Sounds like the track in the marshalling yard isn't too happy about the weight! Wonder when a locomotive or train of any description used those yards!
@edj66 Actually its not the weight so much as the fact that steam locos dont bend when going round curves. The sounds are those of the flanges on the wheels playing the rails like a violin. These were the most common and evocative sounds of my youth in the 50s/60s, living in a steam town.
Having said all that, this run is nothing compare to 46229's run in 1996, when she had the same load, started with a 40mph slack at Tebay, and blitzed Shap Summit at 56mph!!!
Nice one. I watched this run on PSOV's Mainline 2002 Volume 1, and in the commentry Karl Jauncey pointed out the Duchess could have gone over the summit faster, had it not been for some foolish passenger playing around with a butterfly valve and applying the brakes for a few seconds. I'm sure 6233 would have reached the summit in the high 40s at least had that not happened. What do you think?
Hope all aboard had their buckets and spades with them Those were the days. Brings back good memories.

Mr Stanier certainly knew how to design a lovely locomotive.

I may have to retract my statement on the SNCF P 17 as being the most beautiful steam engine in the world.

but unlucky at 2:27 ! Not really, it all adds to the contrast between old and new rogerbloggeruk. Thanks for the comment.

There are some great shots here, the ones just ambling round the sidings are very different from belting up Shap.
