Rose and Cybil, as far as the games are concerned, would have needed to be there for a reason, even if it was to interact with the person currently going through their own purgatory, having the potential not to see any monsters, or simply their own, but not always.
The movie deviates from this in that it gives Silent Hill a face: Alyssa, and the actual story of it revolves around her.
@thant0s While there are things that I didn't like about the filmic translation of the game, there's one basic reason why the changes exist: with a game, you can spend HOURS immersed in it; in a film, you have to bring everything home a lot quicker, especially due to the short ADHD-ridden attention spans of many of today's filmgoers. Therefore, film and game are two different continuities. Anyway, I think Gans did a pretty good job, in spite of the changes made between the two mediums.
you guys are getting it all wrong.. i know what the movie ending is all about, so let me explain.. ok silent hill was not only the mind of the little girl but it also represented hell.. the people who were in the church belived in that faulse religion only to stay alive, but they all went to hell for a reson so they needed to get punished for here sins.. so the devil(pyrimid head with the siyth) used pure souls to enter the church to get to the siners that needed to be punished..

Silent Hill 2 shows why people in the alternate form can not see people in the foggy form (since only some people can see certain monsters, the same applies to the world of Silent Hill) but that is as much as I can say w/o ruining the game, go get sh2

Silent Hill 2 has the most detailed explanation on what Silent Hill is/Pyramid Head is/Monsters are/etc. Basically you only see the monsters if you are guilty of a crime (such as murder) and you only see Pyramid Head if you are guilty of a crime of passion (like rape, which is why Pyramid Head likes to rape people in SH2 or rip off clothes in the movie)
If they make the next Silent Hill movie a continue of this first movie i promise that i will buy the bluray for first in my life.

I don't like the film's version of Magdalene at all.
It's paced too weirdly and dummied up with extra notes that weren't necessary at all.
It completely misses the feeling of fragility, emptiness and sorrow of the original.

in 2 there is a little girl who knows your wife, and she can travel through silent hill without seeing monsters because she is innocent.
