My dad had 2 of these god damn things back in 1992. bothe pale yellow with the wood grain sides and the chrome rims.....IOt was so embarrasing getting a drive to school in a fish tank...lol. Now I wish I could get one for myself.
I remember a guy who lived in my area driving around back then with plastic lemons hanging in the back window with a little sign disparaging the local dealer.
The guy at 0:54 is like "dear god that is the most hideous thing I have seen in my whole life". No doubt thats how many rich people will react whenever they see a Pacer...
My first car (in 1981) was an 1977 burnt brown Pacer. Everyone called it a Moon Buggy, but I loved it! It had an aftermarket 8 track player (didnt know what those were) and towards the end, the engine would just cut off! I hated to let it go! It made me popular in my small town!
@BuckeyeSecretary I believe it was in production for 5 years. 1975-80. AMC made some mighty reliable cars. I'd love to find an early 70's Ambassador or Matador station wagon!
Good memory, but SNL was actually spoofing a Ford (or Mercury) commercial in which a jeweler cut a diamond in the back seat of an LTD (or Marquis) to prove how smooth the ride was.
also a bit funny how the car was given a hard time because it was wide and now just like than cars are being advertising as being wide. like a Pontiac G6 add not long ago
They were supposed to be revolutionary. It's sleek hood design was made so under the hood there would be a rotary engine powering the front wheels (still something pretty new for econo cars) sourced from GM, but since that went bust, they had to use the reliable, but old and overly used straight-6. At least it's rear-wheel drive, meaning it has potential. Try doing that to a Toyota Yaris!
They were making some crappy cars. I rode in a Pacer in the 70's and remember all the hype it got, looking back I can't see how anyone would want to buy a car as ugly as that one or a Gremlin, Matador, etc, etc, etc. There was an AMX for sale in my neighborhood that I would always walk by when I was 15 and poor, sigh. As far as this commercial, I remember the Ford LTD one with the diamond cutter, SNL did a skit with a baby getting a Jewish circumcision in a fake LTD ad, classic.
I remember this ad very well. That's a "Pacer X" shown in this ad, which is the "sporty" one. The ads were based on the tagline "Pacer; the first WIDE small car".
Cool commercial, and pre-FU(#!&g seat belt law I drive a 76 Gremlin myself...came with the same big ass gas tank as spoken below. Cost like $75.00 to fill it up
The Pacer has a 22 gallon fuel tank, I bought one because of gas rationing fears in the late 70's. Still have the car, it runs well, but just a weekend joy ride car now.
1975...one of the very first if not THE first Pacer ad..."no other small car can make this sandwich."
Sad part is AMC spent so much on introducing the 1974 Matador coupe and the 1975 Pacer--both of which were failures--they couldn't update the other car lines (Gremlin, Hornet, and the Matador sedan/wagon) until they were too old to be popular--and some analysts say that was one of the factors in AMC's demise...
I am a Kenoshan. I recall seeing a brand new '74 Matador coupe in someone's driveway and thinking 'hoo boy, this is not a good thing for AMC's future'.
Believe it or not, the '74 Matador coupe was named "Best-Looking New Car of 1974" by Car and Driver magazine. That was a back-handed compliment, since it was actually the ONLY new car in 1974! (All of the other models from the US companies were carryovers.)
Years later we called my best friend's GF's '74 Matador "TurtleTop" but I don't remember exactly why.
@red54321dy The Matador (along with the Pacer and others) was never a good thing for AMC's (let alone anyone else's) future. That's because what happened throughout the next decade was AMC would fade into obscurity like a classic pop band / hollywood star, never to rise again...

Wider is better.

Apparently he was not a happy AMC customer.

I remember this commercial. Nowadays, whenever I think of a Pacer, I think of the movie, "Wayne's World."

Didn't Saturday Night Live do a parody of this commercial concerning a Rabbi conducting a Briss Ceremony?

Nice ad, and the car is almost identical to mine, I just wish the guy I got it from hadn't sold the original mag wheels a few years before I got it.

One butt ugly car. Power? If you drove into the wind the car would stand still.

AMC always used pretty good actors in their commercials, I think that is James Millhollin as the butler in this ad
