does the performance gain by changing the dx level work for all games? or only steam games? thx a bunch

Works for all of them. Sometimes games let you chose shader model instead of dx, the lower it is, the faster but uglier.

ummm, my other computer has a NVidia GEforce 7300 Le in it and it gets about 30 fps on everything max settings... something is wrong with ur computer

i have a similar system, 3100 amd 2.2ghz, 1 gb ram, and a 9600xt but i have everything on low and my performance is wayyy lower. i defrag my hardrive and everything. do you have any tips for running it better? any .ini tweaks or anything in the console? please let me know

Right click on the team fortress 2 shortcut, select properties, in the "target" box type -dxlevel 81 after the writing, should look something like this: "F:\Program Files\TF2\TeamFortress2.exe" -dxlevel 81 , then check if in the video settings it shows directx 8.1 instead of directx 9.0.

It won't look all shiny anymore but the performance gain is worth the visual loss.

By the way my Sapphire Radeon 9600XT 128MB card is also overclocked to 580/335 (Original is 500/324)

Nice done, its a pity fraps drains some serious harddisk performance, i bought a 2nd harddisk for fraps only now it works very well.
