Actually the Talmudic literature states that the standard skin type of Israelites is "dark" skin! The Talmud states that 3 were struck on the ark - the dog, the (raven?) and Ham. Then it states how each were struck. Regarding Ham, if my memory serves me correctly, it ONLY states that he was struck in his skin. It doesn't say explicitly HOW - nor does the Talmud require that you agree with this opinion. It is not a practical law. Only the laws are binding.

They do have their reasons for being super careful in who they convert, and for being paranoid... due to many negative occurrences which have happened in the past and certain negative results which are still common - HOWEVER, *if* our leaders were doing things correctly; IF they (majority) were teaching in the proper manner; IF we were keeping Torah in the proper manner, then the degree of negative results would greatly decrease, and HaShem will bless us according to His Word.
