  • I total agree with Horsiegirl913. I really thought we were beyond such cruelty, like some third world country or something. OUR feet hurt when we walk on hard surfaces all day (and our shoes have padding). How would we feel if we had to walk with wooden clogs on those same hard surfaces for 9 hours with cars zooming right up to us too many times a day and THEN not getting a chance to get adequate rest????? I can't BELIEEEEVE this is happening in NYC. How can there be a stop put to this?

  • From what I can tell NYC is no place for horses and it's not properly regulated to stop the horses being mistreated. However it can be done right in the right city with the right rules. I spend a lot of time in Melbourne and it's much quieter, greener and the traffic is MUCH safer. I haven't seen a single horse there that isn't healthy and happy to be there. I've ridden all my life, horses are my passion and I know what I'm talking about. I'd like to see them off of NYC streets though.

  • I'm no animal activist. And to be honest, I never cared for horses (as far as riding them) I would much rather ride a car. But it is stupid for them to be riding in the city. They are animals, they don't belong in congested traffic. It made sense to have them in the city before cars, but now, its dumb. They're honestly a hindrance in traffic. It takes them much longer than cars. I hate driving behind a horse, its annoying to see in traffic. Let them be in their natural habitat.

  • Ok I live in the country and I saw horse carriages should only be used in parks or fields NEVER public roads

  • horses shouldn't be worked on hard surfaces constantly anyways becaue it splinters their bones.... they also need free time other than just in a stall. I beleive horses sould work out mainly on giving surfaces, they should only be worked 2 out of every 3 days, they need at least a ten by ten foot stall or more for drafts, and that the need at least an hour of turn out on nice days. it would make Horses actually like working.

  • very sad..;(

  • Horse carriage rides should remain only in central park. These horses aren't meant to be put in a city with fumes, bad conditions, and traffic. As much as I love horse carriage rides and rode one when I was little through NYC, the negatives are becoming more and more apparent. They need better living conditions and better locations to do the carriage rides. These are retired horses so they do need something to do, discontinuing carriage rides forever would be unfortunate, just need to limit them

  • @sunlei5 the horses are poorly fed and they don't have enough room for them to get a restorative sleep. Happy? maybe when they're young. You have no idea what you're talking about. Have some compassion and let those "drivers" get a legitimate job.

  • this is what happens when NYC trys to go country...

  • So how many of you actually know anything about horses????I think that NYC has to much traffic for horses..but most poor horse people have no idea what they are talking about!!!

  • NYC scum city of the world

  • is anyone a horse person here? horses sleep standing up actually... so they dont necessarily need a stall big enough to lay down in. some horses dont even lay down.. plus, these horses we made for this. this is just stupid.

  • @amazeme4352 Although horses do stand for the majority of the time they are sleeping, they do also need a place to lay down. Although as they get older, many horses lay down less and less. However, this is irrelevant as the stall they showed actually looks perfectly big to lay down in. And as far as standing in there own waste...welcome to ANY barn. Unless you muck out a stall 24/7 your horse will stand in their own waste...it happens.

  • 9 hours is too long ... ask a person to walk on pavement 9 hours a day for a month let alone pulling a cart and tell me how bad you feel ... then the horses go into a building, they never even get to eat grass or run and play ... utterly disgusting

  • Did you hear about obama passing the bill on reopening slaughter houses! Hes not as stupid as I thought he was!

  • @mmcarriagecompanyits probably a good thing.... its humane

  • @LazyHaleyJRabbitry its sad but it must be done.

  • I always thought that looked so sweet, outsiders who have never seen this would never know they are treated liek this or made to walk through traffic.. thats is beyond horrible.. these people should be shot.

  • Very sad. The carriage horses should be limited to Central Park. There's no need for the horses to be on congested Manhattan streets.

  • Sensationalism

  • I can't believe how many people support this. No one who actually spends time with horses and knows them would make such stupid comments. Horses are meant to belong to a herd, graze on grass and have lots of roaming space. Not "work" in traffic 9 hours or more. That by itself is cruel. Even working animals need acceptable working conditions and free time. They're not a tool which you use every day and then just pop back in to the box and take it out the next day again. This is sickening.

  • I'd like to run horse drawn carriages in Alaska one day for the airline I'd like to run there but I may only run carriages in smaller communities like Barrow, Nome, Savoonga, Bethel Stebbins or Unalakleet anywhere where there isn't quite as much motor traffic.

  • The claims about the stalls in this video are absolutely ridiculous..

  • 9 hours is way to long :(

  • Horses have been bred and maintained as work animals since man fiorst discovered them. That's their job. Cruelty is seeing beautiful, healthy horses go into slaughter houses because someone has no use for them or they are too expensive to maintain. Horse ownership is a very expensive proposition. Without uses for them, they would be put down. Horses in captivity live long, healthy lives. The wild mustangs in the west, not so much. They are prone to attacks by preditors, diseases and starvation.

  • Sad sad sad

  • The harp seals being clubbed to death at 3 weeks old is a tragedy, but work horses doing their job? I d not see this as terrible. Horses in stables the world over stand in their poo, that is why they must be swept out. Also, PEOPLE get hit and killed by cars too! But I suppose we are not 'animals' ???

  • @mbrumder New York City is no place for a horse. They're naturally very nervous animals. With all the loud hustle and bustle, it's a lot of stress on them.

You have to be around horses and get to know them in order to understand.

  • You're thinking of elephants. Horses love to lie down and sleep. You can drive by a pasture, and they'll all be on the ground snoozing away.

""they have barely enough room to lie down essential to archive deep sleep" O.o seance when? If a horse lies down for too long it can cause internal damage. Horses rarely lie down and when they do its not for very long. They sleep on there feet for a reason. They are prey animals and huge ones at that..""

  • people need to see both sides of the story not just one animal rights people might go a bit over the top with things all animal industy is going to have abuse in it no matter what.... all we need to do is get rid of them not ban it, its not fair on the people how do care for there animals

  • My best friend is a carriage driver in Natchitoches, Lousiana. The horses work most of the year, but their heaviest time is during the Christmas Season--which is a major deal for Natch. They are completely off in January and February because it is so cold. As for where they go at night, they have lots of pastureland to graze on as well as actual horse feed.

  • that is horrible. Like, not the actually horse and carrage. That's alright as long as your not mistreating them. but that must be terrifying to be around all of those honking horn, big metal monsters coming at you, and sometimes hitting you. they didn't ask for that. They should have seperate roads for carrages with horses.

  • Get rid of cars for goodness sake... RECLAIM THE STREETS!!

  • All horses stand in their own waste, it's a fact of horses living in stalls!!! Stupid radical video.

  • Horses pulling carriages are fine. horses pulling carriages on either boiling or icy pavement, in car fumes and traffic all day living in (LITERALLY) apartments... is not ok. Many of these drivers are not horse people, they are just schmucks making money (not all, but some) and that's when you see horses with neglected hoofs, malnourishment or overwork

  • First I wanna say that this video is about CITY horse drawn carrages.

I am fine with them out on the country side or even in Disney, they get the correct care. Yes they should not have them in cities or nyc.

No, they do not belong in the city, but there not bad on the countryside.

  • If the drivers treat the horses nicely and the stupid cars watch where they are going then there is no cruelty i know a horse that does this and he actually does love it you can tell because he comes running when you call his name and he always "smiles". The cars are to blame for most accidents and some people are just mean it happens everywhere you just have to accept the fact that if an animal can be kept in activity then there are going to be people who abuse it.

  • If you want to protect the horses you should proctect theyre jobs. Because that's the small place that they still have in our citys.

Horses can be happy working on carriages I,ve been a carriage driver for 16 years now and the horses that worked with me showed me they where happy to comme to work in all kinds of ways. Just like your dog is happy to see the leach wen it's time for a walk.

  • @ZestyFlash lol, that's hilarious... sure, just like when a dogs wants to go out for a walk and pull more than it's weight with every single step.

  • This is exactly the sort of thing that makes people not listen to Peta and other animal welfare groups. When people make bogus arguments, people turn a blind ear to more legit ones.

  • horses do lay down to sleep ,mine are put into a 12x 12 stall every night and sleep for up 6 hrs lying down and streched out ,beautiful sight ,wake up america ,who the hell wants to be in a carriage in the middle of new york ,how romantic is that ,i hated to watch even the video ,it was discusting

  • I'm okay with horse-drawn carriages, as long as they have a nice place to go at the end of the day. Here in Australia I often talk to the people who own the horses and they often say that they keep them in a paddock for the night.

  • The horses have to work 9+ hrs a day? I have to work 10 to 12 hrs a day unloading trucks to get by. Being a horse sound ok to me.

  • nice one I guess people don't understand suttle humor anymore

  • i would be nice if they were imited to only central park. no cars there. some ppl said they should make horse-only lanes. but i disagree. new york city, lots of traffic... ppl will go in any lane they please

  • not if you put a physical barrier, like a guardrail or jersey barrier. It could be done. Or, as you said, just limit the rides to central park. I've never seen carriages in NY just going around the streets like on these clips. As for the accident factor...we don't even care enough to prevent the 40,000 HUMAN deaths that occur in cars each year. I'd like to bet that not even one carriage horse per year gets hit by a car--that sounds like a pretty rare occurrence to me.

  • I think animals deserve rights. These horses don't ask to pull carriages, or for people to be put on their backs. Now, if we do things the safe, friendly, and natural way, then we're just fine.

    Just my opinion, though.

  • before you critcise the equestrian world, please take time to realise that they're are many different ways in which people treat their horses and you can't lump us all into one category. In some cases the fact that we all sit on horses backs is the only simularity! People seem to get the impression that we just jump on to horses backs and whip them and kick them and force them in to doing what we want (I'll admit a few people do this) but the majority don't.

  • i've seen some abusive drivers as well from a personal experience in a carriage ride gone wrong in 2006. horse slipped and fell and was enduring countless beatings for it in front of a huge crowd that was impatient to get home before storms that day hit.

driving carriages in new york looks dangerous. i thought that the carriages were only limited to central park though. and that clip where that taxi almost hit that carriage was pretty scary to watch.

  • Well, I am mixed on this situation. They do need to improve the safety aspects of the horse-drawn carriage.

Put horse-only lanes, so that the horse-drawn carriages are protected from the traffic. They can have special lanes where they can go during a cross-walk to prevent horses from being hit by cars when crossing an intersection.

Also, there should be some oversight to make sure that these animals are healthy and taken care of.

  • Just another injustice put on the animals..I don't understand why the hell they even have horses running around the city..I beleive the car took their place..why bring them back? just for a romantic ride in the city..with honking cars sirens people yelling..This is plain ignorance!

  • I agree that it is extremely cruel to house horses in stables with no access to a pasture. Horses are grazing animals and are best kept in pastures to keep them sane. However, the video is incorrect. Horses dont sleep laying down. They cant lay down for more than 30 mins because it puts a lot of weight and pressure on their organs. They normally do sleep standing up, but it is good for them to lay down once in a while and sunbathe in a nice paddock or something

  • @kamiakpartigirl They sleep most of the night standing up but for part of the night they also sleep laying down and that is very important. They need to have the space to rest on the ground.

  • out with the old in with the new

  • then someone actually DO something about it. this is sad.

  • Another cheerleader! RA RA SIS BOOM BA !!!! Somebody ELSE do something I'm to busy watching YouTube Videos!!!

  • people are stupid. Like really act now before we have nothing left. sooner or later everything is going to die, we have way to much power.

  • Y cant ppl just use the horse drawn carriages in a park there is no traffic there!?!?!?

  • "they have barely enough room to lie down essential to archive deep sleep" O.o seance when? If a horse lies down for too long it can cause internal damage. Horses rarely lie down and when they do its not for very long. They sleep on there feet for a reason. They are prey animals and huge ones at that...

Well thats all that bothered me from this video...

  • BUT how can you overlook that the 9+ hours of hauling carriages labor they're forced to do is a far cry from the normal activities in a natural lifestyle that you're thinking of.

  • do you have a horse

mine could run all day everyday with me on it

but i do disagree with a horse in the city

    pollution and such

    animals need clean air

  • fyi, laying down does not cause internal damage, in herds, almost all the herd members will have about 4 hrs a day deep sleep on their SIDE. while others watch for danger. the rest of the sleep they get is naps, done standing.for gods sake, read a few behavioural books on wild horses :-p

  • That's not true

  • actually the horses look ok body weight wise, hoofs look good and they seem happy., and you keep talking about the horses in all kinds of bad weather when the driver is right up there getting rained on aswell. I think you are going after a industry and cause many people to lose their jobs. Why don't you try to help improve stall size and make the roads safer for the carrages? HSUS use your 501c status to aquire gov. buildings/land for stalls. build more water stations. help- not destroy.

  • Stupid comment

The carriage horse people refuse to have any dealings with the HSUS or to make any compromise like housing them in the Park

They make $15 million off these horses and it's just inhumane. NYC is not the farm

  • Aww those poor things!!! Thank you for making me aware of what these horses go through....I didn't know was this bad!!!

  • Horses are killed by cars every day on country lanes far away from cities, this is becouse of ACCIDENT not cruelty and as for fumes they too are everywhere, people in the country have cars too The comment about the horses standing in their own waste is insane as ALL horses in stables do that, that is why they have straw,to soak it up (not for a bed, horses don't make nests ) they wont die just because they stand in poo. Who's going to tell the Queen to stop trooping the colour?

  • I completely support this. The horses are constantly in danger, and they shouldn't be treated like this. The laws regarding the horses should be strongly enforced.

  • But they're not. That's what we are complaining about

  • Any horse can be maltreated, so not sure this is carriage related. At least they have a job, so aren't just destroyed. Why not enforce rules on care and treatment vs outlaw carriages?

  • Wow, I hadn't even thought of that. I think horse drawn carriages should be banned from operating on city streets.

  • That is not right what they do and they need to enforce some kind of law as well as the police.

  • Thank you for showing people the truth about New York's horse-drawn carriage industry.

  • Thanks for getting this out,,,

  • horrible !

  • Thank You for this video.

  • i never knew it was this bad! omg, i'm so sad for them..

  • so true. pity for those poor horses in NYC, see my videos as well. peace

  • how incredibly sad. i have never really thought about horse drawn carriages being cruel because the only ones i've seen are in leavenworth, washington. that town is relatively small and is rarely ever full of traffic, only on holidays like oktoberfest. i will surely ask someone if the horses are made to work through the traffic of tourists on holidays in Leavenworth. thanks for posting this HSUS.

  • poor innocent animals :[

    gfhgfjhgfhgdsfdzxx

  • Well this is an outrage!!! :*(
