Well, next Sunday it's my turn to see the play. I will travel from Germany to England just to see ... nooo, not Ralph Fiennes ... David Burke! However, it will be worth the journey. I've never seen any of them life on the stage before, yet, I have never before watched a British play life on stage - I'm so excited!
Not exactly, panda606. As I said, I saw Mr Burke. And I did not only see him, I met him - prior to the play. I told him about my present situation (my little daughter is living with foster parents at the moment because I'm ill) and he was kind enough to warn me about the play: a little child taken away from it's mother. I couldn't stand it. It was too overwhelming a feeling for me. In the end, I didn't watch the complete play; however, I did enjoy the stay and the meeting.
Everyone with insufficient funds - I am a student, too, and I simply came early on the day of the performance and got STANDING tickets for 5 quid. It's easy enough to stand there, it didn't bother me for a minute during the performance. Go for it! It's an amazing play!
I'm heartbroken that I wasn't able to get tickets for this... Fiennes' voice really catches the atmosphere of the play (which a classroom certainly doesn't!)... Kicking myself that my Uni fund isn't able to handle the £300 it costs to get two tickets on ebay! (I'll keep dreaming that Fiennes'll do Oedipus again one day ?_? )
I went to see the play last Friday and it was brilliant, a perfect cast, Fiennes is great as Oedipus and it was a very moving performance! Thanks to everybody involved at the National Theatre for another unforgettable experience.
check out my History of Theatre videos at Professor NotOne! video 2 talks about Oedipus!
