I think after a while everything will go over internett when the speed is so fast its no point in having a high spec pc cuz your phone will have the powers of a super computer :)
I think if there was some kind of partnership between Steam and Online, it would make a good combination. Use the onlive feature to try out a game for half an hour, purchase it through steam or rent it through onlive. With that people can't use 'I pirate games to see what its like and then buy it' excuse anymore either.
It's not really that gaming in general is more socially acceptable, more like certain genres are socially acceptable. Someone who play's CoD people won't think much off, but if you play something like WoW or Final Fantasy some people will still see you as awkard and nerdy. It doesn't bother myself much at all, when someone calls me a nerd a just jokingly say "Please, I wish i was smart enough to be a nerd."
While my grandmother had no interest in playing games, she is interested in seeing them, because she's fascinated by how far they've come and what they are capable of. Even subpar games I can't stand are so impressive to her. It makes me realize how jaded I and many others are. We're complaining about a world we've been given to explore we would never have otherwise had. You can be a war hero, a god, a zombie killer. And we whine about they're still not good enough. God how childish...
It might be aimed at people who hardly ever upgrade their pc. We've come to a point now where most applications on an everyday pc don't really need more cpu power: web browsing, office apps, playing music. Any 5-year old cpu can handle that. So someone with a 5-year old pc could just get onlive, instead of buying new hardware or a new pc.
Gotta say I actually rather enjoyed this mailbox. The topic of playing games at certain age is definitely interesting, my mother keeps asking me "When will you grow out of gaming?". Well, my answer, just like TB's, probably never. Gaming is something I love and something I've been with ever since I was a kid, and I couldn't care less about social stigma either, so... To the poster of the question especially, don't get pushed by others' opinion on how you spend your free time, man.
I disagree with TB on the on live thingy, maybe younger gamers who can't afford a high spec pc wants to play battlefield 3 for example. I actually experienced it myself when I found out that my pc can't run BF3, I was heartbroken and when a service like this offers me a chance to play BF3 instead of saving up to about 1000 pounds.
@TheBaggy1337 I've heard that BF3 hasn't been announced for OnLive because of the relationship between EA and OnLive... If you researched this and can prove me wrong, can you show me? I'd be interested to see it.

(p1)onlive are for people like me people that pay more for games then most of you due to tax and what not but we do have our entire country covered in 16Mb speed wifi (it will be upgraded to 40-60 by mid 2012) while it might be true that the picture is in a losi form (i know nothing about video so i cant say)i would hope the tech evolve as more people buy into it...and just think about it if onlive become's the go to place for your games
Onlive will have exclusives and the one that Steve Perlman stats will look like avatar when it comes out in 2012 and he states the best 2012gaming pc will not come close to have the power of running that game. That reminds me Onlive hardware is like comparing a Toyota mini van to a NASCAR in graphic power Ver a PC and yes onlive is the NASCAR.
@TotalHalibut Your logic on this matter is is way off. I'll tell you who they are targeting MR totalfailbutt. I will not upgrade my pc for $200+ just to play a $60 pc game for a year and then more costly upgrades, i do not like console games anymore and i want to play PC games on my TV or tablet (never ever needs upgrades) and fyi if you buy a hard-copy of a new released game (deus ex3 is the first) and if its on onlive you will get the full play-pass code with it so you will have both.
@TotalHalibut : people who are running Linux and don't want to pay for a Windows License might be interested by Onlive, provided they do support Linux...
An onlive-ish service on steam would've been nice. Simply Steam + the possibility to play from anywhere and on basically any machine, but maybe not as crispy.
The only way I see this Onlive business model work is through rental services.
I don't think people will be willing to pay a full game price just to have access to it when certain conditions are met, such as having a high speed connection around. You don't own a license of the game and cannot download it on your PC.
It will be great for monthly renting, because it allows you to try all these games out before you buy them or play them until you acquire a good enough PC/Console that can handle them
@AfterStarX When you buy the hard copy of a game you do not own the game (license) you only own the CD and you can buy hard copy's and get the onlive Ver free. Get out of the past and live in the present. Like i said in my replay before this one, onlive will have exclusives that put pc/consoles to shame. The cloud is in and hardware is out. Full price for onlive games? mmm no. I spent $34 total and i got assassin creed BH, metro2033, just cause2, silenthunter5, batman arkham asylum + more.

Every mac user should have onlive tbh they can't play shi"t anyway so ye this would be great for them, and ye mac users should be able to afford a good connection :P
3:15 well said. Speaks my mind exactly :D I involuntarily clapped hehe. I hate it when people talks during a movie. Unfortunately my family and my college roomates LOVES to talk during a movie :(( I began to feel that I'm weird for not talking.
You say its no use to you, and that may be true now, but, in the future:
1) Would you rather spend hundreds on upgrading your PC in the future to keep up or just use that money for games? I personally pick the latter.
2) Consoles do have used games, but with the sales Onlive has, which are similar to Steam, why would you need them?
3) Your argument applies to alot of stuff. Netflix because someone doesnt have dvd player. Smartphones because someone doesnt have a computer. Both have exploded.
That said its cool that you like some of the features. I see your point on why most wont need the service, and that is correct, but the same could be said of Steam when it first came out, noone needed steam, they could just buy discs for the game. Now practically everyone who games on PC uses steam and its smashing the pc retail market, because of the convenience due to no more store visits or shipments or discs. Onlive adds convenience because no installs or downloads or platform restrictions.
Another thing to consider is the Playpack discount of 30%. If you're subscribed to it you get 30% off all purchases. So a $50 game for $35. Say someone that may not be able to run the game at high/max specs could pay $35 or $60 to play on Console. Yes, there is a little sacrifice due to the video stream, but later on I could buy the game cheap for under $10 3-4 years down the road when I have a PC good enough to run high/max or get it used on console for that and still end up paying less.
I use Onlive because my pc isn't high end nor am I going to upgrade any time soon because of budget and I want to play some of the games on there now without using up hard disk space AND I do not really like playing on a console as much as pc. I also like the chat and the feature that allows you to watch other's play on the service. As for buying a game on it's own? Not worth it for me because I don't keep it yet I paid for it. 10 bucks a month is kinda eh but I have some fun and I'm not alone:)
I try to get my Dad/mom to game with me but my mom doesn't know what the heck Cod or Battlefield is, and or is How it is played. My dad know some but he won't game...
I <3 the noob trynd that keeps trying to focus karthas. That is the dumbest idea I have ever seen a LoL player have. Other than not warding of coarse.
onlive - as i listen to you talking about it, i wonder - couldnt it be the ultimate marketing platform? you program your game for whatever hardware you want, publish on onLive, people can try it out instantly without downloads or ANY traces on their computer, no installs or uninstalls... and if they like it, they buy it and download it whole... that's the way i could see it working, but then it would make more sense to monetise on "advertisers" and keep the user-end free
i think im going to show this to my family, they hate on video games... but LOVE when im down in the living room watching TV and i hate it because we dont talk :/
@MasterCheif0300 i have this about every thing. my family keeps complaing we don't speend time together... well maybe i'm rea<lly the only one noticeing the pattern but for the love of god we do not talk when we are together.
what is the point to force the family to eat together if it's not to talk over dinner?
@theguyyouhate my family used to talk together but now they moved a TV into our kitchen so we just stare at it, and ofc they get to choose the channel and i HAVE to stay otherwise im unsocial... every time i see my parents they are either, doing chors, sleeping, or watching TV completely silent. And they say they dont have Time for video games... i think most parents should see gaming as a media as well as tv. We dont just sit in front of a screen, we actually think and socialise :3

In my country you are a nerd if you are bad at DotA or CS 1.6 or never have played it games are a very important social medium here.....the country is Serbia.....
Books is a limited form of media, yes, but so are video games. Books can do some things that video games can't, for instance are books generally way, way, WAY better at going into the heads of the character(s) in the book. In video games you rarely ever hear what the character is thinking as you go, because quite frankly, there's no really good method of conveying that through video/audio as of yet.
Games are also limited when it comes to visuals. A game simply can't look as realistic as a film
@Jostedalsosten They can and do, most of the time. Just look at the graphics of Battlefield 3. And if you're talking an animated movie, that's even more realistic of an idea. Just look at a good family game, little big planet 2.
Games can still portray the character's thoughts, as well as look as good as a film, maybe a little less realistic, but more extravagant special effects (Because they don't have to be possible to do outside of games).
@c0d3w0rd Sure, but you will have to agree that games such as Skyrim and BF3 can't match the visuals of a fantasy or war film. When I made the comment earlier I thought it was obvious that I excluded animated movies, as they are not about realism.
It's definitely a subject of debate, but in my opinion games and films have up until this point failed at doing so. That is not to say that you don't explore the characters in dept in these media, however they do so in a different manner.
@c0d3w0rd Where a book conveys a persons thoughts more directly, a film or game might show this through facial expressions, subtle remarks and such. While this is a viable way of doing so, it still is a non-verbal form of communication, which, inevitably, means there's less detail. Books are superior in this regard, but films are superior in a different regard, just as games are superior in yet another area. Which is *the* best medium is a matter of taste.
@Jostedalsosten Around 55% of all communication is body language. Don't quote me on the exact statistics, but that's something that games and movies have, given that they do it right.
@hlsghost Sure, I know about that, but body language isn't enough to see what a person is thinking. In a book you can get that conveyed exactly as it is thought, word for word. There's no room for misconceptions. If body language was sufficient we would all know exactly what everyone else thinks all the time, and it's pretty obvious that we don't.
Don't lie to me all LoL gameplay is bad not just dominion. /fan flames. I'm super biased, everyone can enjoy what they like to not my job to convince them to play other ARTS/MOBA games. But HoN/DotA/DotA2 are more fun to watch. Ofcourse i just watched this and then changed tabs like it was an audio podcast.
Dear TB. I know you wont read this but i wanted to say it anyway. One of the demographics that OnLive is appealing to is me, a young adult who doesnt have enough income to buy a gaming PC, and am stuck with a mac. Onlive allows me to game with my friends, and its awesome. So there ya go.
@MegaYognaught well if u have a pc congrats on having to upgrade all the time lol jk but seriously if u have a ps3 we can get along and play games we both like (skyrim).
Lol, I've only upgraded my PC once. It's not too much of a hassle. And anyway, I'm just the kind of person who likes power and performance over convenience. Subjective opinion, I suppose, but oh well. Skyrim FTW!
I think after a while everything will go over internett when the speed is so fast its no point in having a high spec pc cuz your phone will have the powers of a super computer :)

(p2) that means that dev's are no longer restricted by 10 year old console graphic limitations or PC games were piracy is running rampant

Vakrian 5 months ago
Ran out of room on my nerd rage replay.
Onlive will have exclusives and the one that Steve Perlman stats will look like avatar when it comes out in 2012 and he states the best 2012gaming pc will not come close to have the power of running that game. That reminds me Onlive hardware is like comparing a Toyota mini van to a NASCAR in graphic power Ver a PC and yes onlive is the NASCAR.
dauransx 5 months ago
@TotalHalibut Your logic on this matter is is way off. I'll tell you who they are targeting MR totalfailbutt. I will not upgrade my pc for $200+ just to play a $60 pc game for a year and then more costly upgrades, i do not like console games anymore and i want to play PC games on my TV or tablet (never ever needs upgrades) and fyi if you buy a hard-copy of a new released game (deus ex3 is the first) and if its on onlive you will get the full play-pass code with it so you will have both.
dauransx 5 months ago
@TotalHalibut : people who are running Linux and don't want to pay for a Windows License might be interested by Onlive, provided they do support Linux...

An onlive-ish service on steam would've been nice. Simply Steam + the possibility to play from anywhere and on basically any machine, but maybe not as crispy.

Well, i think onlive is for the people with a cheap PC and who don't like to wait for downloads and updates.
arjanboogaart 5 months ago in playlist Video's van TotalHalibut
The only way I see this Onlive business model work is through rental services.
I don't think people will be willing to pay a full game price just to have access to it when certain conditions are met, such as having a high speed connection around. You don't own a license of the game and cannot download it on your PC.
It will be great for monthly renting, because it allows you to try all these games out before you buy them or play them until you acquire a good enough PC/Console that can handle them
AfterStarX 5 months ago
@AfterStarX Why would you not just buy them there if you don't have a good enough PC/console? That's actually what it's ment for.
I do however not like the fact that you don't see the games, you can't touch them, it's just a few bytes on their server saying you own it.

@arjanboogaart Please read again what I wrote. I said "...play them UNTIL you acquire a good enough PC/Console that can handle them."

Both have exploded.
downphoenix 5 months ago
That said its cool that you like some of the features. I see your point on why most wont need the service, and that is correct, but the same could be said of Steam when it first came out, noone needed steam, they could just buy discs for the game. Now practically everyone who games on PC uses steam and its smashing the pc retail market, because of the convenience due to no more store visits or shipments or discs. Onlive adds convenience because no installs or downloads or platform restrictions.
downphoenix 5 months ago

10 bucks a month is kinda eh but I have some fun and I'm not alone:)

onlive - as i listen to you talking about it, i wonder - couldnt it be the ultimate marketing platform? you program your game for whatever hardware you want, publish on onLive, people can try it out instantly without downloads or ANY traces on their computer, no installs or uninstalls... and if they like it, they buy it and download it whole... that's the way i could see it working, but then it would make more sense to monetise on "advertisers" and keep the user-end free

Jostedalsosten 5 months ago
@Jostedalsosten They can and do, most of the time. Just look at the graphics of Battlefield 3. And if you're talking an animated movie, that's even more realistic of an idea. Just look at a good family game, little big planet 2.
Games can still portray the character's thoughts, as well as look as good as a film, maybe a little less realistic, but more extravagant special effects (Because they don't have to be possible to do outside of games).
c0d3w0rd 5 months ago
@c0d3w0rd Sure, but you will have to agree that games such as Skyrim and BF3 can't match the visuals of a fantasy or war film. When I made the comment earlier I thought it was obvious that I excluded animated movies, as they are not about realism.
It's definitely a subject of debate, but in my opinion games and films have up until this point failed at doing so. That is not to say that you don't explore the characters in dept in these media, however they do so in a different manner.
Jostedalsosten 5 months ago
@c0d3w0rd Where a book conveys a persons thoughts more directly, a film or game might show this through facial expressions, subtle remarks and such. While this is a viable way of doing so, it still is a non-verbal form of communication, which, inevitably, means there's less detail. Books are superior in this regard, but films are superior in a different regard, just as games are superior in yet another area. Which is *the* best medium is a matter of taste.
Jostedalsosten 5 months ago
@Jostedalsosten Around 55% of all communication is body language. Don't quote me on the exact statistics, but that's something that games and movies have, given that they do it right.
hlsghost 5 months ago
@hlsghost Sure, I know about that, but body language isn't enough to see what a person is thinking. In a book you can get that conveyed exactly as it is thought, word for word. There's no room for misconceptions. If body language was sufficient we would all know exactly what everyone else thinks all the time, and it's pretty obvious that we don't.
