It was common for stations in the US that were in cities close to the Canadian border and served Canada on Cable to have both US and Canadaian national anthems at sign on and sign off.
haha zjc u got to be kidding canada is a much better looking country thats why and the canadian one is shorter so deal with it american 2:06 canadian 1:21 so dont be petty
Seeing the snow covered scenes there, has any television network ever altered the sign off for holidays? Such as using a Christmas themed song during December (or at least on Christmas morning) rather than the Star Spangled Banner?
I remember getting up early on school days just to watch the WNED sign-ons (reverse of the sign-off) with the weather radio simulcast before AM Weather. Brings back a lot of memories
I believe that this recording of TSSB is by none other than Buffalo's own, the Philharmonic! It is the definitive orchestral recording of the U.S. anthem. Powerful.
Thank you so much for posting this! I've been searching for this!! I remember the canadian one from my childhood...especially the guy smoking on that boat!!
BTW are they showing the new Dr Who on WNED? They're showing it on WXXI Rochester New York on Saturday nights so I wondered if all of the public television stations are showing it?
Yes we do. It's broadcast simitaneously in Toronto. Channel 17's call letters esentially stand for Western New York Educational TV.
They had a second Public Television station but they couldn't keep running it WNEQ channel 23 so it became a privately run station while WNED remains the Public Television station for Western New York and Southern Ontario.
iangorton, they are able to get this in Canada specificaly Toronto. In Toronto it is channel 61. if you ever see the logo it usually says toronto.buffalo

The Canadian portion of the sign-off has much more awesome footage than the American one. As an American, I am offended.

In Canada, Channel 17 has always been prefered over our Toronto-based Canadian public tv network TVO (channel 2)
You can even put Channel 17 in with an antenna.

For those wondering, the tones heard before the carrier was cut, were 440 Hz and 1078 Hz.
