This is an 80's cult classic--I first saw this on USA's Night Flight way back. Another good movie around this time was Breaking Glass. A few years after the Stains movie, Diane Lane was in Streets of Fire, which was somewhat more commercially successful. These days seem like a million years ago now.
@TbagFM Um there was other all girl punk bands in 1970s not just the Runways. There was the Slits (Which I think would have been more of an inspiration for this movie than the Runaways if it was inspired by a punk band), X-Ray Specs (not sure if I spelled that correctly) and many more. The Stains do not look or even sound like the Runaways they are just compared because they are women in a band. It is also sad that no one knew about a great band like the Runaways until the fucking movie.
@bruiseviolet05 And there's also other girl bands, that were the pioners, in the case of the Beat sub-genre and in all Rock history of Girl bands for example The Liverbirds and MAYBE there were Rock'N'Roll bands with just girls in the 50's.
@modquadrophenia1964 I had never heard of the Livebirds I will have to check them out. It just frustrates me that everybody assumes that the Runaways were the first all girl band. Goes to show that people don't really take the time to look up women in rock. GirlSchool was another all girl band from the seventies...I think they might have pioneered the all girl metal band.
@bruiseviolet05 Uh huh, GirlSchool in N.W.O.B.H.M. and in punk there were also The Slits, and in the Beat sub-genre there were The Liverbirds: look for the song Peanut butter, or Too much monkey businness that was a cover, here on YouTube. There were other female bands in the 60's that played Garage-Rock but I don't know the names. You can search for "60's female garage rock bands" here on YouTube and you will find them. Cheers from México!!!!
I watched this movie today. It was very enjoyable to watch During the concert you see in the movie trailer was shot at coquitlam centre near Vancouver, BC. You can see the exteriors and the original interiors. That mall was built in 1979 and the movie was shot in 1981. it was interesting to see the Woodward's sign on the exterior of the mall. The mall looks very different now but the trademark ceiling is still very recognizable.
I just saw this movie like an hour ago and it's like whoa shit!! Nvr heard of it but it the greastest fucking movie ever!! Tomarrow Ima get that same hair do third degree burns has by my cuz who's a hairstylist!! Fuck best movie ever no doubt wonder y it doesn't have a shit load of attention like sixteen fucking candles?? It better then that fake shit (sorry!)
this movie deserves more credit & more viewers. back dropped by rock & rolls evilution and a D.I.Y. attitude this film is a blueprint to the dependent & the non, the abused becomes abuser, consumed & consumer, how your viewed by others changes you. the military & the media manipulation machines.
buying and selling your soul as you try to be an individual and run with the pack @ the same time. can you be yourself under the influence of the people your trying to impress and down right like?
It wasn't that bad, if you like those 80s band epics. I don't see why everyone thinks it's so terrible. I utterly enjoyed it, and Diane Lane was cute as hell, and had some really kickass hair.
wow cool, i remember this movie when it came out. ok, how/where do i get it on dvd. pls let me know, and yes it needs to be as clean as the original ^^ thanx
I guess it depends on what you mean by "crappy". Here's the thing, this film stands out as a precursor to all the media outlets trying to make a buck; a lot of posers. This film was made before MTV ever really became popular (1981) MTV only became a huge phenomenon, I think it's a great film to show as a marker in pop culture. It's a lot more significant now with all the wannabe punk bands, and pop princesses out there.
Ohh, ohh, hoo!! Way to go you prison bound creep! Maybe someday soon somebody will get a chance to jerk off into YOUR under garments while you cry into your pillow, praying for parole! "We don't put out!" You will or you'll get your sorry ass beat down real good by a bunch of fellas who could care less about your illustrious "movie career". Ya simp!
My mother has been going on about this movie for YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS, always griping about how she couldn't find it on VHS or DVD anywhere. Finally, I got it for her for Christmas last year, and I got to see what she was going on about. I think it's really good! If it were made today, people would be all over it (provided that they had the same stellar casting). I can't understand why this film slunk into obscurity...
Yeah, 16 y.o. Diane Lane, 15 y.o. Laura Dern... plus members from the Clash, Sex Pistols, The Tubes... directed by Lou Adler! I forgot how many times I watched this movie back in the 80s (on cable). Then it disappeared for almost two decades due to licensing issues. Just released on DVD, I finally got to see it again the other day. I amazed myself at the fact that I knew all the dialogue. A must see for PUNK/INDIE music (and indie film) fans.
I love it too! I am a new fan! I am 38 yrs old and I am quite ashamed to say I never knew this film existed until a couple of months ago. I'm going to buy the DVD. I LOVE IT!!!! :-)

I'm sorry, but I think Diane Lane had the ugliest fucking hair in this movie. Besides that superficial shit the movie is actually pretty good.

This story may have been based on the Runaways, but the it's way better than the Runaways movie.

@TbagFM They are way cooler than the Runaways. The Runaways look was based on guys - these chicks are all girls.

Where did Rhino dig up this vintage piece of crapola? Not even the cute (but utterly untalented) Diane Lane is enough to make it worth watching.

They did but most retailers weren't interested in carrying it. You can probably still find copies through online sellers, or a good used DVD store.
