do a concert here

    in CT.

  • it sounds like carnival music, but it sounds very fun at the same time too

  • everything is nice ;) Organ, music ánd organist :)

  • Fantastic, I'd almost forgotten the Wrulitzer at the RKO Keith and the Center Theater . . .

Let the mighty not be forgotten.

Mark, you really are a pleasure to listen to.

    Thank you.

  • For a built-in laptop mic, that sounded pretty darn good! The sound was great, I really admire your playing. Keep us posted on your progress in theatre school in Chicago. I'm confident you'll do some great things with your future!! Jeez, wish I could get a chance to play an organ like that!!

  • EXCELLENT!!! Absolutely FANTASTIC playing!! What a magnificent console too.

  • Wow, great job. Loved the music and nice video. Keep of the great work. Like I told another performer, do more. Love hearing the Wurlitzer Pipe Organ. Hope you go far with this talent. I hope to someday to hear one of these Pipe organs live.

  • Oh go ahead and remove it. Just kidding :-). Mark, this is a great video of a great organist and great organ. I agree with all the other folks, please leave it up. The audio is just fine. When this console was attached to the "original" Center Theatre organ, I played it for several years when it was installed at the America on Wheels rink in Alexandria, Va. The organ was owned by my organ teacher, the late Jimmy Boyce. So, besides your fine playing, it brings back some very nice memories.

  • This is absolutely brilliant! Like so many others have requested, please don't remove it. I'm curious as to whether or not this is your instrument or if you had to hunt one down to play? You truly deserve to own your own. I've shown many of my friends this piece, and like me, they were all dazzled. Keep up the good work....and keep bringing joy to others through your music.

  • @scotland4ever00 This young guy plays like an old timer!

  • What an AMAZING TALENT for someone barely 21 yrs old! And to love this classic music too? Wish you would do a concert in Indianapolis, maybe at my theater? The Hilbert Circle downtown, INDY? They just installed an organ recently.

  • Wonderful!

And you call this poor audio? Trust me, I've heard FAR worse.

  • Mark, You can't remove this! It gets me going when nothing elase will! Look forward to seeing you in August! North Tonawanda Riviera WurliTzer for ever (home of that great instrument!)

  • Awesome Mark!

  • Great job Mark. You are extremely talented. Thanks for the video.

  • Mark, I took time to read all the comments while I listed over and over again, and I found one that said you were thiking about taking this video off. Don't you dare!! I mean, there's people from UK, Australia, I'm in Mexico, listening to you. I don't know if you've done international tour yet, but your name is already know by people in countries you've maybe not even been to. If I ever see advertising for Mark Herman in concert I won't hesitate a bit. So please, don't delete, rather share, pls!

  • brilliant!

  • AAA 100% A # 1 dude... keep it up

  • Great job on this video.....I LOVE organs. I have my organ skills to thank for being able to pick up on playing the campanile in Berkeley.

  • I hope more young people will come to love theater organs and keep the tradition alive. Sadly, I've seen organist playing to...dare I say it...video presentations of silent movies. Let's keep the film tradition alive as well.

  • Very nice rendition and WurliTzer console...Reminds me of...

  • Mark,

Great job! This console looks like a late model Wurlitzer. Very similar to Radio City in NY. Is it in it's original location or has it been transplanted from another theatre?

  • Mark,

Great job! This console looks like a late model Wurlitzer. Very similar to Radio City in NY. Is it in it's original location or has it been transplanted from another theatre?

  • This organ isn't original to this auditorium but this Theatre was originally built to house a theatre organ so the acoustics for it are pretty spot on.

  • ...also this organ was originally in Toledo, OH.

  • very nice, it must be really hard to play a theater organ? How long did it take you to learn?

  • very nice, it must be really hard to play a theater organ? How long did it take you to learn?

  • Awesome! Great Job. Wish I could play organ! (Xylophonist and Pianist) Thanks for sharing!

  • Mark- Great piece! You did a fine job at 4-6-08 JATOE as well. When others mention "something accompanying" you, they might be hearing sounds created by "second touch" on a manual, a logical oversight since it is hard to see the subtle extra movement to engage the second voice.

  • very good!

  • Mark, looking forward to seeing and hearing you in Indy this summer !!

  • WOW! Actually it sounded pretty good on hi def (add &fmt=18 to the end of the link)

Love the sound quality! Great job!

  • I only meant that I heard something else playing with you, whether it be a drum set or something. Perhaps its the organ giving you a beat. I'm not sure. I know i heard a drum set, but i think i heard a couple orchestra instruments as well. Maybe not. Anyways. Still great playing.

  • Yes, that's the beauty of a theatre pipe organ, it sounds like many instruments. A great one-man band. Thanks for your kind words.

  • There is something accompanying him. I can here it. I think. And i dont mean the percussion.

    Still great but.

  • I'm not sure I understand what you mean. I am the only musician playing here. Keep in mind that the sound is slightly out of sync with the video due to youtube's idiosyncrasies.

  • Very nice.

Mark, I think you have the heart for the theatre organ, man! Check out "Leon Barry" on YouTube for a past master of the Theatre Organ, too. I think Mark has an interesting journey coming up...!

    :D

  • Hi Mark. I just happened to see you playing in this clip on You Tube. Great to see a talented young guy like yourself playing such a mighty instrument with such talent and conviction. Kepp up the good work. More such talented young people like yourself are much needed in this industry to keep the dream alive.

    Kind Regards,

    Barry Streete,

    Newcastle,

    Australia.

  • Absolutely MARVELOUS! Mark, I got to hear your concert in 2007 at the Elsinore Theatre in Salem, OR. You were amazing then, and you continue to add to your superb game!

  • p.s. I was involved with the NorCal ATOS chapter when this installation was ongoing (in other words, I cleaned pipes, moved stuff for those who knew what they were doing, vacuumed chambers, etc.). Of course, this meant I got to attempt to play this beast, too :)

  • This is wonderful. Seeing this console brings back memories. I played the organ when it was still the original Center Theatre instrument when installed in the America on Wheels roller arena in Alexandria, Va. The organ belonger to Jimmy Boyce (my organ teacher).Bill Brown purchased the instrument in the late 70's after the rink closed. It was to go into one of his pizza parlors, but that never came to be. He broke the organ up and the console now resides in Berkeley. Wonder video Mark!

  • In response to someone's statement that this sounds like Jelani Eddington's arrangement, let me add my own statement. I do not think it sounds like Jelani's arrangement at all; THANK GOD! The man plays with no emotion, life, spark, and everything sounds over-practiced. This young man has potential to escape that. A few more years, and some "maturing" both in playing and in attitude, and he "could" be something special.

  • Mark, excellent job! Quality of video not bad for just using lap top. Keep up the great work. It's very refeshing to see new talent entering the genre. Enjoyed having you at Berkeley Comm. Theatre. See you at the convention in Indiana.

    Best Regards,

    Tom

  • This is the first time I've seen a Wurlitzer with pistons above the Solo Manual, below the lower stop rail.

  • That was original to the organ -- 10 general pistons! The console is from the Center Theatre at Rockefeller Center.

  • The two Wurlitzer consoles in Radio City Music Hall also have this feature. Though built by Wurlitzer, Radio City and the late Center Theatre organs were originally designed by Kimball but built by Wurlitzer in 1932.

  • Great organ Mark and I like your b5 and Sharp 10th at the end. I wish we had an organ like that in the UK.Superb playing and registrations.

  • Jelani Eddington does an arrangement of this song.

  • Beautiful! I've heard this arrangement before, was is Lyn Larson? Fantastic work!

  • No, this was my own arrangement -- although I messed up a little in a couple places. Thankfully this was during the practice session and not the concert!

  • Did you record this on an album? I swear I have this recording (even registered the same, for the most part) in my music library, but I have no artist written for it. I'd gladly put your name down for it. It's an impressive piece!

  • I have never recorded this. I'd be interested to hear the recording!

  • Ah I found it, it was Jelani Eddington on the 4/26 Wurly in Long Island. The more I listen though, the more his sounds different, lol. You both play it so darn well!

  • I just had a listen to his arrangement -- there are some similarities in style and arranging, but alas, not nearly identical.

  • It is really odd that the sound is slightly off from the music. I may be removing this shortly.

  • Youtube does that sometimes when it converts the file, I wouldnt worry too much though, it sounds just superb, 5 stars and added to my favourites without doubt. Keep up the excellent work.
