Really great video! I like how you relate it to what people already know, and cover a lot of the major features. I haven't heard the security aspect given much attention in overviews such as this one, you made some good points. It's kinda surprising how relevant this is, years after you made it.
@MrJason005 no they don't, you can always choose to instal 2 operating systems on 1 machine without losing your main os even if the hard drive is not yet partitioned (dual boot) it is very easy, you just have to read some instructions while installing stuff... oh and for Linux you'll have to know the relations between kilobytes and megabytes.... all the installation processes are so dumbed down that it's amazing people are still able f*ck it up
@KittyRawrMuffin I am a Avid Ubuntu user after many problems with windows and you can run Ubuntu on side of Windows if you need some of the features such as games and such Then ensure u have a large enough hard drive if you don't i would recommend Lubuntu which is a lighter version
@demoniccurses9 there's wine for ubuntu/linux ...he can still use photoshop or any windows apps but gimp comes as standard in ubuntu (it's almost the same as old versions of photoshop) it all depends on his PC.. how much space he has and how good is his computing power to "emulate" stuff in wine... or he can install windows in a virtual machine (oracle has such an app if I recall) withing ubuntu... possibilities are endless..and this came from a windows user :)
however, I have bad experience with emulating windows software (particulary phothosop and games) since many times it doesn't work perfectly; \virtual machine is an option I use but windows 7, like many windows is a resource hog so it works pretty bad on virtual pc (then again, my pc sucks balls as well); but you're right, with ubuntu, you have no limits!
@demoniccurses9 eh... how bad can it be? I still use win vista on a machine with a crappy phenom 1st generation quad processor, 4 gigs of ram (ddr2 at 800mhz lol), 2 crappy video cards in SLI (2x 8600gts) and plenty of space and have had problems with games only (crappy vid cards and big monitor resolution was and still is the reason, those cards cannot deal with new stuff at 1680x1050) other than that anything else runs like cream on this old "toy boy" :D
@Szeba86 well, how about a crappy Intel Dual Core 2.6 GHz, 3 GB DDR2 and nVidia 9400 (I know, at least the video card it's decent -.-')
the only thing which actually makes a value in my bs of a PC is the 460GB HDD which makes dual booting pretty much the only practical solution in using both Win and Ubu;
@demoniccurses9 damn, you need and upgrade more than I do, and only a 460 HDD? how on earth do you manage to survive with such little space nowadays? I have a 1TR Samsung Sata2 HDD (partitioned in 2, from which 50GB is for windows and the rest is for storing stuff) +a Seagate (after 3 or 4 Maxtors, new ones Sata 2, died on me) 500GB (backup purposes for important stuff only) and an old WD Black ATA HDD 80GB (this slow oldie seems to be more stable than the Seagete) &is not enough
@Szeba86 it's called romanian standards (romania being probably the shitiest country on this fucking planet) and sadly it's my home country :(
tbh I'm a highschool student so I'm not doing that much of a productive work so I'm in no need for TB space; the HDD is, ironically, the least crappiest part of my PC;
I never complained about the space even once; the CPU on the other hand.......
@demoniccurses9 hehe, I'm romanian as well! (I know some hungarian too but that's not my native language) and got paid in the first 2 years of college for good grades (bursa),graduated in 2009, that's how I managed to put together this PC, part by part, with that money and what I got for b-day and Christmas... study hard and when you'll go to college/university they'll pay you if you're good ;)
I tried it once but couldn't find the programs that I needed. All the programs were available for winxp so I had to go back to it. the functions I needed but didn't find were a MOD to FLV converter, and also an eqivalent to Video Lightbox.
I suggest to everyone that wants to try Linux or Ubuntu to install VBOX and have fun without destroying your OS. It gives you a true chance without danger to experience Linux fully inside a Virtual Environment. Once you get familiar and want to get serious then re-install from cd. GL.
@mozarthmoob Virtualbox is just something what is no need to use. Thats why we have had liveCD for decade and possibility to install distribution as file to other filesystems like Windows so you can just delete the file in Windows when you dont want anymore the distribution to be bootable. Virtual box is for those who need to run multiple software systems same time for testing/support purposes.
PS Linux is the operating system in Ubuntu too. Ubuntu is just one of the many distributions of Linux.
@TheFri13 If you have ever hosted a website on a windows server from a company, their sites have to be taken down at least once per month and they usually don't say they are up all the time. All big web hosting companies who claim to be up 99.99% of the time are on Linux/Unix servers not because they are poor, but because they are reliable. Big difference.
I kind of see it this way... MS releases OS with known bugs already in there. XP had 11 fixes listed before the OS hit the shelves. GREED.
@shaebedi what I wrote was sarcasm... Of course serious service providers and governments choose Linux instead NT when they need operating system what is super stable and very fast and secure. Thats why Linux has gained dominant position at server markets and other mission critical systems and why Linux has got nickname "Unix 2.0".
I have ubuntu installed as well as windows vista on my computer, I would really like to use ubuntu but I cant get my computer's wireless to work on ubuntu :(
@Sanvorae yeah, except if you backup every file that is important to you. and if you are a noob, backup means: copy your files to somewhere else so they could be safe
(Keep in mind when reading this I have no bias to any OS, just making a point) Just like with OS X, the reason it doesn't get viruses is probably simply because no one makes them for it.
i love it,great user interface,great system capabilities...but you gotta be such a code monkey to get things working,like the repository! geeze trying to download and install a video driver is a pain in the ass..
Just what I wanted. I'm repairing an old PC tomorrow, with a new HDD and RAM and I'm gonna install Ubuntu as the primary OS. Just wanted to see how it looked in video and I must say I'm impressed, looking forward to trying it out for myself.
what is ubuntu? well, in my 3 hour experience of downloading and installing ubuntu... it is a giant pain in the fucking ass that takes issue with every single little fucking thing i try and do. "ill install compiz" wait, no i cant.. "package dependencies cannot be resolved" hmm. fuck. ill spend the next 20 minutes googling it, only to find a handful of terminal commands that i enter which either arent recognized or do absolutely fucking nothing. AVOID if u dont have the patience, stick to win7
@kuzeth Hahaha omg you're experience sounds like a pain in the ass indeed. How old is your hardware btw? I had no issues installing on an AMD Phenom II x4 BE, Asus M4A87TD, Corsair DDR3 4GB Sata HDD 1 Tera. It installed easier than my Windows XP did (XP had sound issues, couldn't handle HD). Quite a difference in our experiences :D
@PenguinRecordings haha yeah. its a dell inspirion mini 10v, roughly 2-3 years old. but the funny thing is, its installed perfectly with absoltely no issues on a toshiba satellite L20, which im guessing is from the early 2000's with its 18gb hdd lol. funny how that works hey. im just gonna have to apologise to the operating system and blame it on my craptop, because the other lappy i installed it on has had no issues.. AT ALL, despite the fact that 10.10 runs quite slow after installing macbuntu
@PenguinRecordings haha its my mates lappy, just trying to get some use out of it while the hardwares still kicking. think i might have to bite the bullet and delete linux off it though. it wont boot 2/3 times and just runs real slow since macbuntu is on it. probably better off just running a clean version of xp and disabling a few features lol
only reason linux is good is cause its open source, problem is theres like 9128731928371928417239812731263187 different versions to choose from, but ubuntu is the best for personal computing
I just installed and tried it on my dad's old computer. It is pretty nice for being free but for some reason the mouse and keyboard drivers failed so now I can't interact with it. :3 Probably because the drivers were designed for windows though.
@gtafan94 yes, there are multiple ways of doing it, the easiest is to just download the WUBI installer from the ubuntu website and run it. Google is your friend
I only got introduced to Ubuntu when I saw the installation process of it [it didn't work on the computer it was installing to, though]. Which was today [2/10/11].
@LemellYT have you even tried ubuntu? For a free product its pretty good. Stop being a windows fan boy. I also use windows7 for my pc, but that doesnt make it the BEST OS.
Even that you get Linux freely and you dont need to pay from it from kernel.org site, it is still best operating system what is on market today. It is developed in big money and by top OS researchers and developers what are there. The operating system was just achieved a 3.0 milestone few days ago and it is been developed 25 years.
NT is OS but it is not better than Linux. Linux does have own problems but they are very small when compared to NT. (Now when we are talking about OS)
@LemellYT I agree with you on this. If you have yet to try linux, don't complain about it. That is just your fear of the unknown making you think MS products are better... I am sorry any company who can put out products that are full of KNOWN bugs and errors because of greed, is not a good company. Linux is not based on greed, its based on need. Much better.
@noremorse126 yes and no. for security, yes. for applications it has some great apps but not nearly as much as windows or mac. for example if you edit video it has very few apps for that. if you do stuff with the internet it has lots of apps. if you have a windows app and need it and you have ubuntu you can use wine. wine lets you run windows programs on ubuntu. Also it has less drivers.
@SuperFardin10 why would you spend the money on a macbook pro when you can get a cheap laptop and run ubuntu on it. The reason macs are so expensive is because you are paying for the OS. Which may be tiger, leopard, snow leopard etc. If you get a laptop, get an ASUS or something like that and run ubuntu on it. Otherwise you should go ahead and install ubuntu on your mac, but it takes some getting used to.......
If you want to learn how to use ubuntu come to my channel and check out the tutorials I have made. They're very simple and straightforward, all of them are made with new users in mind! =) Just click on my name to enter my channel!
is there anyway to make ubuntu to make it my ONLY OS...you know like get rid of windows? i wont be using it again and i dont want it on mah machine any more so is there anyway to remove windows entirely and keep ubuntu?
@bezeker12 yes there is a way i believe the newer version brings an installer which gives you the option to make it double boot or completly erase your current OS and install ubuntu in place for it
Do you know of any good what you see is what you get website editors? Also maybe a Flash program so i can make flash with ActionScript? Is there any programs like photoshop?
@codymoss3300 Kompozer is wysiwyg web editor, gimp is like photoshop and currently there are no flash IDEs that i know of but there are animators that can export in in .swf
I'm fed up with windows crashing and security issues.- I'm off

@dnapiorkowski99 Good to know
I have always wondered why governments (US. China etc) and Fortune 500 companies choose Linux over NT when they want reliable servers.
Or why most web servers have chosen Linux and not NT when it comes to choose what OS to use.
Or that most people use Linux in their smartphones, (even that they dont know it and they have paid hundreds of their phones).
Or that over 90% of supercomputers are ran by Linux.
Now I know, they are all poor!

@gtafan94 yes, there are multiple ways of doing it, the easiest is to just download the WUBI installer from the ubuntu website and run it. Google is your friend

@LemellYT have you even tried ubuntu? For a free product its pretty good. Stop being a windows fan boy. I also use windows7 for my pc, but that doesnt make it the BEST OS.
Kwakobo 6 months ago
@Kwakobo
TheFri13 6 months ago
@LemellYT I agree with you on this. If you have yet to try linux, don't complain about it. That is just your fear of the unknown making you think MS products are better... I am sorry any company who can put out products that are full of KNOWN bugs and errors because of greed, is not a good company. Linux is not based on greed, its based on need. Much better.

you can play World Of Warcraft or Steam on ubuntu after you install the Wine application (winehq ) first and wine is free and open source as well !

@phonyiem no thos are windows games.
sonicdsfan1 1 year ago
is this better then windows?
noremorse126 1 year ago
@noremorse126 yes and no. for security, yes. for applications it has some great apps but not nearly as much as windows or mac. for example if you edit video it has very few apps for that. if you do stuff with the internet it has lots of apps. if you have a windows app and need it and you have ubuntu you can use wine. wine lets you run windows programs on ubuntu. Also it has less drivers.

should i get ubuntu for my macbook pro
SuperFardin10 1 year ago
@SuperFardin10 do it!
unrealjeff 1 year ago
@SuperFardin10 Bry it out by downloading in and putting it on Virtual Box then if you like it you can install it on your macbook.
ISJHman44 1 year ago
@SuperFardin10 why would you spend the money on a macbook pro when you can get a cheap laptop and run ubuntu on it. The reason macs are so expensive is because you are paying for the OS. Which may be tiger, leopard, snow leopard etc. If you get a laptop, get an ASUS or something like that and run ubuntu on it. Otherwise you should go ahead and install ubuntu on your mac, but it takes some getting used to.......

bezeker12 1 year ago
@bezeker12 yes there is a way i believe the newer version brings an installer which gives you the option to make it double boot or completly erase your current OS and install ubuntu in place for it
