  • She,s GRATE TRULLY HOLY. R.I.P Mehalia.!!!!

  • Anyone know who's playing guitar on this?

  • she GRATE.!! GO MAHALIA.!!!!!!!

  • this woman had a great gospel voice.i love her gospel music.good one here.

  • This was recorded in 1945. She rivals Ella Fitzgerald with her SOUL voice, and her deep cpntralto tones.

Definitely, this is definitely one of Majalia's finest.

This has been one of my favorite songs for over 30 years.

Certainly, God has blessed this woman's vocal cords.

  • Perfect, just perfect

  • she,s one women who can sing she one of my faves.

  • For me this is Mahalia's finest!

  • dis shit right here go hard nigga

  • "Move On Up A Little Higher" was Mahalia Jackosn's only hit record -- or at least the version she released as 78 RPM single Apollo 164. (Mahalia re-recorded the song many times for other labels.) The Apollo version spent two weeks on the pop charts starting January 24, 1948 and peaked at #21. Despite not reaching to Top 20 and hving such a short chart run, her Apollo single continued to sell for many years -- eventually topping one million copies sold. Mahalia died at age 60 in 1972.

  • Voice of an angel. Love Mahalia.

  • Amen this song played on Pandora then I had to get a double dose me I was dancing in my linen ephod.

  • They don't make voices like hers anymore! Queen of Gospel.

    Rest Peacefully

    MAHALIA JACKSON (1911~1972)

  • I DO hope there's a hereafter where one's actions good and bad are totaled up and one is rewarded or exiled, but I have my doubts. In the meantime we should ALL try to make the world a better, fairer place for all living things present and of the future, JUST IN CASE. THANX!

  • Ze blijft super

  • Wow! Still POWERFUL!

  • Love this song

  • Why is the sound disabled?

    Come on now FIX UP

  • discovered her through my class....want a cd!!

  • On this anniversary of the day we buried our mother, Mrs. G. Linn, I thank God for his faithfulness and the love he is pouring out over our family. He is turning our eyes back to him. We are focused and determined to give him our all. I rebuke anything or anyone that would attack my family. Satan cannot have any of my relatives.

  • Her range is impecable!!!

  • Louisiana I love it! Bienvenue en Louisiane!

  • i love her voice (im atheist and dnt care about the themes, she has an awesome set of lungs)

  • @GoddessLennox I honestly feel bad for all non-believers. You have NOTHING to look forward to.

  • @Jantv81 Well, actually I believe in reincarnation, which separates me from most atheists. I just don't believe in a god. I'm sure I speak for all atheists when I say I actually feel bad for all believers, since they live their lives partially, since they abstain from all sorts of things from fear of punishment by something not even proven to exist. I live my life to the fullest thanks to my beliefs. I'm not dissing anyone out there now, so let's just enjoy the music up here.

  • @GoddessLennox Not true. There is only one God, and we can reach unbelievable potential through our Savior Jesus. I would advise you to try reading the Bible.

    Peace out.

  • @Jantv81 thats an opinion. this isnt a test of ur faith. go preach elsewhere n stop buggin' me :D

  • @GoddessLennox Feeling ignorant are we? Tell me the history of the world!! Oh, wait you can't, cause if you could you would be our Higher Power.

    God BLESS!!

  • she was a great inspiration to all even though I was very young when she begin to sang a lot these songs but now that I'm saved and living a christian life I understand everything that she sang about I wish they would play more of those kind of songs on the radio the old gospel songs maybe that will bring more people closer to God.

  • awesome, sincere, classy , true G0d fearing woman of God. she took her music very seriously and didn't play with God by singing gospel and dipping and dabbling in secular or jazz music. we need more faithful women of God like Mahalia. i watched a great bio on tv about how she was obedient to her pastor, and did whatever they asked and tithe,/offering.

  • Kick ass voice!!! Just discovered her over a documentary, and have become an admirer since.

  • Mahalia use to wake me up on Sunday mornings when I was a kid. In my sleep I could hear the "crackling" sound when the needle touched the record.

  • @October33rd ...Yes Lord.....memories of this and other Mahalia songs playing on my Grandmother's record player as we were having Sunday Morning Breakfast before Sunday School and Church..... This is my favorite Mahalia song.......Mahalia makes you want to go to heaven!!!! I wanna see Paul and Silas......Old Man Daniel, the Hebrew Children and the Rose of Sharon!!!!! Amen

  • as a youth this lp played continuosly..day and night..years later it became scratched..but it still continued playing..almost skipping every word..but it didnt matter..the song was embedded in my soul....thank ya...

  • why are all these movies out here about some white man doin exorcisms? this is pure exorcism music right here. if this don't drive those demons out....nothing else would.

  • Good morning all. I just love listening to the Mother of Gospel Music. For me, it's nothing like the good old time gospel music. "Thank God"... allowing me to hear such inspirational music.

  • who were the three morons that didnt like this....so powerful!!!

  • this is all my grandmom and aunts and mom listen to good gospel jazz and old songs. i love her her voice is touching and i love it.

  • Priceless!!!!!!!!

  • SHE IS A BEAST!!!!!!! NOT BEYONCE, WHITNEY HOUSTON, MARIAH, OR ANY OTHER ARTISTS BUT MAHALIA IS MY GREATEST INSPIRATION!!!1

  • Lord, Thy God! As I listen to Ms. Mahalia Jackson my heart is filled with joy. Lord, if we as people make it thus far as Ms. Mahalia Jackson did...oh! how please God would be. I "Thank God" being able to learn of the late Ms. Mahalia Jackson.

  • EVERY TIME I HEAR THIS SONG TEARS COME. WANT THIS SONG SANG AT MY HOMEGOINING. HOPE ITS NO TIME SOON THOUGH

  • YESSSS SANG IT HALEY!

  • Her voice was so powerful. Thank God for her and for everyone posting her songs.

  • Here's my witness ! ! I haven't heard this for many years - I used to have an album back then .

As absolute favorite - will howdy, howdy and never goodbye!

Yeah I'll be there the heard my name called from the roll! ! !

  • I can't wait to sing with her in Heaven, or just listen to her!

  • Whenever I think I can't take my life anymore, with all of its struggles and pain and frustration and drudgery and disappointment and broken-dreams, well...I listen to Mahalia sing and I am refreshed and renewed! Her God-given talent in singing makes me happy and makes me able to go on! Life IS beautiful...and Ms. Jackson makes me remember that! I can't wait to see her and talk to her in Heaven! And I'll thank her! And then, we'll both praise our Lord Jesus together!

  • @michaeldj5 AMEN GOD HAS A PLAN FOR US ALL I'M JUST 31 AND I LOVE HER MUSIC SHE REMIND ME OF MY GRANDMA. I LOVE THIS SONG.

  • No fancy equipment, gadgets, glittering gowns, colored lights, nothing but pure soul-stirring ministry...!!! My Lord! I miss this...!!!

  • Yes Lord!!!

  • May He always be with us no matter what we do or fail to do. And may our Blessed Mother pray for us to Her precious Son and carry our prayers to Him. For he is our Lamb of God. ....I do hope he is with me now. More than ever. ♥

  • having some church before I GO TO BED can I get an AMEN ?

  • @maCapone1 Amen and AMEN!!!

  • It's my very first time hearing this song....Superb, is all I can say. They all (Aretha, Albertina, Shirley, Tramaine, James Cleveland, Cissy, even Martha Wash) must have been inspired by her......Just learned that this song was sort of like Michael Jackson's "Thriller", back in the day.....selling over 8 million copies and hard to keep stocked in the record store back then.....wOw....Thank U for posting this and thank U Mahalia for your gifts @ the world for repeated generational inspiration

  • @KassanovaBrowne Oh dear, PLEASE don't compare the divine, spiritual Mahalia to that pervert Michael Jackson.

  • @TreasureOne

If it wasnt for michael jackson as much as you dislike him alot of the barriers which he broke down for non white music acts would still be up

  • Aman Aman

  • @KassanovaBrowne Mahalia simply radiates not only her magnificant voice - but a truly spiritual inner drive that reaches out far beyond thebeautiful song- to the underlying loving devotion and feeling of connection with the Lord. Late in her life she was interviewed by the great Person-to-Person interviewer Edward R. Murrow at her home. She was so "real" and sweet, & if I recall so pleased with marrying after many years. I think this song was the 1st Million $ +++ gospel song in music history.

  • She has a beautiful voice!!!

  • Wow! What a journey as you listen to the highs and lows of her voice. I feel like she's truly taking me higher. Love to hear her sing!

  • Great song!

  • I love this song so much!

  • I heard this before but I didnt know the name. Sing Mahalia

  • Mahalia Jackson is my favorite gospel artist...Praise God for the legacy she left behind...

  • My favorite singer of all times. Love you, Lady! I WILL sing with you in the Heavenly choir one day.

  • WOW, When songs USE TO be about JESUS, HEAVEN and LIVING FOR GOD!

  • Always howdy, howdy, never goodbye.

  • @mcpm4 what means howdy?

(I'm from Greece and Google tranclator doesn't help)

  • @pepermint26 Howdy just means "hello". always hello and never goodbye since parting is such sweet sorrow, but earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot cure.

  • @mcpm4 thank you for the explanation :)

i think this is my favorite gospel

  • One of the best singers of all time....a distinct, beautiful tone and a melodius instrument.....clear, concise & full of joy & life.

  • Simply Amazing voice, GOD gave her the talent of singing & a wonderful voce to Praise him & that what She Did, Praise him with that wonderful Voice

  • Just beautiful!

  • Thank you jojojola for posting the great and extraordinary Mahalia Jackson singing "I will move on up a little higher". I use to speed walk to this song and before I know I would be unable to walk without praising my heavenly father. This is such a powerful and dynamic message. I have always been inspired by Mahalia Jackson. She overflowed with God given gifts and talents. I have so much love and respect for Ms. Jackson!

  • luv this woman of GOD

  • Yes I have been a admirer of Mahalia Jackson since my childhood. She is one of the greatest if not the greatest. She is Maha Lila a great story teller and lover of God.

This is a great site. If anyone would like to write about Mahalia Jackson you can contact me at pspbtgv2001@yahoo.com

  • Shes my grand mother cousin. when you look at my grand mother i see her.

  • From the time I was a small child, Mahalia could always make me feel the power of God. I am now now 67 and she still does the same thing. When life is on the down side

hearing her voice makes me want to start climbing back up.

I am assured she is happy now..

  • Lord, let her be there. Let my mother and father be there. This was my mother's favorite song. She loved some Mahalia! God bless their souls.

  • she could sing. and my nana used to love her so much.

  • This is making me think of my Great Grandma back in the 70's. Well gotta stop typing and get tissue.

  • I LOVE ME SOME MAHALIA!!

  • If I make it to heaven I'd like Mahalia as my tour guide. She makes the streets of gold and pearly gates sound like the place to be. I have loved her voice and testimony since childhood. At 62 am looking forward to moving up higher.

  • Shalom. To all the children scattered in the lands of our captivity. Deliverance is near.

  • Y'all it's almost time...

  • wow i just picked this up on my guitar amp lol ty music god

  • A bazillion years ago when I was still living at home with my parents .. I used to get up at midnight when I could wake up, and watch Mahalia end the broadcast day on one of the local TV stations in Portland, OR. Loved her then .. Love her now, and she still touches my heart with joy.

  • I love how Mahalia says "Hebrew Children". She says, "Hebrew Chill-run", lol...Love the pronounciation of her words.

  • My grandmother (who'll be 90 years old this year) would sing gospel songs around the house in that old bluesy way when I was a kid. I didn't recognize the influence was from Mahalia Jackson until I got older. I truly appreciate her so much more now. I've got to get my hands on some Mahalia Jackson discs to send to her. My grandmother would love them.

  • @71666kdb There's something tt this sister that when you hear her voice makes your eyes water!

  • My Goodness! What a delight to listen to! It has become one of my favorites!

  • I hate the way I post a text in response to something and it appears as a rndom comment that makes no sense! There was a comment which referred to the Ovation program on Mahalia Jackson and it was that comment to which I was referring. This ramdim comment system sucks, just in case anyone cares!

  • Mahalia wrote this song. This is her own original composition, and was her first big hit in the late 1940s.

  • i thought W. Herbert Brewster and Virgina Davis wrote this song and Mahalia was given the chance to be the vocals.

  • You may be right....I had always thought that Mahalia wrote it herself.

  • This is how gospel is supposed to sound. Ms. Jackson sang with her heart, because she believed that better days were coming despite the suffering of our people. God bless her!

Ovation TV had a two hour special on Ms. Jackson entitled "The Power and the Glory" playing this month. A wonderful documentary on the life of this extraordinary woman.

  • I just saw it! It played tonight on Ovation and I loved it! It is the reason I am listening to this particular song right now, because this was the song that started her professional career.

  • This song is so spiritual on so many levels.

    RIP Mahalia

  • One of Mahalia's "best of the best" songs!

    Her piano player is fantastic!

  • That's the one and only Mildred Falls on piano...

  • This is my very favourite of all her songs!!!

  • she has a truely fanominal voice , i love it . i wish i could have met her ,

  • First time I heard this song was in a uncommon place: Moscow, USSR around 1966. Born in Rwanda, Central Africa, the music sounded so familiar, so close to me that I couldn't help crying. I was sure I have heard that music before but where and when? No idea. Maybe before I was born... And now, that same feeling again. Glory to the Lord.

  • That sounds like a beautiful story I'm sure many can benefit from hearing.

  • I want to be there!!

  • God bless you for posting this.

  • Just great, I love this song. Thanks

  • I truly miss the bluesy tone of gospel in its early day. MJ arguably the best gospel singer ever could very well had been the greatest blues singer if she had chosen the secular route.

  • @Ravenluc I would say she is the best gospel singer, her voice is moving, u can feel it in your bones.

  • i would like to meet mahalia in heaven and ask her how did she get such a trmendous voice. Its so soulful and powerful it don't make no sense My God what a voice Thank you God for that Mahalia Jackson

  • I love this song; it's one of my favorites. I can equally appreciate the background music as much as the good soulful singing. Can I get a witness somebody?

  • @classyteacherdiva fully agree with you that song is one of my favorites I have no words to express the immense honor of discovering the legacy she left us, today many black artists are stealing what was pure in soul music in order to succeed in their careers by selling their souls to the D., never in my life have I heard music as pure means towards an angel who announces the holy words. The Lord bless her soul and rest in peace! Amen

  • @classyteacherdiva Oh yes it's my favorit song to! Move on up a little higher to see the Lord Jesus Amen !.. so God Bless her soul I'believe she rest in peace!!....

  • AMEN

  • @classyteacherdiva I love her singing and who ever is playing the music for her is wow,did they play.Good music

  • @classyteacherdiva imma witness.

  • @classyteacherdiva : I love this song tooo!!!!! Mahalia makes you want to go to heaven!!!! I wanna see Paul and Silas......Old Man Daniel, the Hebrew Children and the Rose of Sharon!!!!! Amen

  • @classyteacherdiva Me too!! Amen!! Praise Jesus!!! Yes, I'm gonna move up a little higher, not just when I get to Heaven but right here! I believe that God is calling all His children to a higher place in Him.

  • @classyteacherdiva Me too!! Amen!! Praise Jesus!!! Yes, I'm gonna move on up a little higher, not just when I get to Heaven but right here! I believe that God is calling all His children to a higher place in Him.

  • Thank you so much for posting!

  • My dad introduced me to Mahalia's music, and he was an atheist! He just knew really good music when he heard it. Thank you for posting this. Dad had this very same record.

  • WOW Jeanhartely... sure says a lot about Ms. Mahailia, doesn't it? :)

  • Love Love Love this song !!!!!!

  • I want to sing with her in HEAVEN... thank you JESUS.....

  • I remember listening to Mahalia with my grandmother. Takes me back in time...

  • I first learned about Mahalia by listening with my grandma too.

  • AMEN, This song and God knows this lady is annointed, she helps me and my soul, my daughter Theresa is in the hands of the LORD.

  • 1:51 - 2:32 I love how her voice expands

  • that voice is so powerful!!!!!

  • I LOVE Mahalia's voice. Been listening to it since I was a little girl and still listen to the same albums now (33 long playing records ) She is my all time favorite Female Gospel Singer. She is an anointed singer and inspiration to me. Thank you for this treasure you have graciously shared with us.

  • Now THAT is singing!!!

  • it's little ironic though, how did the voice of god " mahalia " inspire the voice of the devil " Rock N' Roll " !!

she was inducted in the rock n' roll hall of fame as an early influence !!

anyway , both of mahalia and rock n' roll ... ROCK !!

  • Can't wait to meet her in heaven!!!

  • I love this song. It really tells the story of how Jesus carries us throught this world and one morning we will meet Him in heaven...will you be there? I'll be looking for you reound the altar...Thanks for blessing us with this song. I'm a Hispanic immigrant in this country; I came seeking the american dream and Jesus found me...I found the Gospel of Jesus Christ, I found eternal life.

  • When I graduated from high school, I listened to her before bed. It wasn't that I was spiritual; I was troubled! Little did I know that I would come to Christ one year later in Germany. I really do not believe anyone has picked up her manta. There are hundreds of gospel singers, but the ability to paint pictures with words is exclusively Mahalia Jackson. I appreciate the fact you said God found you. Thousands of others will be found , for God plans to set Latin America on fire.

  • i never heard of Mahalia Jackson but she is a great singer and i love this song!

  • Glorious singing and I Love the song I never have heard before. What an artist !

Great comp in the background too with the swing.

  • Teta Mahalija je zakon. Zakon kažem!!!

  • This is the one of the many gospel songs that I would hear early sunday morning when I was a little girl. My mom played many of the old gospel groups and of course the famous Ms. Mahalia Jackson and I fell in love with her voice instantly. She was truly annointed with Holy Spirit and blessed with the Holy Spirit in her voice. God Bless the beautiful angel that God has sent for us to treasure and enjoy for the time she was here. I can't wait to see her on the other side.

  • sorry to say.... but she aint talking bout buddah.... she talking bout Jesus!

  • Mahalia praised the Name of JESUS.

The only Name by which we must be saved. You are right she has some voice.

  • @viperfishsasori ..GLORY BE TO THE FATHER...TODAY I TURNED 60..AND I WAS HONORED TO SEE MS MAHALIA..THIS IS MY FAVORITE...WHEN I LEAVE THIS EARTH TO GET MY CROWN...I WANT MAHALIA SINGING THIS!!!!!!

  • @inani122784 HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS YOU....KEEP ON PRAISING HIS HOLY NAME! HUGS AND MUCH LOVE!

  • Is this the 1954 recording or the original 1947 recording.

  • 1954 recording. the '47 recording has a much slower tempo and is more "crustier" (Apollo) sounding... It is, however, on youtube...

  • do you have "a rusty old halo" by mahalia.. i think it's first one i heard by her

  • the mother of our church sung this song and tore it up! it was beautiful

  • Mahalia was the best. no one ever like her. We still have her fabulous music like this one Move on Up a Little Higher. Thanks for the post.

  • chills!! praise Jesus!

  • This song was written by Mahalia herself. She recorded this song and it became her first million copy sold. Her estate continues to bring in over 1 million dolloars a year for her family.

This lady had great convictions and love for the music she sang. In every song there was never a doubt who she was singing praises to and about. Thank God for children like Ms Jackson that can inspire .

    Read and Obey Act 2:38

  • Not to take anything away from Jackson, but she didn't write this song. It was written by Rev. William Brewster in 1947. It's a great song and she sounds incredible.

  • What does she say at 1:55-1:57??? I'm going outside........(what else???)

  • oh Lord I'm Going Out Sight-Seeing In Beulah

    march All Around God's Altar

    walk And Never Get Tired

    fly Lord And Never Falter

  • I'm going out sight seeing in Beaulah

  • she was a great great woman of God. she stayed true to her gospol back ground even when some wanted her to sing blues even though when she was young she use to sneak and listen to al the great blues music.

  • the first gospel song i ever heard and still my favorite,i remember my mom singing it on sunday morning while cooking breakfast.

  • the songs alright

  • one of my favourite songs

  • MAHALIA!!!!! :) :)

  • Yes thank god for her! This song was in a very special dream I had! I encourage all to listen to her as I believe that god used her in that dream to speak to me! I believe he has and will do the same for others! This original gospel music is unique and offers comfort, encouragement and a message for all.x

  • This is true Gospel. I like the New and Hip stuff but it's nothing like those old Gospel songs those old spirituals

  • Thank you Jesus for Mahalia. What a voice! My speakers are shaking and so is my soul!!!

  • Is She Still Alive

  • No, she passed in 1972 of Heart failure.

  • @jojojola sad face

  • It was the songs that Miss Mahalia sung (I really listened to the words)and I would say what is she talking about. "THE BIBLE" "THE WORD", With her help I really found a FRIEND.

  • "I'm gonna lay down my cross:get me a crown"! Just in case you didn't understand what Mahalia was saying.

  • I have her name. And with this name I will sing. To make her proud. As I go to church with my head held high. To pray, to find, and to reach a greater faith. Amen

  • I grew up listening to Miss Jackson's music. I was three or four when she died, but I have all of her music on CD. No Gospel performer can approach her talent. She will always be the best!

  • woooooo thank ya i just love mahalia jackson

  • You gotta listen, she's saying that she's going to meet with all the disciples and all of the people of the LORD.

  • Greatest gospel icon ever. A true sevant of the LORD.
