He's right, this isn't really Castlevania, not in the old style or in it's canon. What James just played is basically Castlevania 1 but like a whole new story. As for it's style, it doesn't have any of the old monsters to fight like Frankenstien, Mummies, or even Dracula.
I like how James does his playthroughs. Having played through and beaten the game on Knight difficulty, its not some direct homage to the original story and some parts of the game could have been better but its a game you can enjoy.
I agree about the "not Castlevania" part. I didn't bother me before, because there was always some connection: A classic array of enemies, references to other games, or a neat remake of Vampire Killer or Bloody Tears.

I honestly don't mind clone games. Sure the original game is always better, in this case, a game like God of War come to mind. That doesn't mean other people inspired by the original add things they love and take away things they hate and you get unique perspectives on the same idea. This is why I love gaming! It evolves and changes. I like it that way.
The game is very much like the God Of War games when it comes to the gameplay, If you like castlevania, god of war and great graphics you'll like it.
But it steals ideas from god of war to the point that it bothers me, look at the boss battle with the giant snow creature in this game and compare it to the cronos battle in GOW3 they are exactly the same appart from the apperance.
Ok good, I was worried that James was gonna give this a thumbs up. The graphics and narration were fantastic in this game, but the rest fell flat. God of War did everything this game did but better and earlier. God of War has a simplistic but visually appealing combo system, and gripped the "epic" much better.
This game was kind of a joke for me, a wolf in sheep's clothing under the guise of Castlevania. It was decent, right up til the "secret" ending. I laughed so hard after the credits.

@xXShadowEyesXx Should'a explained in more detail, the newer consoles attempt to make the graphics appear 3 Dimensional FAIL in my eyes(literally, my eyes and vision). Its very hard for me to judge and calibrate the distance needed to jump from some of the platforms. Hardest parts in the Wii games I 've faced involved jumping, and the shifting(or not shifting) of the camera angles in play. i mean who could play a game when sometimes yer character is blocked and not even in the camara shot
If you thought that second boss was annoying by try Shadow Of The Colossus. You go from place to place fighting NOTHING BUT bosses that are what that second one was based off of. It's a good game but there are only the 13 bosses and a vast landscape and gets a bit stale.

I do own the game and I do like it, but in no way does it feel like I'm playing castlevania. The music sounds like lord of the rings, the enemies are from lord of the rings and I cant help but think that none of the programmers who worked on the original worked on this game.

@sMCCarthyTV1 Well, knights were the elite warriors of their day, so I guess having Knight as the higher difficulty level seems to make that level more exclusive and elite itself. Also, a paladin (the hardest difficulty setting here being Paladin) was usually treated as an elite knight, so the pattern makes sense to me.

GKH seemed like a great game at 1st but l heard there are way too many flaws to make it as interesting as the other vanilla games : there is no story whatsoever, can't get your characters back once you sent them to war, there are no emotions at all (no way to feel an immersion) and the game is made for an online experience (l'd rather play this kind of games on my own). lt's only in jap right now so l haven't tried it or anything but doesn't look good.

Many games are inspired by others, but DMC really can't be compared or said to have inspired, it isn't that great for it to inspire but creative where it wasn't inspired.

The graphics are incredible and the story is entertaining, but there is actually VERY little real game, except, as AVGN says, the bosses and the silly-ass puzzles. If I wanted puzzles, I woudl go to Wal-Mart and buy one. I wanted demons and monsters and castles and dungeons and...and...stuff that is NOT in this PIECE OF CRAP game! #FAIL!
Not sure why people are complaining so much about "Aw man this game copies XXX it's shit" as if it was something new. Most games take things from other games. As James even said, Castlevania has taken mechanics from Metroid and even megaman. God of War copied things from Devil May Cry and Shadow of the Collossus. Saying Lord of Shadows was like God of War would be like saying Halo is like Call of Duty because they're both first person shooters.

I sympathise with AVGN, I suck at most new games too. What I miss about the old days of gaming more than anything is that you could more or less pick up any game and play. You didn't have to worry about all this 'touch sensative' stuff and 360 degree turns. Some games (that AVGN has pointed out) like simons quest had cryptic elements and megaman was pretty massive, but they were all linier and not too difficult. Now you have to devote your life to a game in order to get anywhere with it.
I think the games okai but too inoriginal. my only gripes about the game are that there are too many quick times events like god war, the attacking style is almost carbon copy of god of war,the ice titan sequence is pretty much straight out of shadow of the colossus, the puzzles remind me a little too much of games like LOZ twilight princess or RE 4 and like you said, no hearts *sad face*.
alot of people disagreed with me on this, but when I first played this game, it felt like I was playing God of War, or Dante's Inferno perfect example at 1:57.

if you ask me this game looks good but it just looks like another god of war or dynasty warriors or something.The button mashing sequences remind me of the resident evil 4 button pressing sequences,where if you dont press the right button combinations at the right time,you die.Fight krauser or salazar and you'll know exactly what im talking about. @yashamaruism That or God of War since there are A LOT of QTE as finishing moves. lt could have been a good game since it's inspired from the best of the genre but like he said in the vid, this game could have worn any other title since the franchise seems to have less and less in common with the original games. They should keep those games in 2D, seriously : they have no reason to stop using it since they can make flawless games like Odin Sphere or Muramasa.

GKH seemed like a great game at 1st but l heard there are way too many flaws to make it as interesting as the other vanilla games : there is no story whatsoever, can't get your characters back once you sent them to war, there are no emotions at all (no way to feel an immersion) and the game is made for an online experience (l'd rather play this kind of games on my own). lt's only in jap right now so l haven't tried it or anything but doesn't look good.

About Lords of Shadows
Gameplay: Rip-off (sort of) of God Of War (and a bad one, compared to GoW)
Music and Narration: EPIC
Story: Okay
Overall: I think a 8.5 is okay
Final Thoughts: The Metroidvania feeling is gone, something that many people will hate (like myself) but still is a O.K. game, I believe that most Castlevania fans will hate it (not all of them, may I add)

The only thing it got from GoW is defeating the boss and doing the whole button timing. Saying GoW is a DMC rip-off. . . No not even close- Shadow of the Colossus, Hell fuck yeah that game was amazing so GoW needed an inspiration of an amazing game in the first place.
Many games are inspired by others, but DMC really can't be compared or said to have inspired, it isn't that great for it to inspire but creative where it wasn't inspired.

Ok, let's put this all to bed right here, right now. This game SUCKS! The game play is freakin TERRIBLE! The camera is fatally flawed. The graphics are incredible and the story is entertaining, but there is actually VERY little real game, except, as AVGN says, the bosses and the silly-ass puzzles. If I wanted puzzles, I woudl go to Wal-Mart and buy one. I wanted demons and monsters and castles and dungeons and...and...stuff that is NOT in this PIECE OF CRAP game! #FAIL!

Not sure why people are complaining so much about "Aw man this game copies XXX it's shit" as if it was something new. Most games take things from other games. As James even said, Castlevania has taken mechanics from Metroid and even megaman. God of War copied things from Devil May Cry and Shadow of the Collossus. Saying Lord of Shadows was like God of War would be like saying Halo is like Call of Duty because they're both first person shooters.

I sympathise with AVGN, I suck at most new games too. What I miss about the old days of gaming more than anything is that you could more or less pick up any game and play. You didn't have to worry about all this 'touch sensative' stuff and 360 degree turns. Some games (that AVGN has pointed out) like simons quest had cryptic elements and megaman was pretty massive, but they were all linier and not too difficult. Now you have to devote your life to a game in order to get anywhere with it.

I think the games okai but too inoriginal. my only gripes about the game are that there are too many quick times events like god war, the attacking style is almost carbon copy of god of war,the ice titan sequence is pretty much straight out of shadow of the colossus, the puzzles remind me a little too much of games like LOZ twilight princess or RE 4 and like you said, no hearts *sad face*.
