I'm surprised that neither movie has really made it known that he has been in love with Emma since she was around 13. Mr. Knightley says it in the novel: "I could not think about you so much without doting on you, faults and all; & by dint of fancying so many errors, have been in love with you ever since you were thirteen at least." It's a good movie, just wish the characters were like the book more.
@BluSakura808 she does I was like is that her ??? But it's funny how she likes to hook up people and then she finally gets married at the end to her best friend
Romola Garai's portrayal of Emma is a little too "quirky," in comparison to Kate Beckinsale's. The latter I took as Emma from the very beginning but I am having hard time accepting Garai.
i think the only thing thats strange to me is the waving all over the place and i havent seen a single bow yet...but other than that its great :) cant blame actors for a directors decision to make them wave and not bow
Yeah I have to say, i like how Mr. Knightly is playful and more flirtatious than depicted in the earlier version however, he doesn't really suite the part. There isn't enough passion and brooding, anger. He doesn't seem as wise and critical of Emma as he should be.
@foxlilly5 But where is Mr Knightley's passion, brooding and anger in the novel?? Nowhere, it´s mostly dialog. Does he have to be angry to be wise or critical? He loves her, that much IS in the novel. He loves her with her faults. So I think this is an allowed interpretation that fits the novel quite well, plus, it is the most verbatim so far, and I love that.
Honestly, this is one of the worse adaptations of a Jane Austen novel that I have ever seen. Understandably, the script was changed as to attract more viewers, but it does not have any remanents of Austen's clever language at all which dulls every episode.
What disappoints me the most is that Mr. Knightley is so inarticulate.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I have to agree with you, pinkerpikachu. I'm only halfway through the first episode and feel like giving up.
The casting is just wrong. I watch this and feel little towards the characters, Emma especially who just comes across as petulant and spoiled. They've butchered the novel and have Americanized it!
Jane Austen's humour was so great because it was subtle and understated. We do not need the script writers to explain it to us like we are morons.
"I have never had any fault to find in Emma's person. She has always been the cleverest and prettiest of family. Emma has always been of special regard. I love to look at her"
My only beef with this version of Emma is that it's the only one to use incorrect English grammar regarding Harriet's parentage. Both Mrs Goddard and Mr Knightley (later on) say "she's the natural daughter of nobody knows who". It should be whom. Who is the nominative (subject) of the relative pronoun, whom is the accusative (object) and genitive (possessive). In this instance the possessive 'whom' should be used. It bugs me. I'm a grammar Nazi, I'm afraid, but in JA so should the directors be.
You are correct, she does say this, while Mr. Knightley says "the natural daughter of nobody knows who". It does not change the case of the relative pronoun, which is still connected to "of" regardless of the other words in between, still genitive, and thus should still be whom. JA used it correctly in the book, and the BBC should have as well.
so are you (correct), however bbc might have thought that it wasn't a big deal...so why don't we just go back to enjoying this adaptation of emma, and by the way thanks for the brief english grammar lesson...
@imasinnerimasaint Actually, I think "...Well, we don't really know who," is a separate sentence. The first is left unfinished, which would make the "who" in the second sentence a subject, right? I would no longer be connected by the "of." So then the use of "who" would be correct.
I think it depends on whether you think that was one long and rather fumbled sentence or two. My vote is on two.
@Sarandib22 Btw in case you don't know, accusative is the object, genitive is the possessive. The dog (nominative) chased the tail (accusative) of the cat (genitive). Or: The dog (nom.) chased the cat's (genitive) tail (accusative). Who knows the answer? Do you know whom knows the answer? It may not be in common usage these days, but for JA it should still be used.
And I must admit, after watching the entire series, that Blake actually did a wonderful job at being smug and petty and quite frankly, creepy, to my surprise.
Jonny Lee Miller also appeared in the 1983 version of Mansfield Park as Charles Price, when he was only 10 or 11 yrs old. Seems he was destined to keep appearing in Jane Austen films :)
Most of Mr. Knightley's conversation with Mrs Weston uses the language from the book. There are some bits that aren't exactly Austen, but I think they did a pretty good job throughout the movie.
i really dont like robert martin! dunno why! i like mr knightley he is just so kind, considerate and bickers with emma like a brother would do. cute love in my opinion. In episode 3 dont know if you saw it but he dances with harriet and makes her really happy and then dances such a romantic dance with emma. made my heart melt.
God, I love their sophisticated ways.
