The idea that "true guilt is fear of punishment" suggests a rather petty, simplistic view of humanity. Guilt is the exact opposite of that; guilt is the knowledge that no punishment could possibly assuage our regret. Not even forgiveness does that fully.

If God truly loved the world, he wouldn't have put a tree that condemns us to Hell in the Garden of Eden, with full knowledge that we were going to eat from it, and then sit on his duff for a good while to offer us a loophole.

Christians trust the bible to teach us about Heaven and Hell. The current focus of the criminal justice system on rehabilitation (a pretty thoroughly failed focus too) is irrelevant to what we think about eternal punishment--or eternal life in Jesus Christ.
Since criminal justice has turned its focus away from punishment and towards rehabilitation in the past few decades, I wonder why some Christians still believe in unending punishment for spiritual transgressions.
Thank god I'm and atheist. I can't imagine what it would be like to be afraid of my own thoughts. It is so stupid to think you can be punished for what you think in the privacy of your own mind.

This reminds me of the book of Job. And his conversation with Eliphaz. Both Job and the patient have not learned humility, which Job eventually learns from God (maybe Elihu helped). What friends of Job failed ( I think) to do is to be compassionate with Job. Instead they accused him of being guilty.

Lance - regardless of whether you see his anger as positive, I do think that the scene did portray liberal theology in a negative light, because the person who claims to be a chaplain but has no defined beliefs is shown to be completely worthless. Maybe one can argue that no one knows the answer, but she wasn't even bothering to ask the question.
I also think it's interesting that they chose this scene, because it gives me a completely different impression. I think it's a great scene, a really powerful scene, but I think it's because it captures the desperation of someone who's dying and their irrational need to find answers no matter whether they're right or not because of fear. I don't think his anger is portrayed in a positive light here, but Ray makes it out to be positive.
I feel truer guilt for things I will never be punished for *because* I know that I did wrong and there's no way to make it right, and I don't get justice. True guilt only comes to a person with true empathy, meaning they feel bad out of a genuine compassion for others that is not rooted in selfishness. A guilt that is based on fear of punishment is rooted in selfishness. Fear of punishment shows more concern for oneself than for those one has harmed. I know because I've felt both.
I thought the clip was concerning a controversial issue, not common sense on what words mean and a bible sermon. :/ No offense to those who follow the religion but it would be great is some... specification went on in the description to what this video was truly about.

If God truly loved the world, he wouldn't have put a tree that condemns us to Hell in the Garden of Eden, with full knowledge that we were going to eat from it, and then sit on his duff for a good while to offer us a loophole.
He'd also make certain that monsters like Hitler would be punished for their crimes, regardless of their repentence. A just God would make them pay for their horrors and not wash away their guilt in Heaven while the victims whose sins are pale and small burn in Hell.

This reminds me of the book of Job. And his conversation with Eliphaz. Both Job and the patient have not learned humility, which Job eventually learns from God (maybe Elihu helped). What friends of Job failed ( I think) to do is to be compassionate with Job. Instead they accused him of being guilty.
I suspect Ray doesn't understand God no more than anyone else. These questions ought to be addressed with humility and answers treated with caution.

Hell is sooooo damn immoral. I really wonder if any person who loves and cherishes the idea that god created a place of eternal torture for ANY wrong has a true sense of what morality is. You know we would say if any judge gave the maximum sentence to any and every crime, he would be called corrupt and immoral. You compartmentize your beliefs when you think of god. If it can't be moral for men to behave this way, why is it moral for god? I don't want to be "god-like". compassion is better.

Lance - regardless of whether you see his anger as positive, I do think that the scene did portray liberal theology in a negative light, because the person who claims to be a chaplain but has no defined beliefs is shown to be completely worthless. Maybe one can argue that no one knows the answer, but she wasn't even bothering to ask the question.

I also think it's interesting that they chose this scene, because it gives me a completely different impression. I think it's a great scene, a really powerful scene, but I think it's because it captures the desperation of someone who's dying and their irrational need to find answers no matter whether they're right or not because of fear. I don't think his anger is portrayed in a positive light here, but Ray makes it out to be positive.

I feel truer guilt for things I will never be punished for *because* I know that I did wrong and there's no way to make it right, and I don't get justice. True guilt only comes to a person with true empathy, meaning they feel bad out of a genuine compassion for others that is not rooted in selfishness. A guilt that is based on fear of punishment is rooted in selfishness. Fear of punishment shows more concern for oneself than for those one has harmed. I know because I've felt both.
