Dedicated to my aunt, Jane (1923-2011), a fantastic pianist (UC-Berkeley). Her sensitive piano interpretations from the Great American Songbook, the French Impressionists, and modern classics imparted a deep musical appreciation to her entire family. Thank you, Jane. R.I.P. Your Debussy's "Arabesque" is next...
I have always loved his music...BUT...at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester in 1959....the audience were enraptured....They asked for an encore..I was there..he just finished the set and walked out...and the audience felt insulted...by an American jazz icon................he was probably having a bad day...like we all do sometimes..
Im not sure about the rest of you, im a huge fan of Brubeck, but for me Paul Desmond is the greatest, not only did he actually write take 5 (yet Brubeck received the credit) but his talent far surpasses that of Brubeck's, he makes these songs what they are, his abilities on that sax are definitive of this genre.
I heard this piece on National Public Radio for the first time last night here in the Tampa area. Wow, great phrasing and soul. Classic Brubeck and Desmond. Thanks for sharing....Happy birthday Mr. Brubeck!.......JT
this is my absolute favorite type of jazz.... if they incorporated some vibes in there... ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh mannnnnn.... and I mean haunting vibes, not cheesy vibes.... if anybody knows any similar type ish like this with minimal hi hats, deep smokey bass, and anti cheesy melodies.... please share...
Dave was recognize like people make more wide the cultur from USA some days ago in White House. The prefered song is "My Favorite things" and he play like master jazz .
@cigarsmoker26 I met Brubeck for the first time when I was 16 years old. My mother chaperoned me. It was under a large tent and we could go backstage after the performance. Mom told him "I listened to his music 18 hours a day..." he said.."he didn't think he could listen to his own music that much each day.." I've seen him twice since then. He's now 90 years old and still touring.Go ino the Brubeck at the White House honorees. You will see his four sons playing and him beaming.
@cigarsmoker26 Yeah. I met him when I was 16. Then I saw him at The Blue Note. The last time I saw hm was at Gerry Mulligan's memorial service in 1996. He is the nicent most decent man you'd ever watn to meet. Married to his wife Iola for 60+ years. Get his albums Brubeck Time, Jazz Goes to College, and so on...
@sohooded Yes, Paul Desmond wrote this for Audrey Hepburn whom he'd never met but adored. Paul died from lung/throat cancer from smoking two packs a day..When I saw Brubeck at the Blue Note (his first club date in 25 years) before he began playing he asked that "out of respect for Paul everyone please stop smoking..."
@sohooded jazz is hard to find in my part of the world and HATE buying stuff off e-bay. but I like a challenge and to travle. sounds like fun to track them down
This is a great example of classic Brubeck & Desmond. They performed a similar piece for the Playboy jazz label back in the 50's (Pilgrim's Progress, i.e. Janet Pilgrim).
