This scene is very similar to that descibed the book; However the only difference is that Ralph asks her: "Do you want to make love with me, Mary?" and she, after eyeing his....says "I don't want to put yourself in such trouble". Then she leaves saying: "You're not a real man, shame shame"
This is THE scene of the whole movie... Wonders who would be the actors of a remaking now... and how they will do the scene... I'd add a tighter hug and a kiss...
FRom what I remember, Ralph was not yet a cardinal in this scene from the book... He became cardinal long after she died, right? But alas, this scene is hotter in the movie, because in the book, it was quite sordid. Ralph kept refering to her as an old poisonous spider. Ah, thornbirds... has enough heartbreaks to last ten lifetimes.
"That old woman" was actually a pretty well known actress named Barbara Stanwyck; She was the mother on the 60's western "The Big Valley" which also starred Lee Majors. She'd been acting in movies and on tv for DECADES by the time she had this role.
This scene was sooooo intense, and emotional.Barbara Stanwick was and is one of my all time fav actresses, and she played Mary Carson just splendidly!!! She showed how bitter and jealous she was of Father D'Bricassart's relationship with Meggie so perfectly, and believable,it was just fascinating to watch.Brilliant performances by both Richard and Barbara,as well as Rachel Ward.I hope they do a remake of this movie,I think Christian Bale would be perfect as Father Ralph. I can only wish.
Richard Chamberlain shares a cute story about filming this scene in his book "Shattered Love."
Apparently, shooting this scene, Barbara flubbed her lines, something she NEVER did....everyone on the set was surprised, since she was always so "unflappable." Her explanation?
"Well, it's been a VERY long time since I've stood next to a naked man."
I guess Richard really was totally "au natural" for the scene, but it didn't seem to faze him, just her...completely understandable, yes? : )
One of the hottest scenes ever filmed, and it's between an elderly woman and a gay man! Amazing acting all the way around. Actually, wasn't Stanwyck bisexual? Who cares? GREAT SCENE!
@binkle1 They say that Barbara Stanwyck was a Lesbian who was part of a "Secret Society" in the 1940's & 1950's known as "The Sewing Circle". Also, they went and "Outed" a B Movie Actress named Lizbeth Scott who sued Confidential, a Legendary Tabloid but she lost because the Article was written in LA. and she worked in New York.
@MrTraherne I stand corrected. I only went by what I read about. Her Sexuality was none of my Business. For what it's worth, Richard Chamberlin was fantastic in this Mini-Series. I will say one thing, wasn't Mary Carson some frightening when she first laid eyes on Meggie.
@laminage In fact, it just occurred to me that one of Lizbeth Scott's first important films was The Strange Love of Martha Ivers in which she worked with... Barbara Stanwyck. She's probably best remembered for Dead Reckoning with Humphrey Bogart, though.
Incredibly erotic scene. You have to be a great actress to pull this off at an advanced age. Some actresses can just be whatever they want to be in a moment. Stanwyck was the Blanchett of her day, no question.
I stopped watching it. First my religious studies teacher told me about it- to learn and stuff but then I stopped watching it because of all the shit I've written below
But, I've decided now that I'm going to watch "Priest" with Linus Roache and Robert Carlyle. People may say I'm weird by my watching a gay priest rather than a rather old priest technically having sex with his daughter, but hey I have weird taste. I've also realised this comment is sarcastic but It wasn't meant to.
I honestly don't know why, but something about father ralph's eyes creep me out, and mary carson is obsessing a bit over him. Oh I don't know I can't explain it.
I watched the clip again a couple of times and I see what you mean about Fr Ralph's eyes. Maybe it's the way the scene was shot with the camera angle and lighting? However I still love the way Mary kneads his flesh. There was lots of life in the old girl yet! And Richard Chamberlain in his prime was quite a specimen which gives a great deal of credibility to the scene.
OMG, I totally know what you mean! This scene has always given me the creeps. The way he looks at her.... the way she touches him and clasps her hands around his neck... when she knows he's a priest... it gives me shivers.
What's so "yuk" and "nasty"? The scene has to do with longing and desire, and forbidden love. Yes, he's a (very ambitious) priest, and yes, she's a old woman but I think there's still something impressive (and somewhat sad) about the way she confronts him. Mary Carson is obsessed with Fr Ralph and she's got his number! I'm curious, would you respond the same way if it were a scene with some old goat drooling after a beautiful young nun?
First of all I didn't mean to cause this stir, and make such fuss. Sorry about that.
You asked if I'd feel the same way with "an old goat lusting after a beautiful young nun" to tell you the truth, I don't think I would. I've never seen an old woman perving on a priest through a window before. Sorry I just can't explain it. I also feel creeped out when Meggie and father ralph kiss. It's just something about the programme I can't explain. Forgive me.
Ego te absolvo (just kidding). You haven't caused a stir or made a fuss, and are certainly entitled to your feelings. I've enjoyed our exchanges -- far more civil than a lot of the comments people make on YouTube. One final thought: I find the relationship between Fr Ralph & Meggie far more disturbing than Mary Carson's failed attempts to put the make on him. They remind me of Woody Allen and his stepdaughter as Ralph helped raise Megan and was her mentor. Keep on enjoying The Thorn Birds!
think the lighting & camera angle re-inforce Mary Carson's words when she's says how he views mortals with contempt for admiring his beauty. Ralph's probably not too happy at being cornered like that, the light angle capture's that contempt & anger. think in the book he's livid while she manhandles him..
hahahahaha...Stanwyck is a superb actress especially in this scene....Her character in the thornbirds she played wonderfully...This scene...especially this scene made me feel disgusted but still she still played amzingly great!!!
Barbara Stanwyck was so wonderful in this production. What a truely great actress. I also found Richard Chamberlain irresistible!! Chamberlain is Father "what-a-waste" in The Thorn Birds.
barbara stanwyck never stopped having sex appeal. And, in this movie, she had lots of dramatic fun playing a woman who wanted to do what a good lot of us always wanted to do with a clergyman. Admit it, you know what I'm talking about!
Always thought this scene was funny (ironic funny not haha funny) because in real life, neither Barbara or Richard would be romantically interested in one another. They played it well.
Barbara Sanwyck is one of my favorite classic Hollywood actresses. Despite being very distinct she could play so much range. Fabulous actress. I am not familiar with her later in life work so thanks for posting this.
Thanks for posting this. I remember as soon as this scene was over I looked at my Mom and said "That just won Barbara Stanwyck an Emmy" and for once in my life I was right.
You were so right man. I wasn't familiar with her work except on The Big Valley & The Colbys but this scene represented something we all can identify with, loving someone that we couldn't have.
Stanwyck was bisexual. A diary of Robert Wagner revealed that Stanwyck had an affair with him when he was 25 and she was 45. She was the original cougar!
Barbara Stanwyck. Wow!! What an amazing lady.
