They're such an awesome band ! Great to see how respected they are in Texas and the World today ! I heard Hot Smoke in 1981 when i was 16 ,..and it moved me to want to play music more than the Who, Sabbath, Rush, or any group -
This sounds like a cut from one of their albums and not from the original 45, however it's still one of the best B-sides from the late great swinging 60s. Back in the 1960s a lot of groups would record two versions of an A-side and B-side. One for the original 45rpm release and the other for the latter album release. I have the original 45 version of this song and it's a little more raw and not as clean sounding. Still a great tune!
Ah, lots of memories. The Austin scene centered around the Vulcan Gas Co., a psychedelic drive on Congress Ave., just twelve blocks from the State Capitol. That place was always cooking (pun intended) with Bubble Puppy, 13th Floor Elevators, Conqueroo, and maybe the Lavender Hill Express, who opened for Janis Joplin whe she played Gregory Gym. Lesser known, but very good bands from South Texas included the Zakary Thaks and Liberty Bell from Corpus Christi and Sweet Smoke from San Antonio.
The White House? The Dragg, AB records, The Armadillos,JR Reed in Congress, Mike Thorpe, Lavacca, etc. Im Paco Rubio a superfann. Please contact me sometime. Ahiaoh, ahiaoh my name is mama, etc, etc, etc Camp Mayberry, Barton Springs, oh yeah.
I have an original 45rpm of Hot Smoke and Sasafras that i used to listen to as a kid back in the 70's. A friend and me thought the name of the group was funny and use to joke about it.... This song is on the flip side but I don't ever remember listening to it.
I agree with the production. I never heard of these guys till I was listening to 3WK internet radio and they came on. Why were these guys not more popular in the late 60?
Snatched from total obscurity to relative You Tube obscurity. Is this what San Antonio gave to the World!!!!

i hate the crowded shoebox sound of their production.......they were obviously great, but needed a real producer.
