Agree completely. I have both shimano & Sram: Shimano slx on my gt 29er and sram x7 on my sette fs xc. Although they are two different bikes, the sram x7 performs better and have less problems than the shimano.

looks to me like the shimano does a great job of absorbing the shock...while the sram looks like the spring is to tight..i wonder where all the energy is going on the sram???
A derailleur isn't the part if your bike you want "absorbing the shock." There ARE documented cases of derailleurs jumping from cog to cog from bumps, and this puts undue wear on cassettes. I'm unaware of any documented cases of a derailleur failing because it wasn't "asorbing" the forces directed on it over bumpy terrain. These things don't have enough mass or inertia to cause damage to their attachment points. Undue movement is more of a problem.
Sram XO and XX is the brand of choice for the mass majority of pro XC riders and I use the XO 2x10 drivetrain and its unbeatable for trail and XX is unbeatable for XC
the shimano doesn't look like it is adjusted right! I am using a cheap shimano I got for 12 bucks from kmart i have never had a problem shifting and i ride hard enough I snapped an axle not just the skewer/quick release but the axle!
Shimano new Shadow technology rear darauilers are better then this Shimano model (XTR 2003). I heave Deore XT 2008 (shadow) and Deore XT 2004, and Shadow model is 100x more reliable, more solid then previuos model. Now SRAM has better competition
Sram is one of the thing to thanks for coming to market. But that shimano model is olde. In that comparison no doubt SRAM but with newest? Who? In any case I ahve SRAM XX The Best!!!
the only product worth anything from Shimano might be the Shimano saint group; cos it does look awesome as hell, but if it weren't on your bike stock buy some SRAM components
also i know from experience that sram functions much better under higher stress like shifting when climbing. shimano makes much better chains/cranksets though. and i prefer sram shifting because it has a 1:1 actuation ratio vs. a 3:1 on shimano which means less throw on the shifterzz
@vette0009 derailleurs werent made for road bikes either. derailleurs were made for bikes. they didnt have mountain bikes when derailleurs were invented.
actually there's nothing wrong with that movement the deore does, it menas it is absorbing all impacts, trouble would be if it moves or vibrates sideways without shifting... Shimano works better for me
well....that explain why shimano come out "shadow" style derailleur. i really think my xtr shadow works way better than X0......much faster, lower profile, and looks cool w/ carbon cage!
So? The xtr cost less, works extremely well, even in rough, muddy conditions, where the xo, gives up.The sram triggers doesn`t work good when you are after a 80 km in muddy, wet, mountain conditions, with tired hands. Due to the profile which srams triggers have, your fingers will only slip off.
Been using Shimano for over 30 years. Thought it was OK until SRAM came along. IMHO SRAM's 1:1 system is far superior. Faster shifts and less fiddling with the adjustments. I'm in the process of switching all of my bikes to SRAM.
they fail to mention that the cable end in the X.0 shifter sits under this pain-in-the-ass coiled spring, making it frustrating to change. The limit screws thread into some low quality plastic piece, that can strip easily and ruin your 300 dollar der. A stable der makes shifting smoother, yes, but the forces of the bumps get absorbed by the shimano der's spring, where as they are simply absorbed into the hanger of the bike, the pivots on the der, and those shitty limit screws.
This video is dated already and shouldn't be use. Take note that in the vid it was a old XTR against the newly designed X.0. Look at now, most top end race bike comes with XTR again. So that should tell that Shimano MTB division have done their homework. Im not saying A or B is better or such but what I mean is that this video is outdated.
I have both an XTR and an X-9. I have put a lot of hard miles on both and can tell no difference. They both hit the gear I want quickly, no ghost shifting, and both can take a hit. X-9 has one pivot point, XTR has 2. I don't see the problem
All this proves is SRAM absorbs all the shocks. Which is technically bad. Shimano didn't drop a chain and absorbing impacts like that, SRAM'll break something sooner.
sram der was designed not to bounce. Shimano wasn't. Therefore this vid just shows exactly that. Doesn't mean Sram is better. Personally I prefer Sram a bit more but this vid is poor. Furthermore, something stiff and unmoving means more shock goes to the der and it will fail faster (poor durability). Case in point: A full rigid rider will feel more shock than a full sus rider.
A buddy of mine had a NEW freshly installed xtr derailler fail 4 miles into a sport race... it just expoloded, done, non-repairable.... our shop has NEVER seen a x9 or x0 failure of such epic proportions.
