I just rescued an Eleanora Ccokatoo. Someone was selling one on craigslsit. When I got there the bird was in a cage that would be suitable for a conure. The cage was chipped, bent, and rusted. The bird had a metal pipe as a perch, and 2 cheap plastic bowls for food and water. All the bird was getting to eat was sunflower seeds! The bird also had minor plucking on the chest that would probably have gotten worse. I'm glad we saved her. She will no longer be neglected. She'll be cared for properly.
@JonsenMT That's exactly how we found Jazzy - on Craig's list. And, if it makes you feel any better, the people we got him from had rescued him from a similar situation - the cage was bigger, but it was in a trailer! His feathering was a lot lighter then, too.
I know she'll appreciate your kindness, but she might try to test you a bit, just to make sure you aren't going to give up on her. Jazzy was like this for the first year or so we had him. I got bitten A LOT, but now we are best friends!
@eegorr That's really cool! We just got our Medium about 2 days ago. They said he is 4 years old. We named him Coco:) We've been giving him fruits, and mixed seed. We'll get him started on pellets pretty soon. Every time someone leaves the room he screams. He's starting to get better luckily. My dad can pet him but he sometimes lunges at me when he's in his cage. It's really a great feeling to rescue such an amazing animal though. I'm glad to see your bird's in a way better enviornment.
@Tnem56 We think Jazzy is 11-12 years old. We've had him for a little over 4 years and were told he was 7 when we got him (see my more recent comment about Craig's list).
His previous owners only had him for a few months when they found that one of them was alergic to cockatoo dust! They had rescued him from a nasty situation and were told by his previous owners that he came from the Tropicana in Las Vegas. We verified that he has a chip that was inserted in Vegas, but that's about it.
Greg ~~ This is Karen; I sat next to you on the plane from Tucson to Phoenix. My daughter and I LOVED this, especially when Jazzy lays his head all the way down from side to side. We cracked up! What a cutie! Hope you had a great vacation.
i want one so bad but my parents wnt let me my mom n dad had a divorce and i live with my grandma my grandma hates birds my mom n dad love them we had two moluccan cockatoos Peaches and Conalay good times back hten *sigh*
@Skeetacious That is exactly what he would do when he heard the whistling part of the song on the Saturn ad a few years ago (now Saturn is toast, of course). There are a few other songs he likes, but none as much as this one.
Hi, Irena... I agree, that would be fun! I don't know about Snowball, but I think Jazzy would prefer doing it au natural.
BTW, Tooki (our YCM) died back in December, only a month under six years old. You can hear him squawking along with Rita in the background of this video.
Brilliant! Jazzy's really got the moves, hasn't he? Has he hurt his left leg - or has he just had a snazzy feather-cut so he can look like a real disco dancer?
@eegorr hey my cockatoo has that same leg problem.. shes missing some feathers on her left leg n some by her neck.. how long did it take your cockatoo to grow back the feathers? im worried
@metaljar02 Don't worry. Jazzy's feathers come and go. The only place that looks thin at all on him is that one leg - he is definitely not a plucker, though he might have been at some point in his life (before we had him). How long have you had your cockatoo?
@eegorr its gona be like 7 months already... the problem is when I bought her she didnt have a crest and everytime it would grow back she would start taking them off I think she scratch them hard.... and her body was full of feathers now shes missing some on her neck n some on her left leg..I think that was just molting cuz they r growing back...her crest is growing back aswell but Im using a foam collar at night cuz thats when the plucking, scratching etc takes place..
This is so hilarious--I almost peed my pants! The best part was when he hear another bird yell, so he stops dancing, but at a certain point it's like he said "eff it!" and just kept goin'. It reminds me of people I've seen...
Very insightful! You are the first person to comment on this. In fact, I really regret not putting the other birds (Rita and Tooki only, at the time - we got Freebie a couple of weeks after I shot this) in another room because they were very distracting. Normally, Jazzy will dance without stopping through this whole song, if he is into it. That is without any coaching.
That said, I really like the way he bobs his head slightly a couple of different times in this video, trying to get the beat again after being distracted by the noisemakers!
We got him in October, 2007 - we were told at the time he was 7, so we figure he is about 9 now. He might be older - he has had 3-4 homes before us, so we know very little about his history. Since we got him he has always danced to music, but it is clear from his response to this song that it is his favorite, especially the whistling parts!
BTW, we were also told that he had been part of a bird show at the Tropicana in LV - we know that he has a chip that was inserted by a vet in LV.
wow! that is an amazing story! he is an ablsolute joy to watch! i'm glad he is in a loving home now! You will have many decades of fun with him as they usually outlive us humans! i don't know why anyone would want to let him go he is a beautiful parrot! :-))))

yup, i have a cockatiel, a sparrow we saved from near death as a baby, and had to keep because she depended on us, and a senegal
not neccesarily huge birds, but ive been around birds most of my life =)
as for adopting...for some reason im a little scared of craigs list =P
but i think my biggest fear is that the bird wont want me as an owner, and itll hurt itself, and me, and just..freak..cuz its old owners werent there =/
Yes, I think we were VERY lucky to find Jazzy. A lot of adopted birds have picked up bad habits and might be a handful at first. That is why Craig's list is good - because everyone advertising is local. That said, I drove about 100 miles to get Jazzy, but my wife and I had both spent a lot of time talking to the owners on the phone first.

And if you do make a visit to check out the bird, don't feel like you are already committed to close the deal. You might want to make a couple of visits before deciding.
Not only is adoption good for the bird, it can be good for you, too. We got Jazzy for about $800, including his large, relatively new cage and all of his toys. Some neighbors GAVE us our other cockatoo, Freebie - they had only had him for a month or two so he probably doesn't even remember them now.
