  • die harder was my favorite

  • I loved that game when I was a kid in my PlayStation 1, which looks the best version in this video.

  • I ALWAYS FELT THE...

transparent/see through wall effect in DH1 was an awesome little innovation. I didn't realise that effect had been a bit crippled on the Saturn Version though.

It's pretty obvious for all to see that the PS1 version looks superior. I can't comment on the frame rate personally, but it looks as though the Saturn version plays just fine to me. I could be wrong though, having never physically played the Saturn release...

  • I think the best version is psx

I saw that there was more luxurious effects which make the PSX version more better because the 3D textures on PSX looked a bit more detailed and the PSX relied on the 3D effects for the HUD on the first episode. And the draw distance was more further ranged. Visually and gameplay wise the PSX wins this port battle.

  • I'd still play the Saturn version if the framerate wasn't shit! I love the Saturn controller so much though (all 3 of the controllers actually).

  • reason, sony had the money, sega did not, maybe to the fiasco of add on after non suported add on, who had the cash to buy a sega cd, megadrive and a 32x to play the non exsistent games

  • The saturn port of this looks like it had very little effort put into it.

  • i agree that most people say a big reason that the ps1 managed to eclipse the saturn in japan was one little game called final fantasy 7

  • @tinkerthecat FFVII is sooo over rated. I could list at least 10 other jrpg's i'd rather play.

  • @therealbluedragon agreed but final fantasy 7 sold the most. I know it's ridiculous but even in japan final fantasy 7 sold over 10x more than grandia for saturn which is a much better game.

  • @tinkerthecat Well, here in Italy at the time at least the 90% of people didn't even know that PlayStation isn't the only console, right now here if you say "videogame" the first thing that people think is "PlayStation" and most of us didn't even know the existance of Saturn and Dreamcast, but almost everybody remember the MegaDrive LoL

  • This is one of those times when you just have to admit: everybody loses. The game looks awful on both consoles. Look at that draw distance!

I am not mistaken this is one of those games on the Saturn that uses only one cpu instead of two (like Alien Trilogy).

  • Imma huge Saturn fan boi but I came to the simple conclusion that 90% of the ported 3rd parties gamer were inferior to there PSX counterparts.

  • The game was obviously developed for the PS1 and then ported to the Saturn. Looks like a rather sloppy port too. The Saturn was just way more difficult to program on and as usual developers aren't gonna take the time to refine the port due to time and laziness. The Saturn was inferior to the PS1 in many ways, but this port could have been much better. The graphics even back then were mediocre for even the PS1. Fantastic game though. I have the PS1 version.

  • @OldsXCool Not to forget that there were a lot more Playstation customers out there than Saturn ones. It wouldn't have made sense to spend too much time perfecting the Saturn port when they could be making the next Playstation game. This was still ace on Saturn though, and the music is awesome! + one thing most Playstation owners didn't have was a decent light gun!

  • @nicholasthetaylor That's very true about the light gun. I have the light gun PS and it's not great. However for some reason playing this game without one is really fun too. I tried playing Virtua Cop without one and I hated it. It's too fast paced for a controller. I still like the PS version overall.

  • @OldsXCool Its easy to see why. You have smoother and better looking graphics with more effects. The Playstation version is THE version to have. I had no idea the Saturn was inferior when I bought one. I played Nights, and saw that a 3D Sonic would come out (yeah, as a mini game in a megadrive compilation - doh!), and so I actually (gulp) sold my playstation (at a loss I might add) in order to get a Saturn. When Wipeout 2097 came out for the Saturn I rushed out and bought it, and almost wept XD

  • @nicholasthetaylor Man I'm sorry to hear that. When the PS was released I was an instant fan. My older brother had a Saturn and swore it was better and that PS was just eye candy. As it turned out the Saturn died an early death because it just couldn't keep up with PS and even 64.

I do have a Saturn now and some of my favorite games, but my PS library is over 60 titles and my Saturn library is just over 10. Sorry to hear about Wipeout. Wipeout XL rocked on the PS.

  • @OldsXCool Yeah, tell me about it. Wipeout XL (2097 over here) was the reason I got a Playstation, that and Ridge Racer, Doom, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy 7, and god, when Soul Blade came out I was a happy lad. But what was I to know? Playstation was all I knew. I just assumed that Sega wouldn't be crap. The thing is, only two things were wrong with the Saturn; 3D graphics, and FMV decoding. The controllers were good, the unit looked good, the packaging was good. Just under the hood it fell short

  • Sometimes, being a Saturn owner is tough.

  • The ps version seems to have shadows for the characters. Always a nice touch.

  • Saturn's inability to display transparencies is exposed in DHT.

  • @Majki182 Its a shame, because if you look at nights, they atleast manage to get alpha on scaleable sprites. THAT would have atleast been something. Fighting Viper used hires to do a nice trick transparency, tho I imagine it would have slowed it well, by about 4x. I really dislike the chequering effect. Who's idea was that? I would have thought flashing on and off quickly, or showing every other line would be better. It wasn't fooling anyone. It just drew attention to the Saturn being a bit shi*

  • i thought this game was good fun too play and each of the sections was ok but nothing outstanding. i owned the saturn version which as your vid shows was a bit dodgy in the graphics department. i love these battles of the consoles.

  • The Saturn port suffers the same issues that most of the multi-platform ports back then had, such as an unstable framerate &/or a general lack of detail compared the PS1 version.

Control wise it's identical though so it's good to know that whatever problems this port has are only cosmetic rather than mechanic which unfortunately they usually are.
