  • i was on the bus too, made the driver stop in chapel en le frith outside a pub and loads of us piled out to use the toilet, been necking beers all the way.

  • Heaven Up Here (1981) is one of Courtney Love's favorite albums. And how I understand her!

  • Hooray for girls! Bloke? please.

  • I was on the mystery tour to this gig. I think I still have the ticketsetc somewhere.

  • Will Sergeant is the godfather of shoegaze!

  • Madness.

  • Pure class, and I remember this like it was yesterday! My sister went to this, it was a freebie mystery tour that no one had a clue where they were going... Right in the middle of Derbyshire with snow blizzards!!!

  • hey psycho

many thanks for upping this... incredible track

  • Magic - thanks for putting this up.

  • the best live version

    with friction

  • got to admit people had much better music to listen to in the 80's...

  • This must have been a kick ass concert!!

  • so powerful. this song owns, i wish I had a million versions of it, still wouldnt be enough

  • I remember talking to Pete after a show back in 1981 and he showed me his hands and he had raw blisters. I mentioned that it looked painful and he replied with a grin "nah, once im "on" i cant feel anything" Pete was in the zone and was by far the best drummer of the 1980s. Hands down.

  • Yes, Pete was/is an amazing drummer - as Ian said a few years ago "that's why he's a Bunnymen" - wish Les was still playin' bass with them too - but see them live now, and they are fck'n AWESOME!!!!

  • Hes like a human drum machine!

the only drummer who comes close is probably stephen morris of joy division.... he had this style though i dont think he was quite as impressive.

  • Truly amazing drumming by Pete. Listen and wonder.

  • Pete was just the best drummer ever.

  • Absolutely SPOT ON!!!!.....He was a REALLY nice bloke as well.

We miss you, Pete. We'll meet again in the netherworld.....

  • @louisorleans Yes He was and this is one of the best examples of Live drumming ever. RIP Pete and Jake. Very sadly missed

  • FAB lollies!!

Manics ripped this off later, own up lads. Camotour.

  • Greatest band in the world.

  • The drumming on this is brilliant! RIP Pete

  • great song great version

  • one of the most important groups to have come out of my homeland = Liverpool.this is by far one of my all time fave's by them.have been an Echo fanatic for 28 years now and i NEVER tire from listening to their music."pure-class".

  • At 2:48 Mr Will Sergeant of Liverpool creates the "Shoegazer" stance that would be imitated so many times years later, but never equaled.

  • That is some drumming. Like John Bonham, Keith Moon and Dave Grohl all rolled into one.

  • pete defritas was the best drummer in the world for the still - best band in the world!

  • That's why Ian said "(Pete) always felt like he was an outsider, but he wasn't , he was a Bunnyman" - still the best band in the world!~ Sir Doug.

  • IT.SHINE.SO HARD........

  • great! perfect voice+guitar+bass+DRUMS!!!!!!!!

  • Pete kicked ass.

  • U2 what? shit...U2 use to be the opening act for Echo..and meanwhile stole their sound. ECHO FOR EVER. ps. i regret with my life not asking WILL SARGENT's for his autograph or talk to him while he was at the pharmacy next door to the theater in akron, ohio. i was like..is it him? and yes, it was him..DAMN IT!

  • Wow...that does suck...at least you got to see him...he is the best guitarist of all time in my opinion...just magical. All others should bow down to him.

  • oh girl...ur the first person who replies to my story!! lol...i mean, he was outside the pharmacy talking on the phone, the theater was next door. i went to pharmacy to buy a roll of film to take pics. anyways, i told my friend, "my god, is that will Sargent?" and yes, i was first row in the theater and it was him! i had bought an echo mug, a calendar and a shirt..lol..sorry, i had to share more of the story with you bunnE....

  • cheers candy, it did the goosebump thing for me too! and just think how much more bass i can give it now! fantastic, the stuff of legend.

  • psychocandy77, I must thank you. I've just watched this and I have goosebumps and my hair is standing on end. I remember seeing them do this live and the feeling of being left breathless afterwards. Long live the Bunnymen. God bless Pete. We miss you.

  • I am so lucky. I got to see Peter De Freitas and the boys doing this song. Amazing gig.

  • The drumming is mesmerising! Listen to it on good headphones or LOUD. Love it

  • Definitely. Air drumming with a spliff

  • Wow! Thanks for lashin' this up. 'Shine So Hard' is one of my most cherished pieces of vinyl. I had the hair-do and everything. A long rain-coat for me Joy Division days and an Israeli Army combat jacket (my preference at Army & Navy back then) for the Bunnymen days... aah

    Nice-one pcychocandy77 you're a legend

  • I have this 12 inch! Excellent!!!!!!

  • WHAT??? Live or recorded version?

  • it is call SHINE SO HARD..and believe me..it is HARD TO FIND..and i mean, very very hard to find!

  • That's a fact. I bought Heaven up Here as soon as it was released and it's still gives me a spooky rush, especially after some good smoke a juana..

  • twenty years or so later i still get a big rush from this song. great stuff!

  • Just want to say nice one to the bloke (lets face it it usually is a bloke) who uploaded this one.

For me it was allways Bunnyment, MaryChain then Smiths/New Order cropping up a poor third

  • hey, it's not a bloke, I'm a girl .

  • @psychocandy77 Hooray for girls! Bloke? please.

  • Why would you rank the Smiths/New Order a "poor" anything? All those bands you mentioned are equal in greatness.

  • I was a big bunnymen fan at the time of their first album, but you`re right TEAWNI, The importance of New Order (more so than Joy Division, believe me) cannot be overstressed. New order were the gateway for dance music and even the whole rave scene in britain.

  • Cheers. A lot of things wouldn't have happened if it weren't for New Order or several bands around at that time.

  • @crapidious but new order got sooo boring, joy division are far more relevant

  • @deathcommander the whole of this gig is uploaded somewhere on here.

  • Classic this is one of the Anthems of a generation . An indie anthem a classic song of the 80´s like a forest by the cure

  • saw them '81 capitol theatre sydney.fucking life changing, thanks for the ride mac

  • RIP Peter De Freitas, the drumming is feckin mad on this!

  • davejaydisco is right. And God bless Pete for bringing us The Wild Swans.

  • great song great version

  • god bless the past, but the bunnymen died with pete.

  • Excellent song

  • I was there!Great gig. Free tickets from the music press - but a secret location - you had to work out the clues to fnd out where the gig was.

Bunnymen and all the fans were into combat gear at the team. When hundreds of us arrived in genteel Buxton the old folks thought there was another war breaking out or something!

    Happy days.

  • I was there but have yet to see the footage .I remember that coaches were put on from various places but We didn't know where We were going to and the coach went all around Liverpool before heading to Buxton .Must of all looked well weird us lot in camo buying cakes out of misus miggins pie shops !!

Since seeing this I am now looking for the Shine So Hard original video still have the tape and 12" of the e.p.

Thanks for this brought back a great day out to an old fella !

  • I've got the 12" too and I've been waiting to see the whole film for longer than I care to remember ;-) Thanks for uploading this one psychocandy!

  • Excellent guitar wailing! An ATLAS Adventure!

  • classic....hands down! its a bummer that we dont get to see the likes of these classic bands anymore. fantastic sound and the drumming is breathtaking.

  • They are still going, have a look around! Liverpool in December for one!!!

  • Absolutely great to find this video!

  • Saw Echo & the Bunnymen live 3 time when they were at their height. This song is immense live! Wish I could see them again

  • I am 35, and I play this song every single day, when I take a shower, before going to work. My neighbors must hate me by now.

  • i play this song first, second, then third before i go on to the rest of "heaven up here". what does anyone think of "broke my neck"? i think u2 may owe the bunnymen money since "exit" off of joshua tree sounds too much like "over the wall".

  • "broke my neck" will always be one of my all-time-favourites.

  • 10 4 returnsaecho

    they owe 'em heaps

  • me also

i saw this on australian tv 1982 i think.
