  • How I regret not growing up in the late 70s.

The Muppet Show episode with Doug Henning brought me here, and I am still amazed by every single one of his tricks! o_O Wish I could have been a kid back then, sitting in front of a remote-less color TV, watching this live (was it live?).

  • very good!!

  • It's Magic!

  • Edna doesn't seem very impressed.

  • That Rubic'c cube trick is genius in design.

Close-up magic is always the best magic.

  • cool on NBC

  • It sounded like "Cocks and Balls" :D:D

  • I used to love the Doug Henning specials on NBC when I was a kid.....He was amazing

  • Aw hes kind & friendly!

  • Aw hes kind

  • he's fantastic. though i can't help but notice that his voice reminds me of one of those old mormon cartoons.

  • A true Master Magician

  • trick photography? Uhhh donsn't he mean trick videography? LOL

  • R.I.P.

  • Criss Angel is a talentless bum compared to Henning IMHO. This guy was awesome and doesn't get near enough credit.

  • i saw him st the orpheum theater in Mn when i was 8 years old...awesome and a wonder guy.

  • whoa doug thinks i'm a genius and i think he's one as well.....i guess genius minds think alike :P

  • WOW!!!

  • why does the rubix cube have like 3 red sides??

  • I can solve the rubik's cube, and I'm not a genius

  • @ToroAnimations Neither you and less zalron69...

  • u know people talking about criss angels special effects and stuff go see him live and then watch him ohh yea u forgot about mac king by the way hes like another doug in my opinion

  • cups and balls penn and teller style so frikin well

  • @coolpearlz

Doug Hennings created everything Criss Angel does or has done. If it weren't for Copperfield, Burton, Henning, Ammar. Angel wouldn't be anything. I will say this on Angel's behalf. It isn't all camera tricks. I've read his biography, and have since discovered he is an honest person.

  • @TheMusicvent Nope; but he has alot of stooges

  • He never shows the white of the cube

  • Criss Angel is bullshit

  • Just hes look is hilarious!

  • @coolpearlz, angel may rule, but thats not because he has talent:( there is SO much more merit in what close ups and sleight of hand artist do than the big illusions of criss angel. don't let his success make you think otherwise

  • Cyril Takayama rules!! , but this magician also does!!

  • what is the rubix cube trick called?

  • Doug Henning was such an upbeat and really nice person this really was evident in his performances. He had such a peaceful energy with such enthusiasm. A fond memory for so many growing up in the late 70 early 80s Check out the Magic Show on Broadway its on DVD a true work of art from one of magics masters

  • lol . vary intertaining.

  • Little Too Childish... lol

  • if i was the ball ide be scared and go home to

  • Have you noticed how he put the cup down on his lap, right before the onion?

And the lemon was in the yellow handkerchief when he cleaned the cup with it.

  • The rubiks cube trick is easy. I won't tell the trick, but notice how he doesnt show the bottom side.

  • he was great saw him on tv when i was a kid and have loved magic to this day.

  • The thing about Doug was, his love for performing. He wasn't the best, but then again who is? I have met many during my 40 years of performing. Blackstone jr, Copperfield before he made it big and many others. The thing Doug brought to magic was the fun. Yes today most are making thier names exposing all the secrets that many of us kept tight within, and are really ruining the fun of magic.

Doug and Debbie brought back the fun of magic.

  • Doug did perform lots of illusions before David Copperfield did. At first Copperfield saw Doug perform. Doug was not the best performer because he was no pop star like David Copperfield. No matter if music or magic, "good looking", "great clothes", "vip dinners", and so far, are today much more important for the audience like in former times.

    RIP Doug Henning!

  • i know how the rubiks cubes ones done.. but i'd be a prick to give it away

  • well, that was a colorful time, wasnt it?

  • Wow now that's what I call real magic.

  • What sweetness and charm. Doug really did bring joy to his performances. This is Larry Jennings' chop cup routine; Larry was 180 degrees from Doug in life, but loved magic as much (if not more than Doug). Amazing that our little craft could bring together such different men.

  • Doug breathed new life back into magic. Before Copperfield, before Burton, before Angel, there was Doug Henning.

Copperfield has that same inner spark that Henning had. Lance Burton brings a charm and dignity to the art.

Angel brings camera tricks and digital effects.

Gone are the days of magical honor and respect for the art. Today, the internet is full of bad amateurs revealing magic's secrets.

Doug was a friend, a gentleman, and mentor. I miss him. The art needs another Doug Henning.

  • @hairmagic criss angel s the biggest fraud of history of the magic. And the "magician" that support him are hypocrites.

  • @hairmagic I completely understand being a big fan of Doug Henning, but why slam Criss Angel, who constantly pays homage and promotes the life of Doug Henning? They are both incredibly talented performers, that's why there's so few who reach their status.

  • @hairmagic What do you think of Cyril?

  • @hairmagic i agree with what u said but the comment about criss angel is kinda lame, he does use stooges from time to time, not all the time, and he does not use digital effect or cuts, just angles but besides that i agree

  • @blacktig34 As a professional magician/designer,and consultant for 30 years, I can assure you that cuts and digital effects are indeed used. Stooges are used in gross excess. Angel seems to be of the opinion that entertainment value, regardless of means, is more important than performance integrity. I work with the top pros around the world, and the general consensus among them concerning Angel's type of entertainment is that it is NOT in the best interest of the art.

  • @hairmagic Doug was a pioneer, but Copperfield's presentation and performance is as near to perfection as possible. From his quickness to even the music he uses,it is all thought and worked on to the max.

  • @rounick i agree. Copperfield is without question, the greatest illusionist of our time. Most of his performances are flawless, although I did see one show that was a wreck a few years ago. We have have off nights. Copperfield makes magic fun and like Henning before him, he puts the magic back into the art.

  • @hairmagic - why would that BÉ ? - I dont understand. In Fact I enjoy Angel, Blaine,m and all modern illusionists more then the ones from the past.

sure they were good, but their presentation would be useless nowadays since it doesnt appeal to anyone but the elderly.

Wich is what you are arent you:P Old?

  • @pklukepk For you to make a comment like that demonstrates your youthful ignorance. You're just beginning to grow hair on your nuts and you think you know everything. Henning, Copperfield, and the old masters of the art never used video or editing trickery. What you saw was what you got. They depended on their skill and mastery of the art to pull off their miracles, not video trickery. They were concerned with and preserved the integrity of the art. That is what Angel and Blaine don't do.

  • @hairmagic - its funny for you to call me ignorant, when you comment about my age without actually knowing it (ignorance) furthermore you assume I think I know everything (ignorance) plus you assume that video trickery, is different from trickery in general (ignorance) and you assume , im taking Criss as a example, uses video trickery "all the time" (ignorance) - you are not even worthy of a discussion with me "old man"

  • @hairmagic And before him there was this guy named Tony Slydini who is scary.

  • RIP Doug.

The rubix cube trick was real art.

  • RIP Doug

  • must learn that rubix cube thing

  • he had me at the lemon...

then he brought out the onion...

    he's too good

  • yep doug henning saved magic and david seth kotkin copperfield perserved it:)

i have all doug henning NBC specials

plus all of copperfields SPECIALS on CBS an his first special on ABC called the magic of ABC starringdavid copperfield and all of sig frig androys

    NBC specials and ABC specials

either pure slight of hand or it works automatically or its a cool illusion at angles rigged up

    to look mixed up

if he used a top it its pure slight of hand

  • back when girls commonly wore knee high socks.

  • awesome magician was dogh henning before copperfield

  • Jeeesus! That was impressive! How did he do that? The Rubik's cube part, I mean.

Most illusions take place behind some curtain or in a box or under cover of some kind, but DAMN! That happened right there! That was truly impressive and I've been into magic my entire life! That's the thing about Doug Henning. Very simple, very open illusions. Not so much about him looking cool, but more about the magic.

So, back to the question: How does he do it?

  • too bad you can see Doug lower the cup into his lap and put the onion in it.

  • I know how he did. But it's awesome :)

  • he has such a strange voice

  • forget the voice he looks like E.T.

  • Chris angel is fake.

  • Doug Henning is my hero!

  • Note that Doug Henning states there are no camera tricks ... because there aren't. Criss Angel cannot say the same thing. While he does do some excellent effects using "legitimate" techniques, much of his most impressive work relies on camera trickery, and is on a par with the magic once seen on I Dream of Jeannie.

Henning played a huge role in the magic history. Angel is an interesting figure in magic's present, but he's the residue of Blaine, and isn't strong enough to have lasting impact.

  • Yeah I agree Criss Angel is nothing compared to a past master like this.

  • Criss Angel will never be as good or as world renowned as Doug Henning. Doug was also a true gentlemen, that is another thing Criss will never be.

  • While Criss Angel may be an "artist", he will never compare with the likes of a Doug Henning or a David Copperfield. Criss Angel has found his niche, but he is far from the performer these people were & are. This is just my opinion.

  • @irican01 Criss Angel isn't even a real magician; he just plays one on TV. He has even admitted in interviews that he's not very good at anything but marketing. So that's from the "artist" himself.

  • @irican01

its not your opinion... its fact

  • @irican01 - it is because you are an idiot. let me explain.

all throughout the ages, whenever people didnt like what was happening in the current time, they would refer to the past, in the sense of it being better.

    Wich obviousley is idiot.

    therefore, you are an idiot.

  • @pklukepk - Exactly what am I an idiot for?

  • obviously you have no idea what he really does in this trick.

  • The internet is the worst thing to ever happen to the art of magic, you can watch tricks over and over and see how they are done!

  • its not fair to compare criss angel with DH, he is much superior than criss angel...........

  • I agree Criss Angel will never ever be as good as Doug Henning or even be as big a name. Sure some know who C.A. is bu t not as many as knew who Doug H. was or still remember him. Also Doug was a great person. C.A. is anything but a great person.

  • haha the feet thing was wicked

  • so ovbious! :) i love doug henning!

  • Wonderful showmanship!

  • Doug Henning is the Criss angel of the 70's. LOL

  • Doug Henning was a Real Magician, Criss Angel is a TV Magician.

  • what about cyril.

  • Cyril is also a great Magician, im his fan.

  • Greatest Magician ever. I LOVE DOUG HENNING!
