GREAT PERFORMANCE!!! Thank you my dear friend for sharing this Wonderful performance of Great Russian Lyric-Coloratura Soprano ANTONINA NEZHDANOVA (1873-1950).
In his book "The Grand Tradition", John Steane grouped Boronat and Nezhdanova together for appraisal and comparison. I agree with Steane's viewpoint that Nezhdanova sounds more readily enjoyable on pre-electrical records. She has everything - (as Steane describes) a young and fresh voice, an admirable, often dazzling technique as well as heart and intelligence. It's wonderful to revisit her. Many thanks again for this and your other postings featuring her.
Always a pleasure. I just put another one up today, actually. Nezhdanova and Sobinov, who went together so well, in the Love Duet from the Pearl Fishers. She is revered in Russia. She was a super-patriot during the Soviet days, a dedicated Communist, and would often go out into the provinces and sing for food or anything they offered. She was made People's Artist and Hero of Labor, two mighty titles in the Soviet Union at that time. In Ukraine they feel the same way about Salomea Krusceniski.
I will listen to a great performance such as this and get more aesthetic and dramatic meaning than the "Vanilla" interpretations which are done today. If this is crude _ I love crude.
Thank you for posting. Please post more of this great artrist.

PS : Any Schumann- Heinke recording is a lesson in great singing.
Oh, yes...I think it sometimes was, don't you? Things like unsupported top notes, big scoops between registers, and so forth. I'll tell you what...check out the "O Pretres de Baal" that I posted today, by Schumann-Heink, and see if you agree about the unsupported top, to take one example.
Thank you so much for the comment. Yes, this is a voice made for Gilda, isn't it? That light, soaring quality is very youthful. Curiously, her recording of
Elsa's Dream also reveals the same youthful charm , but in a Wagnerian setting where it is rare. I am intrigued by the fact that lighter voices can seem at times perfect for Wagner's lyric moments. Sadly, we never get to hear them, thanks to monster orchestras going full tilt.
Merveilleux !!!
Toujours Merci Edmund ... :-)

@SuperLuckydream Yes, she was wonderful. She has to be one of Russia's greatest sopranos ever.
