  • God, I love their sophisticated ways.

  • I'm surprised that neither movie has really made it known that he has been in love with Emma since she was around 13. Mr. Knightley says it in the novel: "I could not think about you so much without doting on you, faults and all; & by dint of fancying so many errors, have been in love with you ever since you were thirteen at least." It's a good movie, just wish the characters were like the book more.

  • Mr Knightley: Because openly expressing that you love to look at a 16 years younger girl could mean nothing but the best of intentions!

  • I like Mr Knightly better- Mr Elton????

  • cute story:)

  • watch northhanger abbey for more Mr Elton

  • @TheInkybus *Mansfield Park

  • oh mr elton, damn.

  • I've read the book its good, and fyi never trust an adaptation to the book there never 100%

  • Except the 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice! :p Love it!

  • @cat4fab ... THANK YOU! You're saving me from reading the book (for school)... the episodes are sooooo much more interested then the book!! \^^/

  • Mr. Knightly: i LOVE to look at her -

    lmao

  • Oh my God Oh my God OH MY GOD JEFFERSON HALL. [e.g. Mr Martin.]

  • Romola is combination of Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz, i think.

  • @SuperMiserableGirl

I thought the exact same thing! but she's a beautiful actress all her own.

  • omq Mr. Elton, GET IN ME

  • @heylittleluna hahahahahahhaha, funniest youtube comment ever!

  • Mr Elton is HOT!

  • is it just me or does the guy who like harriet look like charles bingley?

  • "I *love* to look at her." LOL

  • love the way the knightly children feature so much!

  • Is it just me or this version of Emma is a bit like Drew Barrymore?

  • @BluSakura808 she does I was like is that her ??? But it's funny how she likes to hook up people and then she finally gets married at the end to her best friend

  • @jourdana96 thanks for the spoiler!!!

  • did i see mr.elton, a man, put a napkin on his lap???! LOL

  • i like this harriet better than the other one....the other one was too...old

  • all the little Knightly's... wait a minute?????

  • @kagfec her sister is married to john knightly...mr george knightly's brother so in this part she is talking about her niece and nephews.

  • Romola Garai's portrayal of Emma is a little too "quirky," in comparison to Kate Beckinsale's. The latter I took as Emma from the very beginning but I am having hard time accepting Garai.

  • I like Johnny Lee Miller better in this movie than Mansfield Park

  • Miss Taylor and Mr. Knightley have a little too much chemistry here.

  • @WinningisforLosers I see chemistry, but not romantic sparks, just two good actors bouncing off each other well.

  • i'm loving harriet smith!

  • damn that Mr Elton is HOT

  • emma ( romola ) reminds me of drew berrimor i dont like how they dont curtsie in this version...they just wave as if it is modern time

but i do like this version alot XDDD

    <33333

  • @chichimonkixpikachu yeah i like the curtsy better!

  • i think the only thing thats strange to me is the waving all over the place and i havent seen a single bow yet...but other than that its great :) cant blame actors for a directors decision to make them wave and not bow

  • "Another later from Jane..".who cares about her i agree with you Emma that woman won't shut up!

  • There's a right way and a wrong way to fill your spoon with soup!

  • i like this Harriett, she's cute.

  • The guy who plays Mr. Elliot is SO cute... he played Edward in Mansfield Fields the 2009 version.

    Soooooo cute!!!

  • @ShesFixingHerHair8 it was edmund!!!!

  • she's one of the first designers for the stars...

  • I like this though Mr. Knightly is a bit of a dork. LOL I can actually see that though in the novels.

  • I love the way Emma looks (up and down) at Mr. Martin :)

  • Yeah I have to say, i like how Mr. Knightly is playful and more flirtatious than depicted in the earlier version however, he doesn't really suite the part. There isn't enough passion and brooding, anger. He doesn't seem as wise and critical of Emma as he should be.

  • @foxlilly5 But where is Mr Knightley's passion, brooding and anger in the novel?? Nowhere, it´s mostly dialog. Does he have to be angry to be wise or critical? He loves her, that much IS in the novel. He loves her with her faults. So I think this is an allowed interpretation that fits the novel quite well, plus, it is the most verbatim so far, and I love that.

  • *winces*

i'm actually cringing at how bad this is. It gets worse and worse! i shall keep watching to see hw they've written Mrs E and her caro sposo lol.

  • Honestly, this is one of the worse adaptations of a Jane Austen novel that I have ever seen. Understandably, the script was changed as to attract more viewers, but it does not have any remanents of Austen's clever language at all which dulls every episode.

What disappoints me the most is that Mr. Knightley is so inarticulate.

Overall, the cast is great and the script sucks.

  • i cant get this thing to load past 4 minutes :(

  • i think what imasinnerimasaint meant was that this being a BBC production, integrity should be uphold in the construction of the language.

  • "How we are all drawn to Hartfield like magnets, and cannot leave. I have heard Emma say a dozen times she will never marry..."

The look of sheer disappointment and pain on Knightley's face when he says that - how could Mrs. Westin not know?!

  • @MauraAnastasia She does.....she's just holding it in. LOL

  • I must say for some reason, Harriet Smith reminds me of Taylor Swift...at least they kind of look similar

  • Emma looks like a younger Drew Barrymore... wow.

  • omg, i was trying to figure out who she looked like, and you're right!

  • Especially when she smiles.

  • I was trying to figure out as well!

  • i think this is a good adaptation of emma :)

  • "I have never had any fault to find in Emma's person. She has always been the cleverest and prettiest of family. Emma has always been of special regard. I love to look at her"

SOO adorable!!! haha and forshadowing much!?

  • Emma, Emma, Emma. You're such a snob with regards to Mr. Martin. I'd fight Harriet for him!

  • Mr. Martin...wow he's so handsome...

  • My only beef with this version of Emma is that it's the only one to use incorrect English grammar regarding Harriet's parentage. Both Mrs Goddard and Mr Knightley (later on) say "she's the natural daughter of nobody knows who". It should be whom. Who is the nominative (subject) of the relative pronoun, whom is the accusative (object) and genitive (possessive). In this instance the possessive 'whom' should be used. It bugs me. I'm a grammar Nazi, I'm afraid, but in JA so should the directors be.

  • "the natural daughter of....well, we don't really know who" this is what she actually says

  • You are correct, she does say this, while Mr. Knightley says "the natural daughter of nobody knows who". It does not change the case of the relative pronoun, which is still connected to "of" regardless of the other words in between, still genitive, and thus should still be whom. JA used it correctly in the book, and the BBC should have as well.

  • so are you (correct), however bbc might have thought that it wasn't a big deal...so why don't we just go back to enjoying this adaptation of emma, and by the way thanks for the brief english grammar lesson...

  • Ok. It IS pretty good, apart from that. They cast it very well.

  • @imasinnerimasaint Actually, I think "...Well, we don't really know who," is a separate sentence. The first is left unfinished, which would make the "who" in the second sentence a subject, right? I would no longer be connected by the "of." So then the use of "who" would be correct.

I think it depends on whether you think that was one long and rather fumbled sentence or two. My vote is on two.

  • @Sarandib22 "Well, we don't really know who" - who is in the accusative here and should therefore still be whom.

  • @Sarandib22 Btw in case you don't know, accusative is the object, genitive is the possessive. The dog (nominative) chased the tail (accusative) of the cat (genitive). Or: The dog (nom.) chased the cat's (genitive) tail (accusative). Who knows the answer? Do you know whom knows the answer? It may not be in common usage these days, but for JA it should still be used.

  • Yes, I think they miscast Blake as Mr. Elton. He's far too handsome and charming to play such a ninny.

  • @SnapeGirlUSA Elton was supposed to be quite goodlooking, and very charming. Too charming in fact. That was part of his ninnyness. :D

  • And I must admit, after watching the entire series, that Blake actually did a wonderful job at being smug and petty and quite frankly, creepy, to my surprise.

  • He did didn't he. :c) I'm very happy with him as Elton. I love how he's totally ruled by his equally terrible wife though. Remember the donkey?

  • Jonny Lee Miller also appeared in the 1983 version of Mansfield Park as Charles Price, when he was only 10 or 11 yrs old. Seems he was destined to keep appearing in Jane Austen films :)

  • Ohh, Mr. Martin is so earnest, haha! (:

  • Johnny Lee Miller was Edmund in Mansfield Park (1999) and Blake Ritson was Edmund in Mansfield Park as well (2007).

  • And their both HOT! :D hahahaha

  • It made me laugh how far mr knightley and mrs weston had to walk just to sit in the garden:)

  • haha i love "But what of the gypsies!?" haha

  • I'm so pleased they show more of the secondary characters, of Knightley in London with his brother, etc.

  • "I love to look at her!" XD

  • well wasn't Mr Elston Edmund in Mansfield a couple years ago, he was the romantic lead, like its said--too cute to hate :)

  • Mr Knightley aka Johnny Lee Miller was Edmund in Mansfield park, indeed.

  • wow jonny lee miller is gorgeous

  • ppl, tell me, where is Jane Austen's language? do you feel like it's Jane Austen's language at all?

  • Most of Mr. Knightley's conversation with Mrs Weston uses the language from the book. There are some bits that aren't exactly Austen, but I think they did a pretty good job throughout the movie.

  • that is the best looking mr. martin i've seen in all the emma adaptations:)

  • i really dont like robert martin! dunno why! i like mr knightley he is just so kind, considerate and bickers with emma like a brother would do. cute love in my opinion. In episode 3 dont know if you saw it but he dances with harriet and makes her really happy and then dances such a romantic dance with emma. made my heart melt.

  • He is not plain at all!!!

  • Uhh ... Mr. Martin was never hotter. :P

  • oh my god mr. martin is so hot

    best one yet

  • Another letter from jane.... I am running away

  • He is my Mr.Martin....

  • Blake Ritson is waaaay too hot to play Elton! lol

  • If I'm remembering correctly the Mr. Elton from the novel was supposed to be attractive.

  • true. And very...

  • omg yes.. it almost too heartbreaking to hate him as we supposedly should do...

  • I agree! I hated elton in the book, but Blake makes it too hard for me to hate elton, plus i loved him in the 2007 version of mansfield park!

  • @manicoco18 Yes, he is far too cte to play Elton...

  • @manicoco18

hahahahahaha we're supposed to want mr. knightly, but right now...I want mr. elton.

  • @fbmomiji Wanting Mr Elton is fine until he proves what an ass he really is. :D

  • @MsDarcyfan In the book Mr Elton is described as a good-looking man!!

  • @badabo0um he's not bad looking in here lol

  • @MsDarcyfan but he does such a great job at looking gloomy and all sweaty, and like a sissy

  • @MsDarcyfan Agreed! I dislike seeing him as any less smiley or sweet than Edmund in Mansfield Park.
