Hey Toki52, contrary to popular belief (a myth in fact) you do NOT have to turn to the right after crossing first base after hitting the ball. As long as the runner does not make an attempt to run to 2nd base he cannot be tagged out. Obviously, this is a judgement call by the Umpire but, for an Umpire to make that call it would take an obvious move by the runner towards 2nd to be called out on a tag by the 1st baseman.
