@Cheesetoon If it's a small flow like this, you can get within a few feet. The intense radiant heat of larger flows keeps you at longer distances. The main danger on this flow was that the trees were being burned at the base and they would come crashing down with no warning. I would keep an eye on trees which the lava had reached and stay at a distance where the trees would not reach me.
There is typically one flow at a time and you can trace its progress by checking the USGS link.
oh, and a random question....did the large tree in the left of the video at 0:30 die, the one with the small tongue of lava rolling across one of its roots? I know that sounds like a stupid "duh" question but trees are tough things.....so ya never know.
@Brivixxycej8 Yes, all the vegetation in a swath about half mile wide died in the next several weeks and this video was taken about the middle of that swath. Trees can survive next to flows if the trunk isn't burnt at the base and the flow doesn't linger long enough to cook the root system.
i love watching bubbles in the lava form and burst out flames as the flow rolls across the forest litter....reminds me of footage of the Kilauea Iki eruption. :)
Not anywhere, just above the section of the tube still connected to the source. The present lava tube is about seven miles long from the source in the East Rift Zone to where it empties in the ocean. If there is a blockage, say at four miles from the source, then the lava will come out of the tube at its weakest point anywhere upstream of the blockage. It will then flow on the surface until it crusts over and forms a new tube. It can also come out if there is a surge in the supply of lava.
This is extremely cool... or should I say HOT ha haha haaaaaaaa im funy

Its to bad they could not use a little C-4 to divert the flow back into the sea.

so i dont get it, the lava can pop out of the ground anywhere if their is a blockage in the lava tube?
