The same thing happened to Circuit City, except I don't believe they have any more retail stores. Good thing Tiger Direct/Systemax makes some pretty good calls. It really makes me wonder why the god awful overpriced Best Buy stores are doing so well.

I use to work at CompUSA during the time that we closed down. And damn it Alfred!!! you reminded me of the time I looted the place with my employee discount about two weeks before the announcement. I remember getting that same firewire cable for around $2.38ish. I laugh to this day that these stores made almost no money on hardware(only TVs), but made boat loads on the accessories like that cable which mostly no one purchased.  And with their legendary crap service how could they not fail?

Tiger Direct bought out some 23 stores in Florida, and Texas. The website has been revamped as well. For the CompUSA shopper little has changed

Except there's no Mac section anymore. (Apple cut a deal with Best Buy after CompUSA tanked.) And you can't depend on the web site to reflect what's actually in the store. They're two very different lists of goods for sale. That's my experience, anyway...

The truth is that Carlos Slim had no choice but to sell the CompUSA franchise. I've always noticed that CompUSA's prices were overblown. Best Buy indeed has much better selection and prices. I recall last month that I saw Windows Vista Premium Home Ed. being sold after markdown for $204. I then purchased the exact same product (brand new) from Ebay for $116.00, shipping and handling costs included!

Actually, systemax managed to keep the website, and 16 of the stores. There was a story on engadget about it. They already closed down the store near me, but there is one left in the state capital, Lansing. I hope they keep that one.
