The Muppet Show episode with Doug Henning brought me here, and I am still amazed by every single one of his tricks! o_O Wish I could have been a kid back then, sitting in front of a remote-less color TV, watching this live (was it live?).
u know people talking about criss angels special effects and stuff go see him live and then watch him ohh yea u forgot about mac king by the way hes like another doug in my opinion
Doug Hennings created everything Criss Angel does or has done. If it weren't for Copperfield, Burton, Henning, Ammar. Angel wouldn't be anything. I will say this on Angel's behalf. It isn't all camera tricks. I've read his biography, and have since discovered he is an honest person.
@coolpearlz, angel may rule, but thats not because he has talent:( there is SO much more merit in what close ups and sleight of hand artist do than the big illusions of criss angel. don't let his success make you think otherwise
Doug Henning was such an upbeat and really nice person this really was evident in his performances. He had such a peaceful energy with such enthusiasm. A fond memory for so many growing up in the late 70 early 80s Check out the Magic Show on Broadway its on DVD a true work of art from one of magics masters
The thing about Doug was, his love for performing. He wasn't the best, but then again who is? I have met many during my 40 years of performing. Blackstone jr, Copperfield before he made it big and many others. The thing Doug brought to magic was the fun. Yes today most are making thier names exposing all the secrets that many of us kept tight within, and are really ruining the fun of magic.
Doug did perform lots of illusions before David Copperfield did. At first Copperfield saw Doug perform. Doug was not the best performer because he was no pop star like David Copperfield. No matter if music or magic, "good looking", "great clothes", "vip dinners", and so far, are today much more important for the audience like in former times.
What sweetness and charm. Doug really did bring joy to his performances. This is Larry Jennings' chop cup routine; Larry was 180 degrees from Doug in life, but loved magic as much (if not more than Doug). Amazing that our little craft could bring together such different men.
@hairmagic I completely understand being a big fan of Doug Henning, but why slam Criss Angel, who constantly pays homage and promotes the life of Doug Henning? They are both incredibly talented performers, that's why there's so few who reach their status.
@hairmagic i agree with what u said but the comment about criss angel is kinda lame, he does use stooges from time to time, not all the time, and he does not use digital effect or cuts, just angles but besides that i agree
@blacktig34 As a professional magician/designer,and consultant for 30 years, I can assure you that cuts and digital effects are indeed used. Stooges are used in gross excess. Angel seems to be of the opinion that entertainment value, regardless of means, is more important than performance integrity. I work with the top pros around the world, and the general consensus among them concerning Angel's type of entertainment is that it is NOT in the best interest of the art.
@hairmagic Doug was a pioneer, but Copperfield's presentation and performance is as near to perfection as possible. From his quickness to even the music he uses,it is all thought and worked on to the max.
@rounick i agree. Copperfield is without question, the greatest illusionist of our time. Most of his performances are flawless, although I did see one show that was a wreck a few years ago. We have have off nights. Copperfield makes magic fun and like Henning before him, he puts the magic back into the art.
@pklukepk For you to make a comment like that demonstrates your youthful ignorance. You're just beginning to grow hair on your nuts and you think you know everything. Henning, Copperfield, and the old masters of the art never used video or editing trickery. What you saw was what you got. They depended on their skill and mastery of the art to pull off their miracles, not video trickery. They were concerned with and preserved the integrity of the art. That is what Angel and Blaine don't do.
@hairmagic - its funny for you to call me ignorant, when you comment about my age without actually knowing it (ignorance) furthermore you assume I think I know everything (ignorance) plus you assume that video trickery, is different from trickery in general (ignorance) and you assume , im taking Criss as a example, uses video trickery "all the time" (ignorance) - you are not even worthy of a discussion with me "old man"
Jeeesus! That was impressive! How did he do that? The Rubik's cube part, I mean.
Most illusions take place behind some curtain or in a box or under cover of some kind, but DAMN! That happened right there! That was truly impressive and I've been into magic my entire life! That's the thing about Doug Henning. Very simple, very open illusions. Not so much about him looking cool, but more about the magic.
Note that Doug Henning states there are no camera tricks ... because there aren't. Criss Angel cannot say the same thing. While he does do some excellent effects using "legitimate" techniques, much of his most impressive work relies on camera trickery, and is on a par with the magic once seen on I Dream of Jeannie.
Henning played a huge role in the magic history. Angel is an interesting figure in magic's present, but he's the residue of Blaine, and isn't strong enough to have lasting impact.
While Criss Angel may be an "artist", he will never compare with the likes of a Doug Henning or a David Copperfield. Criss Angel has found his niche, but he is far from the performer these people were & are. This is just my opinion.
@irican01 Criss Angel isn't even a real magician; he just plays one on TV. He has even admitted in interviews that he's not very good at anything but marketing. So that's from the "artist" himself.
@irican01 - it is because you are an idiot. let me explain.
all throughout the ages, whenever people didnt like what was happening in the current time, they would refer to the past, in the sense of it being better.
I agree Criss Angel will never ever be as good as Doug Henning or even be as big a name. Sure some know who C.A. is bu t not as many as knew who Doug H. was or still remember him. Also Doug was a great person. C.A. is anything but a great person.
How I regret not growing up in the late 70s.

Doug breathed new life back into magic. Before Copperfield, before Burton, before Angel, there was Doug Henning.
Copperfield has that same inner spark that Henning had. Lance Burton brings a charm and dignity to the art.
Angel brings camera tricks and digital effects.
Gone are the days of magical honor and respect for the art. Today, the internet is full of bad amateurs revealing magic's secrets.
Doug was a friend, a gentleman, and mentor. I miss him. The art needs another Doug Henning.
