  • The version I has has a title page saying Tuby the Tubba

  • Lol. By the end of the song, Tubby is just um-pawing again.

  • 7:23 The start of the song. oh yeah.

  • Omg...I want to cry I absolutely LOVED THIS CARTOON when I was like 4!!! (speechless)

  • Tuba's aren't the only ones without much melody. When the bullfrog sings the song, it's a bass clarinet playing. Or sounds like one, at least

  • Thanks for this. I'd almost forgotten about it...

  • It's on a DVD compilation, "The Puppetoon Movie," though with truncated credits. Check Amazon.com.

  • Apparently this orchestra never plays Wagner.

  • Aaaah! This is amazing! I dance in a character group with my ballet school and it's to Tubby the Tuba! I'm the trumpet! We performed this on sunday at the first ever Dance Proms at the Royal Albert Hall! We also came second with it at All England Dance Finals this summer 2011!!!

  • I demand more stop-motion! and none of that Robot Chicken crap, i want the real deal!

  • I'm a Tuba player soon to be Tuba Major.

    I love this

  • Lovely to revisit this classic. I prefer Danny Kaye's narration, of course, but the visuals are nice. Every kid should see/hear it, together with the Young Person's Guide To The Orchestra.

  • This was wonderful! I showed my 1st grade music class as an introduction to the families of the orchestra. they were mesmerized with the puppetoons!!! I liked this version over all of the others on youtube! Thanks! If it comes out on DVD, I want one for my classroom!

  • Beautiful animation and story. You don't see decent art like this anymore. and the soundtrack was very nice also.

  • When the orchestra was laughing, I thought: christ that's evil!

  • What's the song that the orchestra plays in the first rehearsal? (the one that tubby doesn't stop playing after it ends?)

  • Im a tuba player and I just loved this simply amazing c: <3

  • This is a wonderful animated short symbolizing life in general. I'm just a tad surprised that the other bass members of the orchestra (e.g. the double basses or contrabassoon) did not feel more sympathy for Tubby. They did not get solos for much of orchestral history, either.

  • My mind just got blown. I had this on VHS and have been wondering for years exactly what it was. Thank you so much for that megaton nostalgia blast.

  • by any chance does anyone know if there's a spanish version of this or at least with subtitles...

  • the violins kick butt

  • the violins are just way better than the tuba!

  • Nice job.

  • Love this cartoon, brings me back to my childhood years :) lol

  • Sorry... Thank for brings back childhood.memories.. Is this on DVD?

  • @toressm Not officially. It's been put on several public domain DVDs as far as I have found.

  • THANK-YOU!!

  • @Uberwagen lol I elder have luvd to b woken up like that lmao

  • OMG I thought I was crazy cuz nobody knew Wat I was talking about. Thank u I've been looking for this for a long time.

  • This... I had this on VHS. Thank you so much

  • Thank you so much for sharing this cartoon! I loved it as a child and love it more so now!

  • You did a wonderful job. I remember seeing this as a child and just loved it. Thank you for putting it up to share with us!

  • This was the last of the George Pal's Puppetoons. But Pal's series definitely goes out with a bang here - this is one of the best Puppetoon productions!

  • You say 1947, BUT...you know the title page, saying "TUBBY THE TUBA", the small print says MCMXLVI.

    MCMXLVI=1000+100before1000+10before50+5+1

    =1000+900+40+5+1

    =1946.

    ...so HA!

  • @BeresfordProductions It WAS released in 1947, but it must've been copyrighted in 1946. There's always a matter of time between when a film is copyrighted and when it is actually released.

  • @BeresfordProductions how could i find a public domain dvd of this? i run a non profit for music for children and it would be wonderful to show them this film and then have our music students play the same instruments in person right there? any ideas?

  • Annoyingly when they're all playing the song at the end, Tubby still only plays Oom-Pah

  • tubby tuba thing scares me...

  • Man this is great I haven't seen this cartoon in years. Now if only I could find the rest of the cartoons that went with it.

  • typical French horn -_-

    tubas for life <3

also we can play "pretty little tunes" :)

  • One of George Pal's greatest animated shorts!! A true find! The first time I've seen this version (or a part of it) was on Shining Time Station on PBS

  • @bigg3469117 Yes. It was on episode 13 (Finders Keepers). I miss Shining Time Station.

  • VHS? I didn't even have color tv. I did have a vinyl 33 with Annette Funicello narrating this story. I closed my eyes and used my imagination to create the footage in my mind. This is pretty close to what I remember "seeing" though. THANKS!!!!

  • Would be eternally grateful if you could get me just the segment with the frog singing the Bargup Song. Thanks Jay

    Harleyjay@att.net

  • This is the best I haven't seen this in over 15 years, I never thought I'd see it again but thanks to you and YouTube I get to revisit an old childhood favorite, any time I want.

  • I say "gnnn, gnnn, gunn, gnnn, lovely evening, ggn, gnnn" to my g/f, and everytime she is like.."Oh, okay?"

  • You did an excellent job. I remember this from when i was little. Thanks for the memories.

  • this was my favorite part of the puppetoon movie. my mom got this for my 5th birthday. im 19 now and glad i still find this entertaining :)

  • Thank you thank you thank you!!!

  • Phenomenal job! I have been looking for this tune and cartoon for many years! This version is far better quality than the VHS I grew up with. Thank you for posting this old cartoon!

  • good job!

  • Do want.

  • brings back the memories of watching this on my vhs

  • I still have the 1990 VHS

  • this guy can seriously blow himself

  • @JimmyFatz LOL

  • Ok I saw the last part of this on shining time station years ago, did anyone else see it there

  • Tubby The Tuba, is one of the best Puppetoons ever made. Long before the days of Pixar and digital animation.

  • Fucking yes tubby!!

  • Surely the double bass and contrabassoon could complain of being similarly ignored. Few concertos or solos are given to them.

  • Amazing.. really great you posted this seems like a hard thing to find!

  • thank you for posting this!

  • I wonder if Paramount has the rights to this cartoon...

  • I first saw this back in 1962, brings back a lot of memories thank for posting.

  • Anyone remember this from shining time station?

  • NO WAY!!! I just took a time machine to when I was 4!!! Thank you so much for posting this!!

  • @dreamhigher--

You do realize, don't you, that George Pal, who created the Puppetoon and produced Tubby the Tuba, also produced the original movie version of The Time Machine (1960)?

Because if you weren't aware of that, your use of the phrase "time machine" is certainly a strange coincidence. :-)

  • Tubby was jamming! It just goes to show, tubas need love and respect, too.

  • I haven't seen this since 1987! I think I am going to cry!! Thank you so much for adding this, you made my day.

  • @keenansblue

I started crying when the bullfrog first sang his song to Tubby. This cartoon--er, Puppetoon--always chokes me up. Partly because of the emotional situation, but also because I find Tubby's (well, originally the bullfrog's) song so haunting. It really is a beautiful melody!

Thank you so much, superfunforeveryone, for all your painstaking efforts in assembling this. The result is certainly worthwhile! :-)

  • Tubby's song would be a good melody for a techno song!

  • Amo a Tubby la Tuba

  • Wow...Tubby just played the anthem to Nazi Germany. Paramount was known to be pro-German.

  • this takes me back 50 years thanks, along with sparkys magic panio.

  • Beautiful relic from my childhood. Thank you for this!!

  • similar to the story of rudolph..as kids...it taught us..that if youre different..you will be ridiculed..teased unmercifully..and exiled from the clique...unless you have something that everyone needs...then everyone will suddenly love you.... and you dont have to commit suicide after all...if you're physically unattractive..you'd better be extraordinary..

  • This is beautiful. :)

  • Thanks for this - I remember listening to Danny Kaye as a boy and beong captivated by the story and music - loved it, but I don't remember this cartoon.

  • Oh my gosh, I've seen this before! It must've been when I was really young, but I just vaguelly remember it. Thank you for uploading

  • All I have to say yes. Yes and thank you for bringing back childhood memories. "All I ever play is Ooom pop Ooom pop allll the time." Classic.

  • @TheIBeKay Likewise.

  • I remember seeing this on TV before VHS or cable was invented!

  • me too my mother had VHS too and it sounds like crap now because i played it so much lol thanx for posting

  • Has anybody seen the Puppetoon movie? It has this video and heaps more. It's awesome. I had a video, but it's stopped working :(

  • I'm a tuba and must learn to play this lol

  • This is so awesome... do you have the john henry one too??

  • love this video so much ahah

  • Tub tub tubbers!

  • I prefer Danny Kaye's audio-only version, I think...

  • Animation is so cool!

  • Thank you for taking the time to do all of this! It brings back lots of memories from my childhood and warms my hear to see someone taking interest in a normally obscure aspect of animation history.

  • Brings back childhood. I was born in the 80's, but my parents had a VHS of this, and I watched it repeatedly. Thank you for posting.

  • My dad bought me the vhs too when i was young i remember there was a merry melodie and a dancing dog cartoon as well!

  • @IndianaAndrea and Barrosse. I thought the same thing too.

  • @IndianaAndrea and Barrosse. I thought the same thing too.

Does any one know the names of the songs played?

  • @IndianaAndrea i used to watch it all the time as a kid to the tape i had showed this and lil audrey and casper i love being a 80's baby and 90's kid now i show it to my children

  • @IndianaAndrea Me, too!

  • Wow! The last time I saw this short I think was in 1954 or maybe later. It was fun seeing it again and enjoying the music.

  • Totally wicked. Haven't seen this in ten years!
