What they are doing is called nuno felting (laminate felt) You use wool and a cotton gauze or silk chiffon. You soak it with soapy water and roll it about 150 times (300 for scarves) It looks great when done! Throwning the felted fiber is called fulling the fiber. P.S. The hand carders they're using are arounf $60-$70. Great vid, thank you for taking the time to show us nuno felting! :)
We could see they were trying to make felt. But they end their video in mid stream. They were still throwing it in the bath tub. It would have been helpful if they had bothered to show the finish of the piece.
Maybe the film would have made more sence if I could understand Japanese - however, I much doubt it. I pretty much sat there for 8 minutes wondering, what they are making - had to see the end of it.....what is the next step in the operation? Will the patient survive?? Ooooooh no - no result!!!
I understand only rudimentary Japanese. Basically, I understood when he asked if the sponge were hot. I understood her asking if some verb was OK. Still, I understood the process.
Gosh, not my style of carding- very poor technique you card the wool- not the carding needles- like carding air.=. Also, ou do not have to first separate the roving out, just pull it over the carder. I think they were ripping the poor wool up! Best part was the laying of the wisps. They rolled the bubble pack up too soon. I Was that a piece of silk? Why didn't they show changing all different directions before tossing? Final result????
