The Blu-Ray edition of The Thing has a remastered DTS-HD MA-track which is a big step over the Dolby Digital-track that was on the Dvd. However, the picture quality on the Blu-Ray edition isn't as good as the HD-DVD but I prefer the LD.
If that's the case then why didn't Laserdisc stay around? And if the picture quality is in your words better than DVD and even Blu Ray (which I highly doubt) then the technology wouldn't have been replaced by DVD and later Blu Ray.
Comparing the image with the region 2 DVD where the image is slightly on the dark side over the bluray its still the same version! Even the soundtrack has the same minor technical issue on right front with tiny amount of dialogue filtering on it! Same as the! Its the same master digital tape only at higher resolution!
There is also a missing audio commentary track on the Bluray where Kurt Russell makes a comment about Keith David stealing a motorcar in New York City on chapter 20
I like the DVD version and the exclusive six-track Dolby stereo mix which played with Road Show 70mm prints and the sound is so much better the discreteness is so choice on the JBL sound system.
Ive seen The Thing projected once in the cinema late night show mid 1980s optical twin-track Dolby stereo A type. Looked and sounded okay except the cinema was rubbish for picture and sound it didnt have straight walks it was rubbish but I did manage to see it over VHS P&S.
Constant Angular Velocity (CLV) a bit of paper when they could have easily produced a two disc edition. The signature laserdisc Dolby AC-3 which is the same as the DVD and blu ray now then.
If you want the extras you see a flying laserdisc LOL
Ive owned the same version PAL edition which I sold NOOOOOOoooooooooo! Years ago and brought The Thing first edition DVD. They did have six-track Dolby stereo which is on par with digital except for wider frequency response less ware and tear over 70mm mag.

@NitroTab1 Because its a perfect analog transfer of an unmolested print, the Bluray format is miles better but the transfer is not
