  • Impressive!

  • @TonyXXD420

    Thanks Tony , Mike

  • What is the width of the board itself on your layout? its AMAZING!!!

  • Thanks , It was average of about 3' but this layout is now gone and the new one is about 50% done.

    Thanks , Mike

  • what are the numbers of the 2 GP30s in the video? if one is 1201 i have the exact same one look through my video's i use 1201 a lot

  • Yes it is 1201.

    Nice locomotives.

    Mike

  • Question, please? Where/who makes modern era vehicles for N scale? My issue is more for cars than trucks. Love the updates.

  • Atlas makes a few and some by GHQ and on Ebay you may find some Euro and Japan types.

    Thanks , Mike

  • the background painting of the mountains look so real and gives the layout depth

  • Thanks , It is a background CD on repeat.

    Thanks , Mike

  • Nice bit of switching - my dad would have loved it. What was the switcher used?

  • Thanks , The switcher is a Kato NW2.

    Mike

  • What system do you use to make bird sounds?

  • I have a southwestern backgound CD on continuous run while the layout is on.

    Thanks , Mike

  • Very cool.

  • How large is the entire layout, Mr. Fifer?

  • Thanks , It is 8' X 19.5'.

    Mike

  • Thanks.

  • Your welcome and glad you stopped in.

    Mike

  • @mrfifer how do you get such a large layout? i cant even get a 4x8 over here. My basement its stuffed with boxes and useless crap.

  • Mike, what kind of pet bird do you have?? I can hear him(her) in the background. kind of makes the layout sound like it's outside!! ( :

  • No pet bird , It is a background CD of the desert.

    Thanks , Mike

  • I still think that's a neat sound effect as it added ambiance to your layout

  • hey i need to know, are the trains pwered from the track?

  • Yes Sir. There is a constant voltage to the track with digital command control and the chip in each locomotive tells it how fast to go among other things (like lights, sound etc.)

    Thanks , Mike

  • hey uhhh do you have to keep cleaning the track? becouse i see other models and some of the tracks have rust, is that an effect or is it actual rust that needs to be cleaned.

  • No , it is painted rust to weather the rail and the rail tops are cleaned to allow for conductivity.

    Thanks , mike

  • Hi,

Nice layout. What is the funtion of a caboose? It seems to be a populair car with scale railroaders. Are they still in use today?

    Leo

  • Thanks Leo , The caboose housed the crew and was used to observe the trains consist as the train moved. They usually were looking for HOT BOXES , meaning greased wheel bushings that had gone dry of lube and would generally start to smoke and eventualy seize and derail the train. The crew would also do paper work and often rotate sleep there.

They are popular because in early railroading EVERY train had one and they are just plain COOL!

    Thanks , Mike

  • Mr Fifer do you have a remotor kit for an old con-cor berkshire? We seen one in walthers catolog.

  • my dad used to model too when he was a kid
