What he forgot to tell her and the reason why she had a hard time was she was trying to keep her elbows to her side, when Your'r doing a drag your elbows can't be at your side but just alittle ways in back of you behind your back.
I thought it was the wider you go on barbell curls the more you hit the inner part of the bicep (short head) and the closer grip you hit the outer biceb (long head)
Despite a lot of comments around here.. This guy knows exactly what he's talking about..! I would like such a PT.. Exactly telling you what to at every stage of the exercise.. A real 'no bullshit' fellow.. great!
This man should be legend. To say he was ahead of his time is an understatement, he had insights in the 1960s that are only beginning to be understood today. I will do my best to honor what he developed and taught
I worked as a trainer for Vince for a year or two in 1982. Quite the guy. Stubborn, irascible, ahead of his time, in many ways his own worse enemy. He died in poverty, always sort of a cult figure, never got the recognition and financial success he should have had. I miss him and I miss that extraordinary, one-of-a-kind gym; everything custom made, wood, leather...it was a small, dark, manly cave with a cast of characters as interesting as Vince. It was good to see this video.
Great to see a real bodybuilding legend tell it how he did it, a guy many years ahead of the game, when Schwarzennger came to the Usa i am led to believe Weider sent him to Gironda to sharpen up his training?
i would imagine one would have to lower ones poundages to do this version properly, will have to give it a go now i have seen it, Vince's own physique at his best was magnificent, he took 'cosmetic' building to a quite new high
Actually, close grip curls hit the lateral biceps, not wide grip. The only reason the exercise here can be felt in the lateral head is that the biceps are on a stretch from the elbows being pulled back. This could be accomplished much more easily by sitting on an incline bench with dumbells or by leaning against a wall with a barbell. He's trying to avoid the use of the front deltoid, but instead using the rear deltoids and muscles of the upper back. This is a ridiculous exercise, really.
Ideally...a "bodydrag" curl is a barbell curl with an underhand grip...wider than shoulder with. Keep shoulders and elbows back. The bar should literally slide (drag) up and down the front of the body. When I trained with Vince, I never came up to the neck...I stopped about nipple high...paused and squeezed biceps and than slowly returned bar a hair from very bottom. Always keeping tension on muscle. Vince liked my technique and later preferred it...he showed that he had an open mind.
This MAN is THE MAN PERIOD!!!! I wish I had the honor of being taught by one of the greatest trainers ever, maybe even THE greatest. Thank you Vince for all you have given to the sport and everyone you have helped over the years. Rest in Peace!
Man, Vince is all over that. Tough & demanding. I hear he was one ornery ol' cuss. If he didnt like you he would let you know. Perfectionist when it comes to form. If there are any more instructional videos of him doing his favorite exercises please post. He had some controversial views on exercise.
You'd be lucky if you can find any videos by Gironda. If you can find any copies of his book, "The Wild Physique", you'd be lucky. His workouts are demanding. He was the man Hollywood producers would send their actors to in order to get in shape in short spans of time- like two weeks! He was the man responsible for Arnold trimming down and getting definition. Vince promoted definition and symmetry before it was in style!
i agree with Vince, getting up in the morning its hard if you know what i mean XD wood mornings i get that alot.. .. . but yeah vince +1 . u still best trainer and great techniques. rip vince.
He harkens back to a time when men where allowed to men. Now, men have been pussified by all these complainers, hr departments, and wimps. He was the man!
jtcruzzin.....you are correct..but Vince was being easy on her because you could tell she didn't completely understand what Vince was trying to teach her. He was being gentle even though he sounded harsh.
Wow!! I don't remember Vince ever being this nice!!
When he chewed you out the only way to survive was to give it right back to him. My brother and I trained there in the early 70s. He called us The chicken fuckers from North Carolina". My brother had pretty defined biceps and upper body, and I had big calves from motocross so he mostly left us alone, but I have seen him reduce big guys to tears if they couldn't hang. Vince was sure right about one thing though...Steroids... RIP Vince
I hear Vince was one ornery ol' cuss & you had to stay on his good side or he'd let u have it w both barrels. I respect his knowledge & expertise. I do many of his exercises such as Gironda dips & BB curls. He has unusual ways of doing traditional workouts. Much of what he teaches you can see in Larry Scott workouts on YouTube. Larry was a student of Vince's. Check it out. RIP Vince.
Gironda had some excellent ideas, but he also had some downright stupid ideas too. And he was stubborn and rude as hell to anyone who questioned what he said, which is a terrible attitude to have. "The teacher who is not also the student is neither". Drag curls are one of his good ideas while refusing to have squat racks in his gym is one of his bad ideas. Neck presses is one of his good ideas and eating 3 dozen raw eggs mixed with cream is one of his really bad ideas!
What's wrong with raw eggs and cream? There's the slight chance of Salmonella poisoning and there's avandin. So buy pasteurized eggs and take extra biotin. Saturated fat and cholesterol? That's a myth that has been written about by Dr. Uffe Ravnskov, Dr. Malcolm Kendrick, and Anthony Colpo, among many others. Gironda seemed to advocate a low-carb cyclical ketogenic diet. Search for the Anabolic diet if you want to learn about a similiar diet. It seems to work for people that can stick to it.
It's true that the cholesterol thing is a myth. But he spoke about 3 dozen raw eggs mixed in cream. That's 36 eggs in a day. Wouldn't that amount of eggs make you feel like throwing up? He also advocated 100 liver tablets and 100 aminos per day. Your tongue would probably be a pale white by the end of the day if you actually did this. There's nothing wrong with any of these supplements or food, but in those amounts, it's just insane.
Quite possibly the biggest idiot in all of bodybuilding..no squat racks at his gym..no wonder it went out of buisness...and if you ever notice all of the guys he trained had no legs...including himself
The gym went out of business because Gironda died. He didn't believe in the corporate mentality at all. And the simple fact that most bodybuilders legs are disproportionate and ugly, just go to prove his philosophy. He wasn't training power lifters. He was building physiques. Tom Platz's "legendary" legs probably turned old Vince's stomach. You'd be surprised what front squatsand sissy squats can do with a fraction of the weight size monsters go for, leaving a leaner, more attractive leg.
yeah well ask every IFBB pro about squatting and 99.9% of them will tell you that is how you build legs...vince was a stubburn man who just never got it...that was his down fall and why beside scott and makkaway never produced any champions..just look at vince's legs for an example...the man needed to hit a sqaut rack.....he was a nut case who would never ever take any constructive criticism...he had no clue
by the look of those ugly steroid pumping monstrosities who 99.9% of the sane population think look like disgusting freaks.....I wouldn't ask them a damn thing.
Reality check for a very out of touch musclehead.....no one want to have tyranosaurus lizard legs
go find a different sport then junior....i found that the people who dislike squating usually are not very good at it...face it Vince had NO legs...he looked down right silly in shorts..and he was very stubburn...that is why all the pros trained at golds and worlds in the 70's and 80's
Vince was able to manage strict hacks with 700+ lbs. Show me a back squatter who can top that. Besides Scott and Makkaway, ever hear of a guy from Austria named Arnold Schwarzenegger? He was a big but smooth classless bulk when Joe Weider sent him to Vince (yes, check it out) to get him in shape. Steve Davis, Carl Weathers, Don Howorth, and myriad of Hollywood celebrities (who lack the endemic muscular bloated steroid gut so in vogue nowadays so you may not know them)...the list goes on.
yeah, but Arnold lost the Olympia to Sergio that year because he had no legs. Then he started squatting again then won the Olympia. Vince 's training can build an awesome body by anyone's standards but not by champion bodybuilding standards
Granted, the body Arnold built later on by training as everyone else did won him titles, but that was because of the evolving judging standards. It's gone even more so in the last couple decades, with wide bony jaws, lean but bloated steroid guts, athletes dying, etc. All the result of neurotic obsessions and mentally a.w.o.l. usage of steroids, hgh, hcg, insulin, clenbuterol, diuretcs... All of which, likewise, Vince would have none of his trainees (and never of course himself) partake.
that why i stated an awesome body by anyones standards and not by champion bodybuilding standards. Vince did have a great looking physique on the cover of "The Wild Physique". Still I wouldn't recommend anybody stop squatting.
To each his own, I suppose. For those who like what the barbell back squat does for you (presumably, the variety of squat you refer to as your recommendation), it remains an option. I admire powerlifters but remain a (natural) bodybuilder, myself. Ron Kosloff does a better job than I can of elaborating on the debate, entitled "The Ultimate Decision: Bodybuilder or Weightlifter", on his website.
Arnold lost to Sergio because he just was never as good...his legs after training with Vince were far superior to previously.
Vince enhanced the cuts whilst losing none of the size, and without squats.
He was not against squats for everybody. He admitted Sergio built great thighs using primarily the squat, but also said that for many people heavy back squats buld upper thigh and glutes, and not mid-lower thigh, which they do.
I think one of his most remarkable students was Eric Estrada, the studio execs wanted him to "look" like he had actually passed the rigorous California Highway Patrol physical tests, PLUS the police officer training school- and with Vince, he did!!!!
Nothing wrong with Gold's and World, but the truth is, many trained there instead of Vince's because the pros relied on steroids, something Vince detested. They were totally impatient to his teachings of a beautiful body through isolation exercises. And his dietary guidelines were murder to the less-disciplined. Those who stayed with him, reaped rewards!!!
Not totally true, Vince didnt like HEAVY BACK SQUATS as he thought they pile on mass to the glutes and hips and he disliked bench press as he thought it was 90% frontal delt.
He used front squats and sissy squats, and bench press to neck and wide bar parallel dips instead which he thought were superior pec developers.
This is fantastic, thanks for uploading! Over 10 years of bodybuilding nothing has come close to the success I achieved with Gironda's methods. They work full stop. He was years ahead of his time and a genius

In fact Gironda rightly thought that back squats were ok,but only for slim hipped men, otherwise they would pile on pounds in all the wrong places.
He also loved hack squats.

Yes its true.
Squats he felt were basically an arse and upper thigh builder...that is heavy back squats...which is true.
For chest he much preferred neck press to bench press,as do i...a much better and effective exercise.
Bench press is an ego builder.
