I think gripen-C was a modest performance fighter. But the NG version improve well some weak points: top class radar system, more thrust and longer inflight range. I wonder the new price though...
Actually I'm a pro Rafale, but I think both Rafale F4 and Gripen NG are the most adequate response for today's airforces requirements in being highly multirole and budget friendly. Maybe gripen need a carrier version to match the versatility of the rafale
@Mymosah if I believe they can easily make a carrier version of this, but they have not done so because none of their customers have ordered one with carrier capabilities.

I especially like that IRST(?) placement beneath the cockpit? Interesting. The NG is a timely, well-conceived upgrade and a cost effective alternative for anyone (even the USAF, imho) in the market to replace their respective old, retiring fleet. God speed.

@wellerocks There is no need for replacing C/D. And when they do it, it will be called E/F and probably happen around 2020. E/F will be based on NG as NG only is a name for the product that will be finalized from the Demonstrator if India or Brazil buy it. If no one buy it, Saab will just continue to develop NG until someone buy it or it become E/F. Nothing fuzzy about it, the current NG Demonstrator, were originally a Gripen A, then later modified to a Gripen C and is today a Gripen NG.
@kassbest Well that I know, but the government has already signed a contract saying that they're going to upgrade the last 31 A's to C's within a couple of years and that they will purchase E/F's just not when. The upgrade from the C -> E is much more comprehensive. Rumors says that the first Gripen E/Fs might be delivered around 2014 - 2018. But first the C/D will get the MS 20 upgrade (meteor integration)
@kassbest The MS 21 is the next more comprehensive upgrade from the C/D that but it is clear that MS 21 is in fact the NG, with the General Electric F414G engine, modified airframe, Selex Galileo Raven ES-05 active, AESA radar, Skyward-G infrared search and track (IRST) system and new core avionics. But FMV insists on the E/F having 1100 lbs in maximum start weight than the NG demo.
@kassbest but since Sweden has gotten fewer and fewer Air force bases, and the Gripens main objective is intercepting and protecting Swedens territory. That is why a faster, more maneuverable Gripen with a lot more advanced radar system aswell as armament is necessary. The Gripen NG is the ultimate choice. It will be able to support Sweden foreign and domestic against threats until the year of 2040 when a new 5:th generation fighter must have been introduced.

@wellerocks ,Jupp. Regeringen vill ha svar i mars innan vårproppen för att se om de krävs ytterliga omfördelning eller tillskjutande av pengar i detta skede eller om man kan ta ur befintlig investeringsram. Definitionsfas just nu... finns en del som är klart och kontrakterat inom avionik hur som helst och där gasar Saab på lite mer nu. Man har spridit ut kostnaderna rätt bra faktiskt..

Accordning to SAAB equal or lower then the C/D.
SAAB uses mostly off the shelf systems in the NG(E/F) and the cost variables are very small.
