I may be missing something simple. I can only go off the 10th planet stuff online. Like the submission101 videos have gotten me far. One problem with one guy I roll with is when I go for mission control. Right wrist to left ankle/leg. And before I can try and get his right arm to the mat, he pretty much pummels in with his left arm and sometimes goes to the can opener from there. And him doing that just breaks by right arm free from my ankle/leg breaking my mission control. Counter to this?
the awesome thing about jiu jitsu is the science to it, i didn't even realize tht it's about making ur opponent tap cuz u gotta understand the science and techinique to transition to tht move
Good video man, very informative... this clip shows why some passes don't work, but what ones DO work? Do you have, or do you plan to put out a clip that details how to pass the rubber guard the right way?
I was already a fan of the rubber guard system, but this video is so simple and so obvious it blew me away! I can't believe anyone would doubt this system.
Can someone tell me the counter to rubber guard when someone is pushing down on your foot that you have over their head? I think I've seen a video of Eddie showing how to counter the "pushing the foot down" move but I can't remember it.
Yea its pretty much true. I have seen a ton of "Anti rubber guard" videos and they are all bull crap...lol The best way of defending against the rubber guard is LEARNING THE RUBBER GUARD!
elbows 2 thighs will work if opponent has the pain threshold of the biggest pus$y in the world. R.guard is very good in Sport jj, not so good in mma, TERRIBLE IN s.DEFENSE . In mma & s.defense u can pic up a pinned opponent & slam them in the ground(old tech. that was used in judo). Also leaves ur face xposed 2 punches, elbows, & knees. The future of grappling in mma is going 2 be in transition from the standing clinch 2 ground 2 submission like in judo or wrestling. Being in guard is danger in
@str8bigr1 not to argue etc... and I know this is an old post.. but it doesn't sound like you know anything about rubber guard.. you aren't exposed to punches while using rubber guard.. they have no way they can punch you(thats why one position is called chill dog..).. and knees and kicks?!? thats not even possible in normal guard and illegal at least to the head if it was in some way possible.
@str8bigr1 also regarding slams.. it would be possible if you were crazy strong but the lever arm created by someone being so high up.. especially in things like crack head etc.. would make it incredibly difficult to lift them unless you're able to bring them in closer to your center of gravity... most slams happen with triangles etc.. and that's because of arm positions.. you're able to get them around behind them and support their weight. just my 2 cents
@Submissions101 will do. if you could also try it and tell me your responses, it'd be appreciated. all the guys that ive rolled with tell me its either a cheap or disallowed move.
@KYNCarena You must be seriously good at jiu jitsu if that has never failed for you. It's not that simple. I've had fully postured opponents try to break my guard with their elbows and fail. When your head is already down, it's hardly an option anyway.
Are there ANY videos out there on breaking the rubber guard? I mean, I know its a system but it's not a system I want to use or learn. I have serious knee problems, so I prefer playing a top game than to use any guard work. Any suggestions? From all I can gather there isn't much to do other than keep straight posture, but sometimes you get tired or whatever and sooner or later I'll end up in someone's guard or rubber guard..
So what i do is cross my legs over like an indian sitting position and use my legs to sit up. After that i kinda hold onto his legs and turn him over and get him into a boston crab or clover leaf
Yeah i train the rubber guard ( from the book) with my bjj partner. This probably has alotta flaws just throwin it out there:
when im broken down in to mission control i creep my legs over (staying low) and cross em (like an indian pose or yoga crossed leg thing or w.e) and i use my legs and pushup to posture up (its a type of triangle defense
Watching martial arts evolve should excite people, as long as there is someone doing something new, there will be people coming up with ways to best it
@ThRoWBaCkTeXaS Thats because rubber guard can be easily stacked and passed by someone who is stronger than you. great for no gi grappling very bad for mma...
An old vid but i'll add my 2p. I first seen this so called RB counter demo'd by a black belt bjj instructor and tbh dismissed it right away as it was fundamentally flawed fom the onset. How could i see this(white belt) yet a well known/respected BB bjj guy couldnt?
lol its funny how you said rubber gaurd in quotations lol,..btw thanks for posting the video you guys at 10th planet are awesome keep up the good work
PD Jiu-Jistu is not about strength, anyway. It is about patience, and strategy. Crackhead control will control you and when you are tired, the not tired rubber guard player (once you lift up the leg on your hip), you fall right into a triangle. nap (neck) or snap(arm). Rubber Guard knowledge is a science, if you understand it.
@SamuraixJack Yeah i know i go to a carlson gracie school and he almost kicked me out for using the rubber guard. im a green belt and i was tapping many black belts who didnt know what the fuck was going on when i broke them down i pretty much let them pick there poison i could catch them in triangles, gogoplatas, omoplatas, invisible collar chokes. but the gracies think it is disrespectful that he is trying to change bjj. i wish there was a 10th planet school in illinois
Why would he want to give Boring normal names, when the system isn't normal jiu jitsu........the names are wicked & a lot more easy to Remember........
Well said... They could have at least done mission control the right way. The more they try to stop the rubber guard, the more open they leave themselves for submissions.
I love the way our discipline is advancing...I love the BJJ old system and ill never leave it but i love the way how people like Eddie Bravo are creating new techniques. Its giving us a challenge to work on and making the competition better.
Im involved in martial arts competition and mixed martial arts compititon in texas, ive been doing BJJ for only 5years so i cant say im a true expert at it cause ive doing Muay Thai most of my life but like i said. Im loving the revolution of BJJ system :)
I believed "Smashing the Rubber Guard" meant ways how to break the technique. Im a big guy and routinely find myself on the Mount. I bet this is a common issue.
ya me 2. guess thats y there is a question mark. if we had only opened our eyes. i used the rubber guar in amateur mma & found it 2 b extremely effective when correctly applied. thnx 4 another great vid Sub 101
I believe his name is Ari? (the main instructor) but he's being SOO respectful of people who are bashing the "technique" he uses. What a great teacher/person! 5 stars.
tanswell may not have the best rubber guard but he's no joke:
"Karl Tanswell is the UK regional director for Straight Blast Gym international. He is one of the few who has met the high standards for being a SBG full-instructor/coach and is the only one of that kind in Europe!"
that was taken from the straight blast website.
not trying to be argumentative but he is very credible in the martial arts world, albeit not his rubber guard
He's great...no issue with HIM at all...just something we thought we'd like to touch upon. It was never designed to bash the man or his gym but point out some gaps as we say them. We are just one voice in a choir...feel free to listen and learn from who you wish...its all good
i was replying to someone else, my post got pushed up here for some reason :-/
the Submissions 101 guys in general have been very respectful in their comments, i was just replying to a poster who seemed to be saying that Karl had never studied BJJ and didn't know much about it.
why not just picking his ass up and slamming the fuck out of him. when he has you in a rubber guard one of his legs that are suppose to control your hips up. lean on him pick the open leg up keep leaning on him pick up the other leg then lift him up and slam his ass. it takes alot of STRENGTH.
because your postures broken (your head is down) and because they use their legs to hold you down and the other is on the hip which enables them to have a better degree of control in a no-gi situation.
AND
as with any jiu-jitsu practitioner they aren't just going to let you pick them up.
and besides
slamming someone just screams poser unless you got like at least a purple belt.
Ahh submissions 101, you guys are so awesome! Vids are posted so often and you guys are ready to rise up to any challenges to your methods and techniques. Awesome stuff!
Why don't you order the books & Instructional DVD's for now, Purchase the Mastering the Rubber Guard Book & DVD, Mastering the Twister Book & Fade to Black, Mastering the Twister DVD will hopefully be out sometime this summer & you will have the whole system at your dispose until a school opens up around you or until you travel to a different school
Now I don't practice the 10 planet system because there is no school near me, but I do have Eddie's "Mastering The Rubber Guard" and in his book there is a sweep called "The Stack Attack". I'd say check that out and see if that might work for you.
rubber guard I think is really for submissions grappling
BTW, in the street, if U can, try and stay on your feet, even though a normal closed guard can be somewhat useful in self defense if the agressor brings you down
the strategy for the rubber guard is based on MMA scenarios like ground and pound and all that, so it can defend as well as any other guard could with those rules in mind, but no, it's not "for self-defense" technically.
I have a question bout the rubberguard... say if the guy is a powerhouse, when hes using all his strenght to posture wouldnt it put some bad tension on your knees trying to hold him down? How would you avoid putting to much tension on your knees when someones is trying to posture up.
Im 150lbs, guy im talking about was 190, and is just overly strong for his size, when he started posturing my knees felt alot of tension.
I used to feel a lot of tension on my knees when I kicked my hardest and it missed, but after a while they got stronger and they don't hurt at all now.
Im not sure about individual sessions but at 10th Planet Toronto its $100 Canadian a month. Obviously theres a whole bunch of lessions + open mat time.
rolled with a guy with a gracie jj background the other day and made him tap using omoplata via rubber guard, didn't really know how it was going to work out for me but just wanted to say that the rubber guard is SICK!!!! when done correctly...
okay... this by far is my favorite go to guard!!! but i am having problems with it. sometimes when I have them on mission control, zombie, and new york ...my opponent tends to pick me up and slams me to break it.. is there anyway i can prevent him from being able to slam me?? a sweep maybe??? I kept thinking THE ASYLUM but what else can i do??? i've gotten so close from pulling a gogoplata or straight jacket on him, its just he knows what to expect so he immediately try to break out of the guard
1. use you hip leg to push your partner away when he tries to slam you.
2. if he's stacking you really hard, walk on your shoulders backwards before he completely takes away your leverage.remember no guard system is stack-proof.
5. try the carni when he stacks. i've gotten a couple of those. i've even let the guy pass my hip leg, then clear the neck (while he's standing up) and force him back down and submitted him.
6. sweeps: half-butterfly sweep, pendulum sweep, foot sweep. these might require you to actually give up the rubber guard and play a more traditional open guard.
7. if the full guard if just not working, transition to butterfly guard or even half guard.
I like that you guys are not dogmatic in your approach in response to these videos(or in general). Dogma is something that has plagued martial arts for a long time.
Progression > "tradition". While basics are still rooted in tradition, many martial arts/artists are unwilling to accept new things. I see this as a serious problem throughout the martial arts world. As always, thanks for the video.
well said. No person who does 10p will say it is the end all be all...just be open minded and make your jits your own. Add stuff to it. jiu Jitsu is like LEGO, keep building until you have something. Tear it down when you want to. You don't have to follow the plans all the time. There is variety...that is what makes it special.
i just got eddies new book and i think its great. personally the rubber guard is difficult for me to hold since i have short stocky legs but im very flexible. but his half guard game is amazing
sub101 didnt even listen 2the correct technique from the video themselfs cos they didnt even follow the correct posture or postion with there hands! How can they say the british guy, performing rubber guard is doing it wrong, when they performed coat hanger wrong! guys the video was done on the spur of the moment cos he had a camcorder available & just got someone to roughtly perform rubber guard! it was just to show you the defence not bloody mission control etc.thats what the books for!!
Agreed. The point was not to remark the coat hanger but to show that in order for that move to work, one should start with the correct posture and mission control. The move becomes moot if you aren't doing what the move is claimed to do-which was smash the rubber guard. The coat hanger prob works great against a guard as shown in their video. Again, not taking away from the teacher but just wanted to point out that doing the video with a proper RG would help. I am all about learning technique;-)
ye cool but like i said the dude just done it on the spur of the moment, just to get it out there.makes no difference to coathanger which way round u hold ankle.
u need ur hand on ya forarm with ur other hand as a knife edge in the throat, not on the shoulder!!
im a fan of rubber guard and used it alot in comp with sucess till i damaged my knee, but the coat hanger really is good if u play it correct!great defence!
like i said karl the coach in vid rolled with eddie an so have i & defended it
I want 2 be on your side of the pond ..I know ya gotta b alittle curious how well I'm doin w/your system...been studying online for months w/submission master dummy..also bought mastering the rubber gaurd. I feel like a long distant family member tryin 2 find my wings to cross over 2 your side of the pond!!
ALSO IF PUNCHING/ELBOW STRIKES/TO FACE(from miss cntrol) TRANSITIONS WERE THROWN IN THE MIX ALSO maybe WITH BLUFFING A SWEEP TO CREATE ENERGY TO OFFBALANCE HIM HE THEN MIGHT PUT HANDS 2 MAT?TRUE????I want2 join your school ASAP-do you guys have a carpool setup from san fernando valley(car problems)????hit me up on my e-mail I sent it on other reply..thanx
Kenny I think that you and the british guy could agree that all submissions in randori or shiai is spur of the moment. You have to take what uke gives you and what I think that Submissions101 is tryin to get across is to practice perfect technique always so that you are playing how you practice even if it is spur of the moment your doing it properly.
i dont like how 10th planet acts like there a whole diffrent sect of bjj jiu-jitsu. jiu-jitsu for mma? jiu-jitsu was dominating mma way before the rubber guard and i have not seen it used to succesful i always root for it when somebody uses it i like to see it used but the best bjj fighers in mma are traditional bjj guys minataro, jacara, damian maia, my friend miguel torres all gi fighters i am from calrson gracie chicago carlson was mma and bjj but he was open minded so do your thing
hey bro I have alot of respect 4 the gracies I study them as well but through what I've seen the way 10th planet breaks down every minor movement, and then they give it an unforgettable name to go with it..It makes the move almost photographic.I give them props 4 that..If I'm not mistaken it was joe rogan that mentioned the different sect (and I believe he said it was ALMOST A DIFF SECT).MAYBE I'm wrong I'm still learning as well!!
How about it you've got them broken down, and instead of doing a home alone, they've got their hands in the center in a tight gable grip, and from their attempting to push away and posture?
You can't always get the hand to the mat but there are armbar options (the croc) when they do what you suggested. All of these are covered in Eddie's books.
Don't be mad. It was in this particular instance that I felt the move wouldn't work if the RG was done correctly. I am sure the instructor who did it is a good fellow and I hear he is a BB in BJJ. We all learn from one another and that is the point.
Appreciate that you are sticking up for your coach and gym (I was never slagging either). You're right too, not everything will work for all people all the time. I am also pointing out that the rubber guard wasn't set up right in the video. I've heard GOOD things about your coach and your gym. Its just out take on things-that's all.
Like everything in BJJ its not the be all and end all but definatley has its time and place. it was just a quick video of the "coat hanger"
be aware of the armbar but aslong as you keep that in mind its not really a threat. certainly not from that gogoplatta armbar without the hip rotation i find its very lose and can pull your arm out, even with hip rotation it feels like you are 1 move ahead
It would be interesting to see how you guys open/defend rubber guard?
That is a very good point. It was just a quick video of the coat hanger but I just saw some things that didn't add up in the application of a proper RG. That is not to say that a coat hanger type of move wouldn't work or other variations on how to defend the RG.
At the end of the day-one video might lead someone else to build upon an idea and then come up with something truly remarkable.
First,There are atleast 2 different types of rubber-guard.1)grabing the ankle w/o controling the arm and 2)controling the arm.The first is more of brazillian type, the 2nd is eddie bravo's.I myself use boyh depending on the skill level of my opponent. We all learn from others, maybe you just didn't see that type.:)
i would like to say that is the best rubber guard breakdown i have ever seen i will use it and i feel as if my gjj skills will be much better the opportunities that are open in this form of breakdown are great what i look foward to learnign someday is some modifications or variations on anaconda and d'arce chokes but great job and btw i dont give what people say its gjj not bjj, gracie not brazilian pay respects to the greatest practitioners please
BTW, I've been amused by the names used for the little steps (zombie, new york) within a technique, but I couldn't help but laugh when you said home alone, that's classic.
nobody spends any time developing a defense against a weapon that doesnt work. the proliferation of materials out there on how to beat the rubber guard and why it doesnt work is what brought it to my attention in the first place. all of the tried and tested methods were once revoutionary so why cant we open our eyes and evolve? because it is easier to practice that which one is good at? its because we are afraid to look stupid that we do stupid things,
Would the Gracies be able to offer expert analysis of "breaking the rubber guard"? Also, is the "Rubber Guard" the end all-be all or does it come down to the person performing said system(s)? i.e. Gracie bjj, 10th planet jj, zen bujutsu etc...
No system is the end all be all, 10th planet included. It is just a system that works well for us and has advantages (in our opinion) over others. Do what makes you happy and have an open mind...that's our philosophy after all.
LOL. That is great. Do those guys also have a magic counter that completely defeats the xguard too? Or maybe they have one simple guard pass that works for any guard! woo hoo jiu jitsu isn't technical, all you need is a magic move!
One more thing. I really don't expect the larger >190 guys to use the rubber guard that much because of the flexibility requirements.(So they will be against it)Lastly it is hard to get a really big person in rubber guard no matter what your flexiblity is. All in all Eddy is showing alot of techniques that are not new but he does show them in a system and I think he is definitely worth listening to. Just continue to improve it and the system will grow as your pundits decrease.
The Gracie's had a hard time changing the traditional Jiu Jitsu and Eddie Bravo will have at least the same amount of trouble.I like the rubber guard because it has a system and not just random bunch of moves.Brazilian JJ has combinations that are good. I also like no gi approach and I think it is more relevant in a real fight.
The first thing I thought of when I saw this was Josh Barnett's "Attacking the Guard" video when he bashes BJJ in general. I think your point stands more valid, you have to know it, to get past it.
When is a 10th planet guy going to go into mma? I want to see all these semi new age moves in a real fight. I think they work great in pure jiu jitsu but how does it fair in mma? By mma I mean a real stage like UFC.
Watch some World Extreme Cagefighting, the have more of the up and coming fighters, and you'll see a lot of rubber guard used very effectively in an MMA situation. The guys utilizing it usually take a lot less damage from the guard ground and pound, because they can keep the guy on top defending.
kenprimo needs to stop posting his shitty vids about stopping the rubber gaurd lol

Eddie Bravo comes up with the gayest names for moves. Why can't he just call them something normal?
kloud51 2 years ago
Why would he want to give Boring normal names, when the system isn't normal jiu jitsu........the names are wicked & a lot more easy to Remember........

Im involved in martial arts competition and mixed martial arts compititon in texas, ive been doing BJJ for only 5years so i cant say im a true expert at it cause ive doing Muay Thai most of my life but like i said. Im loving the revolution of BJJ system :)

tanswell may not have the best rubber guard but he's no joke:
"Karl Tanswell is the UK regional director for Straight Blast Gym international. He is one of the few who has met the high standards for being a SBG full-instructor/coach and is the only one of that kind in Europe!"
that was taken from the straight blast website.
not trying to be argumentative but he is very credible in the martial arts world, albeit not his rubber guard

He's great...no issue with HIM at all...just something we thought we'd like to touch upon. It was never designed to bash the man or his gym but point out some gaps as we say them. We are just one voice in a choir...feel free to listen and learn from who you wish...its all good

the Submissions 101 guys in general have been very respectful in their comments, i was just replying to a poster who seemed to be saying that Karl had never studied BJJ and didn't know much about it.
keep up the great work
memento18poker 2 years ago
why not just picking his ass up and slamming the fuck out of him. when he has you in a rubber guard one of his legs that are suppose to control your hips up. lean on him pick the open leg up keep leaning on him pick up the other leg then lift him up and slam his ass. it takes alot of STRENGTH.
PrinceDimeXI 2 years ago
thats what crackhead controle is for. xD
ofaceplanto 2 years ago
because your postures broken (your head is down) and because they use their legs to hold you down and the other is on the hip which enables them to have a better degree of control in a no-gi situation.
AND
as with any jiu-jitsu practitioner they aren't just going to let you pick them up.
and besides
slamming someone just screams poser unless you got like at least a purple belt.

I have a question, Is the rubber guard just for sparring, Or is it actully for self defense?
kylekrb1 2 years ago
rubber guard I think is really for submissions grappling
BTW, in the street, if U can, try and stay on your feet, even though a normal closed guard can be somewhat useful in self defense if the agressor brings you down
peltiersupporter 2 years ago
the strategy for the rubber guard is based on MMA scenarios like ground and pound and all that, so it can defend as well as any other guard could with those rules in mind, but no, it's not "for self-defense" technically.

Moskau0320 3 years ago
I used to feel a lot of tension on my knees when I kicked my hardest and it missed, but after a while they got stronger and they don't hurt at all now.

craziii123 3 years ago 2
okay... this by far is my favorite go to guard!!! but i am having problems with it. sometimes when I have them on mission control, zombie, and new york ...my opponent tends to pick me up and slams me to break it.. is there anyway i can prevent him from being able to slam me?? a sweep maybe??? I kept thinking THE ASYLUM but what else can i do??? i've gotten so close from pulling a gogoplata or straight jacket on him, its just he knows what to expect so he immediately try to break out of the guard
fighter1125 3 years ago
1. use you hip leg to push your partner away when he tries to slam you.
2. if he's stacking you really hard, walk on your shoulders backwards before he completely takes away your leverage.remember no guard system is stack-proof.
3. arch your back to keep him from stacking.
4. keep everything tight. very important.
reverseinfinity 3 years ago
5. try the carni when he stacks. i've gotten a couple of those. i've even let the guy pass my hip leg, then clear the neck (while he's standing up) and force him back down and submitted him.
6. sweeps: half-butterfly sweep, pendulum sweep, foot sweep. these might require you to actually give up the rubber guard and play a more traditional open guard.
7. if the full guard if just not working, transition to butterfly guard or even half guard.
hope my bit helped
reverseinfinity 3 years ago
I like that you guys are not dogmatic in your approach in response to these videos(or in general). Dogma is something that has plagued martial arts for a long time.
Progression > "tradition". While basics are still rooted in tradition, many martial arts/artists are unwilling to accept new things. I see this as a serious problem throughout the martial arts world. As always, thanks for the video.

rubber guard isnt a 100 percent guard.
its just another guard, theirs no need to be close minded. learn it even if its not your go to.
kingshahine 3 years ago 4
well said. No person who does 10p will say it is the end all be all...just be open minded and make your jits your own. Add stuff to it. jiu Jitsu is like LEGO, keep building until you have something. Tear it down when you want to. You don't have to follow the plans all the time. There is variety...that is what makes it special.

ye i do and it is! not the point bro
kennybaker123 3 years ago
sub101 didnt even listen 2the correct technique from the video themselfs cos they didnt even follow the correct posture or postion with there hands! How can they say the british guy, performing rubber guard is doing it wrong, when they performed coat hanger wrong! guys the video was done on the spur of the moment cos he had a camcorder available & just got someone to roughtly perform rubber guard! it was just to show you the defence not bloody mission control etc.thats what the books for!!
kennybaker123 3 years ago
Submissions101 3 years ago
ye cool but like i said the dude just done it on the spur of the moment, just to get it out there.makes no difference to coathanger which way round u hold ankle.
u need ur hand on ya forarm with ur other hand as a knife edge in the throat, not on the shoulder!!
im a fan of rubber guard and used it alot in comp with sucess till i damaged my knee, but the coat hanger really is good if u play it correct!great defence!
like i said karl the coach in vid rolled with eddie an so have i & defended it

DREAMERPAUL1 3 years ago
Kenny I think that you and the british guy could agree that all submissions in randori or shiai is spur of the moment. You have to take what uke gives you and what I think that Submissions101 is tryin to get across is to practice perfect technique always so that you are playing how you practice even if it is spur of the moment your doing it properly.

i dont like how 10th planet acts like there a whole diffrent sect of bjj jiu-jitsu. jiu-jitsu for mma? jiu-jitsu was dominating mma way before the rubber guard and i have not seen it used to succesful i always root for it when somebody uses it i like to see it used but the best bjj fighers in mma are traditional bjj guys minataro, jacara, damian maia, my friend miguel torres all gi fighters i am from calrson gracie chicago carlson was mma and bjj but he was open minded so do your thing
bjjma 3 years ago
Not a different sect...just a different approach...do your own thing...love it all!
Submissions101 3 years ago
hey bro I have alot of respect 4 the gracies I study them as well but through what I've seen the way 10th planet breaks down every minor movement, and then they give it an unforgettable name to go with it..It makes the move almost photographic.I give them props 4 that..If I'm not mistaken it was joe rogan that mentioned the different sect (and I believe he said it was ALMOST A DIFF SECT).MAYBE I'm wrong I'm still learning as well!!
DREAMERPAUL1 3 years ago
How about it you've got them broken down, and instead of doing a home alone, they've got their hands in the center in a tight gable grip, and from their attempting to push away and posture?
Arty0569 3 years ago
You can't always get the hand to the mat but there are armbar options (the croc) when they do what you suggested. All of these are covered in Eddie's books.
Submissions101 3 years ago

sk8erj3flip 3 years ago
Don't be mad. It was in this particular instance that I felt the move wouldn't work if the RG was done correctly. I am sure the instructor who did it is a good fellow and I hear he is a BB in BJJ. We all learn from one another and that is the point.

Appreciate that you are sticking up for your coach and gym (I was never slagging either). You're right too, not everything will work for all people all the time. tusenbiter 3 years ago
Ordem e Progresso
Griffoo90 3 years ago
That is a very good point. It was just a quick video of the coat hanger but I just saw some things that didn't add up in the application of a proper RG. That is not to say that a coat hanger type of move wouldn't work or other variations on how to defend the RG.
At the end of the day-one video might lead someone else to build upon an idea and then come up with something truly remarkable.
Submissions101 3 years ago
That was the best breakdown of a rubber guard I've ever seen. Great job guys.

lere2001 3 years ago
First,There are atleast 2 different types of rubber-guard.1)grabing the ankle w/o controling the arm and 2)controling the arm.The first is more of brazillian type, the 2nd is eddie bravo's.I myself use boyh depending on the skill level of my opponent. We all learn from others, maybe you just didn't see that type.:)

nobody spends any time developing a defense against a weapon that doesnt work. the proliferation of materials out there on how to beat the rubber guard and why it doesnt work is what brought it to my attention in the first place. all of the tried and tested methods were once revoutionary so why cant we open our eyes and evolve? because it is easier to practice that which one is good at? its because we are afraid to look stupid that we do stupid things,

whaledub 3 years ago
Hello 10th Planet,
Would the Gracies be able to offer expert analysis of "breaking the rubber guard"? Also, is the "Rubber Guard" the end all-be all or does it come down to the person performing said system(s)? i.e. Gracie bjj, 10th planet jj, zen bujutsu etc...
Many thanks for your time!
Peace!
KCMO2NDTWIN 3 years ago
No system is the end all be all, 10th planet included. It is just a system that works well for us and has advantages (in our opinion) over others. Do what makes you happy and have an open mind...that's our philosophy after all.
Submissions101 3 years ago
No, the Rubber Guard is not the be all end all, it's a great tool to put in your arsenal. Eddie Bravo has said this himself.

LOL. That is great. Do those guys also have a magic counter that completely defeats the xguard too? Or maybe they have one simple guard pass that works for any guard! woo hoo jiu jitsu isn't technical, all you need is a magic move!
ilikebluejeans89 3 years ago
One more thing. I really don't expect the larger >190 guys to use the rubber guard that much because of the flexibility requirements.(So they will be against it)Lastly it is hard to get a really big person in rubber guard no matter what your flexiblity is. All in all Eddy is showing alot of techniques that are not new but he does show them in a system and I think he is definitely worth listening to. Just continue to improve it and the system will grow as your pundits decrease.
matrix1951 3 years ago
The Gracie's had a hard time changing the traditional Jiu Jitsu and Eddie Bravo will have at least the same amount of trouble.I like the rubber guard because it has a system and not just random bunch of moves.Brazilian JJ has combinations that are good. I also like no gi approach and I think it is more relevant in a real fight.
matrix1951 3 years ago
yes yes yes.. let them now how you roll. LOL.. I ran into a vid on the tube and noticed the same thing. No head arm control and funky Zombie.
Hector2028 3 years ago
The first thing I thought of when I saw this was Josh Barnett's "Attacking the Guard" video when he bashes BJJ in general. I think your point stands more valid, you have to know it, to get past it.

When is a 10th planet guy going to go into mma? I want to see all these semi new age moves in a real fight. I think they work great in pure jiu jitsu but how does it fair in mma? By mma I mean a real stage like UFC.
sdawson222 3 years ago
are you blind?
Watch some World Extreme Cagefighting, the have more of the up and coming fighters, and you'll see a lot of rubber guard used very effectively in an MMA situation. The guys utilizing it usually take a lot less damage from the guard ground and pound, because they can keep the guy on top defending.
