I own a 2008 land rover range rover sport and I love it to death. I can take it off road whenever I want, despite it being more a of "road SUV." I honestly love land rover way more than hyundai.
i go thru a car every year and a half i'm outside sales..i have had Toyota.Acura Honda..and all of them have had something go wrong with them..this is the first time i have owned a Hyundia...and it has Nothing go wrong...i have so far over 17 thousand on a 2010 and nothing...Acura had the altinator go out the Camery had trany problems slipping..and Honda with its cylinder management surged..terrible..Hyundai is next to Toyota in customer satisfaction
Once again, Land Rover is a nice car, luxury and with great off road performance, but it is too expensive for the low level of reliability it suffers from. A Porsche Cayenne can do same or more, with a higher level of reliability. In the other hand, Santa Fe is not that expensive, is not at that level of luxury, but it holds way better reliability, very good looking, safe, good representative of the crossover segment and it is a very complete car for the price.

@pattycarljackson Santa fe's are poorly built, korean pieces of shit, that cost more long term. Not only are they smaller than an LR3, but they only seat 5 people (The LR3 taking 7). For off road, the LR3 has a low range gear box. The Santa Fe does not. With LR3 being built with actual metal, compared to the plastic Santa Fe, it will last a hell of a lot longer than the Korean also. Anything else?

This was my first European car, I have always owned Japanese vehicles and have never had warranty issues...BTW Hyundai/Kia scored higher in reliabilty polls then Audi/BMW/Toyota etc. whilst I would prefer the Land Rover, the Hyundai has exceptional reliablilty....I know as we I co-mange a fleet of over 400 where I work.

02 Santa Fe, 150K miles, Great shape and still starts, drives and handles like the day I got it. Trust me I was skeptical as well but I'm glad I bought it and I will recommend it to any one doing normal on road driving. For off road of course go for the LR3.
People this is just a commercial. But any way my 2002 Santa Fe is in a good shape despite having 150K miles. Took it for oil change few days ago and Midas mechanic did a total inspection and says the car is in great shape compared to it's high mileage. This truck drives, handles, and shifts just like the day I first got it. it is not in the same class as the LR3 of course but it's surely does what I ask it to do at any given time without ever letting me down. Now what can we ask for?...
LR3 is not a Defender and I am sure it wont be able to take a real ROCK CLIMBING situation, since it is more luxury than functional, its performance is similar to a Cayenne or a Q5 in off road. Now, talking about the Santa Fe, it is an affordable, well equiped SUV, not a rock climber, but IT HAS A GOOD off road performance for regular bad roads, river crossing, and some muddy situations. It has a very good riding on highway and it WAY MORE FUEL EFFICIENT. It offer enough equipement ans safety...
Basically, both cars are comparable because they are going to be used for the same purpose, either a soccer mom or a family or a regular guy that wants a SUV, to load a lot of things with a good off road performance and tranction, without getting into the Defender/FJCruiser/Patrol/Wrangler category. So, at this point is about HOW MUCH MONEY YOU WANT TO PAY FOR A CAR LIKE THAT. Being objective THERE IS NO SHIT ON HYUNDAI, all new models are very good and Reliable, specially Santa Fe...
Land Rover is a good brand, Defender and Discovery are very good off roaders, no doubt, but the LR3 is like the Freelander, nothing special in terms of off roading. For me, both are good, but If you have more than 40 grands to buy them and deal with the operational cost, fine, go for LR3. If you want to have a good car, functional, reliable and with a low operational cost, and to dont want to put more than 25 grands, get a Santa Fe.
I could say the LR3 has a better off road performance, taking in consideration the brand fame and facts, but it is not as good as previous Discovery models, and as I said, for that price, almost no LR3 owner will test in real terms what his 40+grands SUV is capable to do or not. May be thats why it is getting compared with Santa Fe. As I said, both are good, but everthing depends on budget and what you want them for.

LR3 is a very expensive British SUV, with a very bad fuel economy, with a lot of luxury features, and the most probably, most of the owner will never ever put it on an off road situation. BTW, the Land Rover brand has a low reliablity rank since it always suffers from minor gadgets issues like little buttons that stop working and things like that. I dont know if it has a real off roader structure BODY ON FRAME, but for sure it's intended to be used 90% in city driving...

See different strokes for different folks. I don't feel like tinkering or doing anything. I want my car to be reliable. I don't want to be stuck on the side of the road at midnight with my son in the backseat. I don't find the Santa Fe boring at all either. I chose carefull from a range of 4x4/SUVs I was interested in. I settled on the Santa Fe because I really like the look of it, it was super comfortable with a good safety rating and excellent reliability (there's a host of awards to prove it)

I beg to differ. I was dubbious too, but bought a brand new tucson and it performed very well for the last three years. The service at the dealership has been very good and the car never let me down. Took it through sand dunes, in the mud, on the beach (in soft sand) and it drove very well on tarmac. Hyundai has come a very long way. Check it out for yourself.

If we're talking about offroading then the LR has the upperhand. But reliability, economy and agility, most Santa Fe's can beat the LR. I was skeptical to try an 02 Santa Fe but it has never let me down. Just change oil, feel up the tank and go where ever you want.

i go thru a car every year and a half i'm outside sales..i have had Toyota.Acura Honda..and all of them have had something go wrong with them..this is the first time i have owned a Hyundia...and it has Nothing go wrong...i have so far over 17 thousand on a 2010 and nothing...Acura had the altinator go out the Camery had trany problems slipping..and Honda with its cylinder management surged..terrible..Hyundai is next to Toyota in customer satisfaction

Once again, Land Rover is a nice car, luxury and with great off road performance, but it is too expensive for the low level of reliability it suffers from. A Porsche Cayenne can do same or more, with a higher level of reliability. In the other hand, Santa Fe is not that expensive, is not at that level of luxury, but it holds way better reliability, very good looking, safe, good representative of the crossover segment and it is a very complete car for the price.

While you say Hyundai models "falls appart, even the new models" let me tell you what, in my familiy we only buy the Two H's : Honda and Hyundai. Our Accent and Elantra have been as reliable as our CR-V and Civic. Both Hyundais running like day one.

@pattycarljackson Santa fe's are poorly built, korean pieces of shit, that cost more long term. Not only are they smaller than an LR3, but they only seat 5 people (The LR3 taking 7). For off road, the LR3 has a low range gear box. The Santa Fe does not. With LR3 being built with actual metal, compared to the plastic Santa Fe, it will last a hell of a lot longer than the Korean also. Anything else?

This was my first European car, I have always owned Japanese vehicles and have never had warranty issues...BTW Hyundai/Kia scored higher in reliabilty polls then Audi/BMW/Toyota etc. whilst I would prefer the Land Rover, the Hyundai has exceptional reliablilty....I know as we I co-mange a fleet of over 400 where I work.

02 Santa Fe, 150K miles, Great shape and still starts, drives and handles like the day I got it. Trust me I was skeptical as well but I'm glad I bought it and I will recommend it to any one doing normal on road driving. For off road of course go for the LR3.

People this is just a commercial. But any way my 2002 Santa Fe is in a good shape despite having 150K miles. Took it for oil change few days ago and Midas mechanic did a total inspection and says the car is in great shape compared to it's high mileage. This truck drives, handles, and shifts just like the day I first got it. it is not in the same class as the LR3 of course but it's surely does what I ask it to do at any given time without ever letting me down. Now what can we ask for?...

LR3 is not a Defender and I am sure it wont be able to take a real ROCK CLIMBING situation, since it is more luxury than functional, its performance is similar to a Cayenne or a Q5 in off road. Now, talking about the Santa Fe, it is an affordable, well equiped SUV, not a rock climber, but IT HAS A GOOD off road performance for regular bad roads, river crossing, and some muddy situations. It has a very good riding on highway and it WAY MORE FUEL EFFICIENT. It offer enough equipement ans safety...

Land Rover is a good brand, Defender and Discovery are very good off roaders, no doubt, but the LR3 is like the Freelander, nothing special in terms of off roading. For me, both are good, but If you have more than 40 grands to buy them and deal with the operational cost, fine, go for LR3. If you want to have a good car, functional, reliable and with a low operational cost, and to dont want to put more than 25 grands, get a Santa Fe.

I could say the LR3 has a better off road performance, taking in consideration the brand fame and facts, but it is not as good as previous Discovery models, and as I said, for that price, almost no LR3 owner will test in real terms what his 40+grands SUV is capable to do or not. May be thats why it is getting compared with Santa Fe. As I said, both are good, but everthing depends on budget and what you want them for.

Ok lets put it straight. LR3 is a very expensive British SUV, with a very bad fuel economy, with a lot of luxury features, and the most probably, most of the owner will never ever put it on an off road situation. BTW, the Land Rover brand has a low reliablity rank since it always suffers from minor gadgets issues like little buttons that stop working and things like that. I dont know if it has a real off roader structure BODY ON FRAME, but for sure it's intended to be used 90% in city driving...

See different strokes for different folks. I don't feel like tinkering or doing anything. I want my car to be reliable. I don't want to be stuck on the side of the road at midnight with my son in the backseat. I don't find the Santa Fe boring at all either. I chose carefull from a range of 4x4/SUVs I was interested in. I settled on the Santa Fe because I really like the look of it, it was super comfortable with a good safety rating and excellent reliability (there's a host of awards to prove it)

I beg to differ. I was dubbious too, but bought a brand new tucson and it performed very well for the last three years. The service at the dealership has been very good and the car never let me down. Took it through sand dunes, in the mud, on the beach (in soft sand) and it drove very well on tarmac. Hyundai has come a very long way. Check it out for yourself.

i dunno what kind of owners r those!! I am one proud owner of my LR3, and I tell you... superb quality, good engine (v8), excelent off-road capability, spacious... luxurious... what else are you looking for an all terrain vehicle?
Hyundai is just an MPV, 7 seater, with big suspension. It looks cool, and youth orientated... nothing more than that! dont put it in the dirt or sand!!! It is not a SUV!

Lets get it straight. Santa fe is a bootleg of the nissan murano crossover. LR3 has 5 star rating in crash test. It won 2005 motor trends suv of the yr. Hyundai will never live upto offroad. HAHA lets see your stupid korean vehicle playing submarine. or cross a muddy lake, can't race on icy north sweden, I bet it can't even tow. the land rover is amazing, who wants a crappy plastic bag like a santa fe when there is a land rover, i mean sorry are'nt these cars called 4X4's which means off roading when the santa fe would lose, it probally could'nt get up a hill, the dashboard would come off knowing the bad quality you get from cars made in america (and no the land rover is not made in america it is made in england!)

If we're talking about offroading then the LR has the upperhand. But reliability, economy and agility, most Santa Fe's can beat the LR. I was skeptical to try an 02 Santa Fe but it has never let me down. Just change oil, feel up the tank and go where ever you want.

these two cars are in completely different classes...the land rover is a mid-large size suv, and the santa fe is a small-mid range suv...thats not a fair comparison
