What you speak of is Catholicism, which was established as the state religion of Rome, however it was not "made" by Rome. Catholicism is paganized Christianity. That is how some Christianity became a "religion" rather than a relationship with the Creator.

Not sure how it is ironic. First, the whole religion is based on death and sacrifice. The first half of the Bible has tons of bloody and violent scenes. And how does a certain sound of music justify what someone believes? The most ironic thing is most black metal artists, who say they wont be "sheeps" and "conform" like christians. Yet most follow the same doctrine and use the same symbols, and dress and write the same lyrics. Seems like they are a little like "sheeps" themselves.
