I think I've watched this four times in the last 24 hours. It's the perfect depiction of the character that is Martha Jones. I've never seen the older Doctor Who series, but thus far, Martha is my favorite companion. She just conveys pure strength, persistence, and faith. Excellent role model for sure. And she's a doctor! Definitely one of my fictional heroes. The Doctor and the doctor forever!
Martha may not be my favourite companion, but she'll always be my first. She's a bloody brilliant character, light years ahead of Rose the Mary Sue, and it's such a shame that all the wonderful Martha of her was downplayed by RTD's obsession with "ZOMG!!!!1! Rose/Doctor 4EVA!!!1!!1!" and emo!Ten.
That was a fantastic fantastic look at Martha. The song itself was absolutely perfect, but your editing to it really made Martha shine as the strong person she really is. Really, that was one of the best representations of her. Lovely lovely job.
Great video and great job showing Martha's strength through all the junk she had to go through. I really think that in a lot of ways, she was the strongest and bravest of the Doctor's companions.
@youallsuck1000 I couldn't say for sure, but I'm guessing that the unfamiliar scenes to you are the ones from the episodes of Torchwood that Martha was in.
gr8 vid. the song goes well with martha. i think shes suffered slightly more than the others when it came to time with the doctor.i mean the year when the master ruled earth she must have been driven mad with the amount off death around her, and the tardis key she worn meant that some times people didn't even notice her. i havn't read the book so i wouldn't know for sure.
I love this video! :D I love Martha and Rose and Donna, but something that sets her apart from the other companions is her Independence and never giving up, and I think she understands the Doctor better than any of the companions have before, because even if Rose loved him and knew about the Daleks, and even if Donna was the Doctor-Donna, Martha knew the Master, and at the end of series 3 she left, understanding she'd never be able to settle down--and that's what i admire about her the most
really great! mesmerising! There are two tragedies in life - one is to lose your hearts desire, the other is to gain it. (George Bernard Shaw) Martha Jones gained and lost her hearts desire so many times. She is a true soldier.
Martha Jones was the best companion for the Doctor. She stuck by him no matter what even putting up with racist crap in 1913. If it as me getting shit from those guys (i would've got abuse coz Im Irish n the english havent really liked us irish).
Freema is my favoutire actress and i want to be an actress too and work alongside her someday.
I adore Martha, she did so much, much more than Rose could and I hated Doc for going on about Rose in front of her it just peed me off :[. If you think of all she did, esp. in the finale, 42, etc, and human nature/the family must have been incredibly hard for her. Martha's beautiful, strong, smart and capable, and I prefer her over Rose any day :)
Great video, 5stars and favourite, well done! Martha was brilliant despite just being a 'plot device' between Rose and Donna, she was much more than that but the Doctor never really saw her.
In David's defense he does not write Who. Some writers could not write Martha: too PC, or because they knew she was transition they didn't try. Russell had vision: Smith and Jones. But take the Shakespeare code. 1599 Queen Liz tried to banish the 87 black people in the UK; sold to the Spanish to ransom English prisoners. The writer either ignored or sugar coated unpleasant historical facts and created a silly PC moment when he could have used it; although the witch story was cute.
I agree with this. Martha Jones was more of a plot devise than a character. She was there to be the companion in between Rose and Donna, they knew she would only be there as a companion for the one season so they used her as someone for everyone to compare Rose to, instead of treating her as an individual in her own right. It's really sad. I don't think they expected people to like her as much as people did.
Davis knows die hard fans like to "Ship" and bicker even though the whole "one woman is better for the Doctor romantically" shipping is mysogynistic. The Doctor doesn't have to be responsible for his treatment of Martha or Rose. Davis' Martha in Smith and Jones was top notch stuff though. Davis says he always planned for the character to go to Torchwood, which is a more adult orientated, sexier, darker show. Too bad Freema got a better offer. I like Martha.
The BBC and ITV are rivals and they were none to pleased that Freema, along with a writer from Torchwood, took jobs in British Law & Order at ITV. Those false rumors that Freema was fired pertained to the end of Series 3 when Cathy Tate was hired for Series 4. Freema did some of Series 4 but I agree with others that the Series should have been all hers, she earned it. Reminding people shut-up a few who accused Freema of being disloyal to the show when it works both ways.
Sun rumors. BBC are business people. BBC I has nice article about her performance in Little Dorrit; they mention her featured role in the upcoming BBC series Survivors and her Law & Order Role. But there is a new Doctor for TW. BBC knows the more exposure Fremma gets all the more attention she brings to the BBC projects she's in.
BTW I guess it was one of the Who writers who recommended Freema for L&O UK. She looks good in Barrister's Robes. There are promo pictures now.
Freema is meeting her obligations to the BBC as she already had Little Dorrit and Survivors in the can. The BBC over-reacted by removing her from Torchwood out of spite, while Dr. Who hadn't been kind to her character for some time. A backlash was forming against the BBC as her role on Dr. Who was reduced to almost nothing, and the fans wanted her stay but agreed she had every right to get another job. I agree that Freema does look good in the wardrobe for her new role.
It's all over the web that Obama is a Muslim--and that is an absolute lie. It was all over the web that Freema was fired, but that was wrong--she was back in Torchwood and WHO. Freema took time to do the Torchwood radio special, she still does promos. I like Freema and is glad she gets to strech her chops beyond "He's the doctor and I love him..." I'm looking forward to Survivors-made by the Who people. You don't get rid of someone by giving them a starring row in another series.
I love this vid, it highlights what is so awesome about Martha and focuses on her bravery and heroism as she does mostly thankless tasks that save the world, and don't even win her the Doctor. Sniff, sniff. Martha you rock. Love the video, love Martha. She needs her own show.
This video is really touching. It's also a tribute to the great acting of Freema Agyeman as she goes through a range of emotions and we begin to feel her pain. I know David Tennant is a great actor but he seems so smug and stiff with Freema in those two episodes of Series 4, while she's still kind of pouring her heart out. It's kind of sad really but good video none the less.
Like the Video too. Love Martha. Rose & Donna too.
I love Martha's strength and compassion. She was able to pick herself up, dust off a useless crush and move on to something real.
If speaking Journey's End when you talk of David being a little stiff with Freema? I agree. They were reserved. Maybe the writers wanted avoid fans blaming Martha when the Doctor dumped Rose at Bad Wolf Bay? Maybe they wanted to be clear that the Docor didn't choose one over the other?
Why do people keep saying that Martha had a "crush" on the Doctor? Martha is not a child, she's an adult and a proper MD to boot. Martha fell in love with a man that pursued her before he flipped the switch once he got her hooked in as his new companion. The Doctor told Donna he ruined half of Martha's life and that it was all his fault but he never says a word to Martha, he just leaves her to deal with it. I don't think well of the Doctor, his actions were cowardly.
Adults have crushes. For me the important thing was Martha was able to put her feelings in perspective and move on. If the Doctor thinks he ruined her life by not returning her love, he's clueless or vain or both. Martha told Donna that her family was kidnapped and tortured, although she doesn't blame the Doctor. She was treated insufferably in 1913; worked to support him in 1969. She was alone for a year; we don't know what horrors she experienced. That's what I thought he meant.
Why do you insist that Martha's feelings for the Doctor was a "crush." Was Rose's feelings for the Doc a crush too? Why are Martha's feelings being marginalize to a crush status, as if its not that serious and can be easily dismissed? All the things you describe Martha enduring for the Doctor should be equated with her sincere love for the Doc and their relationship that he wanted to continue but Martha felt, and rightly so, that what he offered was no longer good enough.
Look at it this way. When the Doctor is with Donna, although Donna asks about Rose, the Doctor talks about Martha; Martha this, Martha that. He's bragging, proud when he says Martha fancied him; this brilliant girl fancied him. And I dare anyone to say that the look on his face when Donna told him Rose was back was happy. David looked anything but Happy. He looked downright terrified. If looks could talk it would have been a "Oh crap..." moment. That smile was slow in coming... lol
For one episode the Doc seemed contrite about Martha, but he certainly never behaved that way again the entire 4th Series, particularly when Martha made her guest appearances. The Doc appeared smug and crafty at the end of the "Doctor's Daughter" episode. When they hugged each other goodbye he seemed bored. On the commentary Tennant is recorded saying he didn't want to say "I'll call you" as the script stated, so it was deleted. It's like Tennant just wanted Freema gone.
I don't know. There was an article that said David Tennant is very mercenary, or words to that effect, about his career. Also, if you believe the press, he changes his girlfriends quite frequently, so perhaps he convinced the powers that be at Doctor Who to change his companion again; he seems to like variety. I have no proof whatsoever, but I somehow blame him for Freema's loss. From what I've read of her reaction, she seemed very sad about it. I wish her luck in her new job.
I heard that on the commentary, David Tennant asked why they took the part ouf about the 'call me' and he seemed to very much want it in, and it was RT that made the decision to do so. Not David. I blame RT for the way Martha was treated. She became a plot devise character really and I don't think the writers expected the audience to like her as much as we did.
When we focus on the on the unrequited love angle, we forget what kind of courage it took for Martha to trust the Doctor in 1913 when he had status and power, and she had none as an African/Brit servant confronting the prejudices of early 20th century Brits alone. No Jack or Mickey; just the Tardis to talk to. In The Year that Wasnt; She was alone; No Step-Dad using Torchwood. That is not to put Rose down, but Rose had backup and support. Martha didn't; She had to trust strangers.
I'm not forgetting what courage Martha has but the show feed into the "strong Black woman" sterotype that dictates Martha can endure any manner of distress, then dust herself off as if it were nothing, while of course never getting the man she loves, and oh, better luck next time. Meanwhile, Rose at least gets to keep the Doc's clone. The entire premises of bringing a Black woman on as the Doc's companion, while treating her love for him as a joke was wrong from the start.
I hear you; The Strong Black woman is gorgeous, intelligent but cannot be considered sexually attractive to the male lead. Rubbish; just ask Shatner. But consider who writes these stories; certainly not people of color, although Noel wrote a story for Torchwood. Look what happens to Tosh and Susie! But after the "needy girlfriend" comment there is subtle insult in Rose supposedly getting the Doctor substitute. You can't have me-- so here take him and fantasize. Not very kind to women.
I took Rose getting the Doctor's clone as appeasing Rose's fans so that Rose had a happy ending. I knew Rose was not coming away with nothing, but that would probably happen to Martha. What I didn't expect was that the Doc was so cold to Martha the entire 4th series, but its obvious now they wanted her character out. I'm glad the actress Freema Agyeman got a new job at ITV in another series because I don't like the way she was treated, as person, by the show either.
David would not that because The Doctor does not say things like "I'll call you." Rose fans are not appeased as Rose is not returning to Who or Torchwood; Also head writer Moffat "allegedly" said he admired the Doctor for dumping a "slightly needy girlfriend in another universe". Martha is slated to move to Torchwood. No plans at all to get rid of Freema. Peak at the BBC I Previews. Freema's on several projects including Survivors which is from one of the Doctor Who producers.
On the Dr.'s Daughter commentary video Tennant admits complaining to the director that saying "I'll call you" to Martha is not really saying goodbye. It seemed he wanted to convey something more permanent. Dr. Who was evidently through with Martha so Freema had every right to get a new job which she has in ITV's new British Law & Order. Torchwood is taping only 5 episodes, so she could have done both but RTD retaliated by removing her from Torchwood. Its all over the web.
I thought that he meant that... I mean look at the goodbye that Donna got after like four episodes. It was all in depth and everything else and Martha didn't really get a proper goodbye. Ever. The first time she did all of the talking and the second... so much was left unsaid between them.
The funny thing: the Doctor tells Jack Rose was trapped like it was an accident: Wasn't the Doctor the one who sealed the breach, and on purpose? In fact he sent Rose with Pete and like the proverbial cat, Rose came back; Pete saved her and took her back where the Doctor sent her in the first place. As he planned to send her there in the first place, whats with angst if not fan inspired? Producers knew fans would miss Rose (3 seasons) and played into that.
I agree with you that the Doctor spoke eloquently to Donna when he thought she was leaving him just around her fourth episode, but he basically said nothing heartfelt to Martha even though, in Timelord time, Martha spent years with him.
i think this vid is almost perfect i love the song and the clips you realy used some great clips! but the only thing i'm missing is that there's no story line in it you just picked some (good) clips with martha and putted them after each other. but for the rest i think it's amazing keep on the work!
wow...that was absolutly amazing. I loved it. So great. I love Martha. She might be my favorite but I find it hard to compare the companions. Great Job!
I love this. Martha always seemed to me to be one of the bravest of the Doctor's companions, if not THE bravest. And this video really showed that. Wow. Amazing.
WOW!!, great video. Im in love with Freema Agyeman, she is the most perfect thing in the universe!!. I hate Rose *sorry Rose fans* but i love Donna though. And another thing why do people say that Martha waent good in series 3 of Dr Who, she was the best in series 3 of Dr Who IMO.
Aaagh, no, sorry, I gave you a thumbs down when I meant to give you a thumbs up!!! Darn, that happens all the time!!! Sorry. Totally agree with you, by the way!
gosh, i dont even know what words can describe this... oh i know!!! brilliant! awesome!! amazing!! the editing, song and just all-around WONDERFUL!!! 5 stars, favorited, and going in my playlist of "My Absolute Favorite Videos" AND going in my Vlog!!!!
Wow. Probably the best Martha vid ever. I never like Martha as a companion she was too, 'poor me he will never like me' but when she was on Torchwood she was phenomanal and when she was on season 4. I think she would have been a great companion if it hadn't been directly after Rose.
No Jack or Mickey; just the Tardis to talk to. In The Year that Wasnt; She was alone; No Step-Dad using Torchwood. That is not to put Rose down, but Rose had backup and support. Martha didn't; She had to trust strangers.

To Bobsyermomsuncle,
I'm not forgetting what courage Martha has but the show feed into the "strong Black woman" sterotype that dictates Martha can endure any manner of distress, then dust herself off as if it were nothing, while of course never getting the man she loves, and oh, better luck next time. Meanwhile, Rose at least gets to keep the Doc's clone. The entire premises of bringing a Black woman on as the Doc's companion, while treating her love for him as a joke was wrong from the start.
Lucille7777 3 years ago
I hear you; The Strong Black woman is gorgeous, intelligent but cannot be considered sexually attractive to the male lead. Rubbish; just ask Shatner. But consider who writes these stories; certainly not people of color, although Noel wrote a story for Torchwood. Look what happens to Tosh and Susie! But after the "needy girlfriend" comment there is subtle insult in Rose supposedly getting the Doctor substitute. You can't have me-- so here take him and fantasize. Not very kind to women.

To Bobsyermomsuncle,
I took Rose getting the Doctor's clone as appeasing Rose's fans so that Rose had a happy ending.
Lucille7777 3 years ago
David would not that because The Doctor does not say things like "I'll call you." Rose fans are not appeased as Rose is not returning to Who or Torchwood; Also head writer Moffat "allegedly" said he admired the Doctor for dumping a "slightly needy girlfriend in another universe". Martha is slated to move to Torchwood. No plans at all to get rid of Freema. Peak at the BBC I Previews. Freema's on several projects including Survivors which is from one of the Doctor Who producers.

To Bobsyermomsuncle,
On the Dr.'s Daughter commentary video Tennant admits complaining to the director that saying "I'll call you" to Martha is not really saying goodbye.
Lucille7777 3 years ago

To trytofly,
I agree with you that the Doctor spoke eloquently to Donna when he thought she was leaving him just around her fourth episode, but he basically said nothing heartfelt to Martha even though, in Timelord time, Martha spent years with him.

I love this. Martha always seemed to me to be one of the bravest of the Doctor's companions, if not THE bravest. And this video really showed that. Wow. Amazing.

Ohhh that's a brilliant song for Martha.
I really thought she was brilliant in Torchwood and sooo much more brilliant this time around with the Doctor.
Although...I really don't think she's over him yet ;)

really really good! Quite a sad song for a upbeat character but this was done beautifully.

Brilliant! Even a non-Martha fan would love this, I'm sure. Brilliant editing 5*s and favourited...

Wow. Probably the best Martha vid ever. I never like Martha as a companion she was too, 'poor me he will never like me' but when she was on Torchwood she was phenomanal and when she was on season 4. I think she would have been a great companion if it hadn't been directly after Rose.
