His voice is just sort of tinny/nasal, and he doesn't have a remarkable range or anything. He's no Bono/Vedder/Cornell or anything like that.

You're right. His voice isn't out of this world, but it suits the genre. Country music doesn't rely on a singer with ridiculous phrasing and skills like someone in R&B.
