  • Great sounds! You tone quality is excellent (even though the sound gets distorted because the volume is too high)

  • hmm, from what i have learned from my teacher over the last 5 years is the tone should be anonymous, if you listen to a really good djembeplayer you will hear that you almost just hear the slap and bass

  • @TheHivem1nd - I don't know who your teacher is, but I strongly strongly disagree. My teacher, Famoudou Konate, one of the greatest masters of the djembe, has huge tones. Powerful, deep, and rich. I'd say that having clear tones and slaps are much more important than the bass note on a djembe, because when you're playing with dununs (bass drums), the bass note on a djembe is nearly inaudible. Tones are king, and if you don't have big tones, you don't yet know the voice of the djembe.

  • @tylerwyler77 well, my point was really just that in a djembe the Slap and the bass is the "melody" while the tone is more like just filling really. this is my opinion tho

  • Thedrum sounds nice but I'm afriad the gentleman hasn't ensured that the background to the video is nice and tidy. See his coat slung above the drum in the background - thats really sloppy! The bloke in the other expert village video with the shorts is much better because he's got a whole load of drums in the background and its pretty obvious that he knows what he's talking about because he looks like the part. This guy can't know anything because he's waering a strippy shirt.

  • You forgot to end on the signal! haha

  • I know that rythem, Its pretty simple but with ALL fingers closed it would sound sharper on the "tone" hits and fingers closed for slap hits :)

  • fingers open for figner hits.. my bad

  • this is the first "expert" village guy that knows any thing about any thing that I know about. They should turn the texas guy into this guys drum skin. He knows about Djembe!!!!!

  • well at least this is the first player on expertvillage who has a clue as to how to get the right hand tones. other than that it's rather pointless

  • this is sh1t! this isnt a fuck!n tutorial

  • Hey deanshortuk, where's your clip for a comparison?

  • comparison?! wtf i said this isnt a tutorial.

hes posted a video and called it a how too and its just some guy playin a very basic rhythm and dull solo. the info on this video says 'How to play solos on Djembe African drums' but this doesnt give you ANY info/help/ideas for playing solo at all

  • He does say it's an EXAMPLE. If you seriously think you can learn how to solo on the djembe from Youtube videos, then you are sadly mistaken. It takes YEARS of practice and study (with real teachers) to properly master this instrument. No amount of 'jamming' in hippy drum circles nor watching hours of video made by white guys will teach you. Mind you, Michael Markus is one of the ONLY white guys who really knows this instrument - the solo he plays here is the real thing. You need to get a clue.

  • Correct me if im wrong but the title is

'How To Play West African Drums : Playing Solos on Djembe African Drums'

at what point does he tell you how to do anything?! And archetypo fuck off with the whole white guys thing it makes fuck all difference what colour your skin is

  • If you can't learn that solo from what he's showing you here, then you have a LOT more work to do on the basics. And you're right - skin colour makes no difference. Entitlement and disrespect are ugly no matter what colour the skin.
