No, vocoders just produce a sound depending on how you position and shape your mouth. Basically, all you need to do is mime the words and it does the rest. Its pretty nifty.

Thats not true! For a vocoder to work you have to play the notes you want the vocals to be in on either a keyboard, synth or guitar or what ever, and mouth the words and it comes out in that note.
