  • i love this vid for all the subtle historical connections bridged between hip hop and other genres of music. for years, folks tried to discredit hip hop as less legitimate than rock 'n roll, gospel, r&b and jazz music ... genres invented by african americans (just sayin). truth is, any real hip hop music fan just like any ethnomusicologist who's studied american art will tell u hip hop pretty much follows the same patterns as the others. just the nx generation's form of expression. classic!

  • 2:26 GLORIA ETERNA

  • Nas and Common are the only rappers I know who had their dad in one of their songs, but I like how Nas's dad was actually doing what he had been doing for years.

  • Anyone know the original song? I know it's a blues song but I don't know the name of it.

  • @RomaZeal the sample for bridging the gap is manish boy by muddy waters

  • @londongurbet who da fuck is u!!!!!!! lol u dick eatin

  • anywhere to get this instrumental? diggin this blues vibe

  • love it !!

  • this is real music!! im feelin it!!!!!!

  • First of all, I love this song, but NaS showed no creative and artistic vision when he added or allowed women wearing lingerie while gyrating their hips to appear in this video. Women wearing little to nothing is fine in some rap videos, but in this song, all the gyrating women seem to do is trvialize the main concept about bridging the gap of rap music.. Also, at the end Nas's father pays respect to Ray Charles which is fine, but the main beat to this song was Mannish Boy by Muddy Waters.

  • @suicidalstan You act like they were doing stripper moves they are professional dancers not video hoes. There is nothing wrong with having them in the video.

  • @suicidalstan He paid respect to Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf as well at 3:24

  • @suicidalstan Are u deaf, trbute was paid, "Muddy Waters Howling Wolf you dont stop, from the Blues to HipHop u don't stop, tell em pop" u so quick to critisize you miss the whole point of the video, it's a lesson on music history, have u ever heard of the Cotton Club, the mecca of Swing, thats the skimpy attire the dancers wore back then

  • @shonha1 My bad, I stand corrected. By the way, I did say I love the song.

  • @suicidalstan - Purchase the Movie - " Cotton Club" or google Coton Club dancer

  • I love how he mentioned the blues. Blues is the shit! if it weren't for the blues rap wouldn't have been controversial.

  • COOL!

  • big track. defination of a good father.nas is the only rapper i c dats gt his father in his life.this song explain nas knowledge

  • @juiceydee09 actually others do as well. Not everybody's dad was a deadbeat.

  • this is his actual Dad???

  • @goodguynow correct

  • olu dara this the father of nas!!

  • how many rappers did a track ad single with his dad huh lmao

  • This is fuckin ill.. You can tell Nas enjoyed working with his Dad

  • You know the best part of this song/video is the display of a black man and THE FATHER THAT RAISED HIM. Beautiful.

  • @MrSeven18 I think the best part are the girls.

  • @MrSeven18 no. his father abandoned him when he was young....

  • haha nas is sick for doin this

  • all time greatest video... I grow up in mississippi ;) ..... Father and Son love

  • NavajoIsUnstoppable

Thank you very much, you are a great genius! x

  • I am English so give me a chance here. What do you call that rift. At the beginning of the song and through it, Dah dah dah dah. Southern blues I would call it, but when I look for it, typing allsorts in, I get nada. Help me find what it is. If I could listen to that for the rest of my life and nothing else ever, I would be a happy person.

  • @mrshenda mannish boy muddy waters

  • is dat really Nas' dad?

  • @controll27 yes u fucker..looool

  • for me was the other way around, i found out nas music is in "a prophet", and i watched it...i mean, you can't go wrong with nas music, leonardo di caprio knows this (blood diamonds, the departed)

  • CLASSIC VIDEO.

  • i'm in love with this song perfect collaboration

i heard it in the french movie "a prophet "

  • damn those girls are hot.

  • my fav type of music fucking class blues and fucking class true legend rap

  • Nas, the greatest :)

  • He really is one of the greatest men of our generation, and he's still very young with a lot more contributions to come.

  • rap became more valuable since it "died", fuck the shit on tv I'll keep reanimating the dead hip hop!!

  • Song is so funky, it'll even have white politicians dancing to the flow.

  • This is fooooking awesome :)

  • must suck to be Olu Dara's other son, he gets no shine ahahah

  • @614sFinestENT So mean, man so mean

  • @614sFinestENT i didnt even know nas had a brother....hahaha

  • tanisha scott's in this vid..i bet she choregraphed

  • french film "un prophete"!!

  • they dont make it like this anymore, he is the single mos important wrapper to bridge the gap from the roots of hip hop , rap has died a death since though...

  • this clip is ill

  • Rest in peace, Ray Charles XD

  • this is the real hip hop

  • ILL

  • actually they did sample muddy waters song "mannish boy"

  • - i LOVE this sonq .

  • This is one of my favorite Videos by Nas I loved the concept of the video the chreography, period clothing & of course the lyrics..Olu you rock!.: -)

  • was anyone know the original sample or loup??

  • @piskouan No samples were used, i guess...it just sounds similar to some Muddy Wates stuff

  • @uverdadeiro Thank you for your interest .. I will try to find what sound reminds me .. if i have any results .. will upload .. thanks

  • I go back and forth on whether or not conceptually this is Nas' gr8est ever video (Thief's Theme is my other fav).

  • Two Great Men, The old and the new

  • This is awesome, rapping with his Dad!

  • nas murdered ittttt

  • it's great how nas sang this song with his dad :D

  • for all interested, this song takes a lot of influence from muddy waters manish boy. i recommend you listen to it

  • So, uhhm, please tell me now that Nas isn't the best lyricist alive ?

  • @Cash69Moneh i ask this question everday..... people sayin lil wayne n jay z are better than nas

  • @StJamesOutlawz

People don't appreciate real music, or they are just dead shits and want to listen to the Lil Wayne and Gay-Z crap.

  • @ hes not the best lyricist!!

  • @Cash69Moneh Canibus.

  • Damn i give Nas props lettin his pops be in his video after pops left him.. Thas wussup he is only rapper that ever made a video with his pops, this a classic.. Nas classy and a true poet!!

  • LOVE THIS! I heard they got rid of VH1 Soul (they only place I would see this video) ..Dayum shame if it's true..*smh*

..I dig those girls dancing - kinda creepy, tho..lol

  • I love the mixture. and the dance routine is awesome. Nas is the man

  • BLUES + RAP = BIG BIG TRACK!

  • damn thats tight he did this wit his pops

  • this shit is classic

  • HAPPY FATHERS DAY!!!

  • Love this one. Plus it supports father-son relationships, which in the projects is sorely lacking due to fathers largely bailing out on their responsibilities.

  • Deadly Rap/Blues , - !

  • Beautiful

like the song & the Video

  • "I'm my own master."

  • Such a good song.. not really like this music but NAS makes it sweet.

  • what's the name of that small trompet at 1:07?

  • why does this not have more views

  • Love how the dancers are like a cross between '20s flappers and modern strippers.

  • I like this beat!

  • yea Nas show these lames how to do it!

  • I just love the costumes and choreography in this video! Hot!!!!

  • K, I'm still learing about ancient kemet, and I'm not familar with what that means at 2:12 , could someone school me plz? thnk u..

  • B.O un prophete Jacques Audiard

    emouvant,tendre et violent...comme la vie

  • Daweon song

  • This song was used in the French film Un Prophete; truly gave the movie an added dimension.

  • Just watched the movie, haven't heard this song in years. Great movie.

  • @Kanela6989 Most def, a fantastic film with a solid soundtrack to boot.

  • @Kanela6989

no, it did not. Good song but it hardly made Un Prophete....can you please explain?

  • @JurgenMacho I think Kenela was trying to say that the use of this song in A Prophet was to highlight the transition Malik was making from being a peon to a player in the prison. Malik was finally blossoming from a reclusive , nervous boy to a confident, intellectual man on the move.

  • @Kanela6989 That's where I found this song.

  • true say that acdc4200, dyou think he became one after he signed up with jay-z or was he before???

  • I think, he signed before hand. Keep in mind that anybody in the illumanti is in there inherently. You can only be in there if you have a certain blood line.

  • it funny cause his father never became a legend in jazz or what ever he does but nas became a hip hop legend and the best rapper alive with eminem

  • @XXL123ful Olu Dara never had intentions of being a legend, he never even wanted to record until Nas talked him into it. He just played music as a hobby.

  • the lyrics aren't totally right...

  • what a dad can offer better to his son thank nas u make me go everyday

  • Luv the historical themes here. Great song.

  • the bluessssssssssssssssssss

  • his first child was Nas? i thought Nas had an older brother. maybe i was mistaken.

    now back to the music.

  • it could be on his mothers side he had an older brother and on his dad's side he was the first one.

  • @DannyDannsg nah he has a younger brother though. he's part of the Queensbridge crew. He goes by Jungle
