Mr Wilson, how do you feel now that Steve Jobs is dead!? you fuck!, fuck you all fuck you, fuck you all , fuck you, i don't care, i don't care, , , anymore (8).....
@HeatSpecific Well, its hard to identify in the video, but it was a shotgun, pump action, but im afraid thats all i can tell by looking from this angle. Looks like a remington to me, but then again, i could be wrong.
it doesnt matter how lossless you make his music, steven wilson is still very boring. listen to thelonious monk if you want innovation and incredible music. listen to steven wilson if you want gay political messages, whiny vocals and oh-so-progressive music that is a carbon copy of the 70s prog rock scene
what about destroying cassette walkmans? imagine listening to the quality of a vinyl to cassette tape recording in the 1980s. people could fast forward, and rewind. the sacrilege!
And that is totally ok. Also in Stevens opinion. I don't want to write an hour long answer, but Steven hates the shuffle/iPod generation, who really don't listen to albums, but only to the radio-friendly hits. He likes the idea of an album as an concept. Also there is the problem with compressed music. It just isn't the same to listen to music in your earphones than on a good cd player.
I myself have an iPod too, for when I am not near my cd player, and that is totally okay.
i love how theres a ton of videos of him smashing ipods...i have one but still buy albums to the bands i love...i see it as respect. Plus i still love cds anyways.
I disagree about this. I mean , okay basically he hates our generation (I myself don't like it much) but come one , he wouldn't have so much fans around the world without the internet.
it's not that... He just hates that people listen to 128kbps or VBR lossy mp3 on their iPods and don't really care about the real work and production there is when making a CD. Like Insurgentes in 5.1 or Dark Side of the Moon in quadrophony. you just *can't* have that on some iPod. That's what he is symbolizing by destroying the iPods =) He loves the internet generation, but in a different way. If you bought his album you would understand his point (it has a small bit of the documentary)
@666GuitarMania666 "If you bought his album you would understand his point " <-- ... you know, knowing how he uses facebook, soundcloud and his website to promote things.... that was what I meant lol. He doesn't have any problem with the internet nor the people in general :\ look at what IYAMNI said around these comments lol
No. He doesn;'t hate your generation. He is worried about the future of 'reality'. And it's not just your generation (Google 'couple lets baby starve while caring for avatar child' ) but yours will be the first to grow up completely enmeshed in virtual culture. I live in it and use it, but was raised in a time when there was no internet, cell phones, ipods etc... It's a wonderful advent. It's the future. But like all good things, there is a down side that must be addressed.
None of it is "crucial". We've existed for millennia without them. They' are tools and toys. But his point isn't that we should do away with them all, but rather that too many people are becoming dependent on them from an early age, letting their lives revolve around them, which can be detrimental.
So, everyone is missing the point here. I don't believe SW is against iPods or any sort of electronically delivered music. While he has said that he prefers not to download, he does have tracks for download on Burning Shed's store. This is more of a comment against how people are distracted by such things and do not bother to go out of their own cocoon to see things for themselves, since everything is right at their fingerttips on the internet. I'd like to say more but I'm at the char limit!
I've always wanted to check out Porcupine Tree but this makes me not want to. Maybe I'll download an album and listen to it with shuffle on my iPod. Yeah I'm going to do that.
Do the right thing and buy one of their records; don't lower yourself on having to download it for free just because you're a) too lazy to go to the store and pick it up, b) too cheap to not spend ~$10-15 on beautiful and quality music and c) too stupid to listen to it only in your ipod, instead of enjoying the quality of the sound put on these records with a decent music player!
b) You can listen to music on the pc as well you know, there is a reason I bought expensive speakers
c) I just spent £165 ($270) on 21 CD's from Amazon so don't tell me I'm cheap and lazy
d) Maybe I like to download music to try it first in good quality without having to blind buy.
Besides, do you really think I want to buy anything affiliated with Steve Wilson if he's just going to waste my money buying ipods and destroying them?
Blind buying is like opening presents on Christmas morning! Sometimes you get something you don't like, sometimes you get something you absolutely love! Or were you the kid who peeked at their presents the night before?
PS - That'd be a lame reason to overlook a genius musician.
Why can't people understand it's not about mindless destruction but about how the download of single tracks is destroying our music industry. Not because the artusts aren't gettin their money but due to the artists spending time to link songs from o e to another with the albums having a meaning. Just listening to one song losses that meaning totally. Lock at nickelback by rockstar. Everybody loved it n diwnloaded it but never gave the band a chance with any other song that album
i haven't really listen porcupine THAT well, but they're awsome (as far as i can say), and right now i'm downloading "insurgentes"... let's just say that without this kind of technology (internet, mp3 players, etc) a lot of people (like me) would never heard of PT or Steve Wilson... for me, this is absolutly lame...
Wow, Wilson sure is getting a lot of shit for this. I find it humorous really xD
And you can't be certain how much control he has over his music being on itunes. He doesn't quite have the status like "Prince" to get virtually every single musical clip of his stripped off the internet ;P
Still a damn good musician in his own right and Insurgentes is a great album. Looking forward to the next PT release later this year.
I love PT etc but this is crass... why not say you thought about doing it and then give the money you would have spent to some charity? Wanton destruction is completely unjustified and I can't believe he's done this. Publicity stunt? Then you are no better than those you despise and revile. I love my tech and however much it frustrates me at times I would never smash any of them - YT is overloaded with this kid of twattish behaviour and I wonder who is worse them or those who watch.
It's not that it's via an iPod so much as that people aren't getting full albums like they used to and aren't listening to them as a whole, but just as individual songs. He's stated that this doesn't really give you the intended message from the music and doesn't allow you to properly appreciate music culture.
What is funny is that when rich kids make this kind of videos, everybody starts whining like "wow, get a life" but when this guy does it it's suddenly awesome.
'Cause unless the rich kid has a message and reason behind shooting a rather expensive iPod, then he really DOES need to get a life. Steven Wilson isn't just like, "lol, imma shoot an iPod and then show off my Zune." Steven Wilson is very opinionated about the status of the music industry.
I agree wholeheartedly. I understand his point and all, but I buy lots of CDs and have an iPod for the trips into work. And I often listen through entire albums, even on my iPod.
Before casting thoughts on the act, get the reason of why he is doing it. But ina way, I think he is mad at the nitpicking culture, and the freedom of iTunes, rather than the iPod itself.
On the other hand, iTunes was supposed tobe a response to those who download from LimeWire and get a few songs off his albums everyday anyway.
I do too. Downloading music is like cake without frosting. It takes half of the experience away. However, Ipods aren't necessarily bad if your an "on-the-go person". Nobody can carry all their cd's with them. But then again, you can't exactly shoot downloadable music. Haha
