Otherwise it has been a great car. Even at a cold -40. Extremely reliable and good gas mileage.
For a small car I'm surprised how well it rides and surprised that it has more options than a lot of small cars. Besides the usual, it has power mirrors, power seats, adjustable lumbar support, reminders to change the oil, low tire pressure warning, etc.
@DeadAtrocity With mine it happened to be a coil tower and I am told it is a common problem with Alero's. That car died in a flood, but I now have a 2004 Alero and not had a single problem with it yet.
It actually turned out that the problem was the coil tower had fried itself. Quick replacement and about 500 bucks later and the car was running again.
@ssrc30 Hmm sounds like a common problem for aleros... Mine had the exact same thing... Only I was in exams and didnt have time to fix it myself and that made it VERY expensive, and it wrecked my cat, adding to the cost...
@jaretkady Ya, these cars are thought to be the reason that Oldsmobile actually went outta business eh. The Alero is a junk car. Most recently my dash lights are going on while I drive and they wont go off. The car also feels like its jerking when you go to accelerate from a stop. I've had this Alero for almost 2 years now and it's been in the shop more times than I care to admit and cost me over $5700 bucks in parts alone. Can't wait to get a new car soon here lol...
@ssrc30 Ya, although I loved my Alero it broke down WAY too often, then I moved onto Hyundai, Haven't had a SINGLE problem with that car, I would recommend a switch...
500,000 KM's. not exactly sure what that translates to in miles. The car belonged to a businessman who made ALOT of trips across the country with it, hence the reason for such high mileage lol...
I actually had it diagnosed as needing a fuel filter and a injector flush. I was starting to wonder about the head gasket thing as well. Too bad they don't make cars the way they use to where you could just take it apart and fix it yourself eh, woulda saved me a whole lot of trouble.
When I got my Alero it had 50,000 miles on it.
Affer 3 years, it now it has 95,000.
I had a small issue (belt pulley) once.

I have the exact same problem with my Alero. Did you ever happen to figure out what the problem was?

Get a compression tester. Sound like a few cylinders are not fireing sometime you get lucky and it could be just a badf plug wire or plug .

It sounds like your head gasket might be blown.
