  • Every player certainly has the right to play however they please. However the sound of bass played with a pic annoys me. I love the sound of fingers on bass.

Marlowe is an amazing bass player.

    No disrespect intended.

  • please tell me your amp setup and eq! I LOVE your tone man

  • Q: How many bass players does it take to screw in a light bulb?

A: Onne to screw in the light bulb, and four to say, "That's not how Jaco would have done it, dude"

That said, MarloweDK was demonstrating a jaco-LIKE bass line using different techniques

  • whats that type of bass called?

  • definitely groovier than the slap and finger version

  • What pick is that? Can you make a video tutorial for this? :)

  • It's all about throwing those "Ghost notes" into the mix! Very funky!

  • what strings do you use?

  • i taught him that. ;)

    jk.

    no really, I did.

    jk again.

  • i really love all three of the jaco like bass line versions (3 finger technique, double thumb technique, and pick technique)

    you're really versatile

i want to be just like you :)

  • i love the sound....has a nice growl to it. it sounds really good too

  • waht is your favorite bass? this ( marcus miller) ? you have +++ basses..

  • @dusthillguy well thought out way to put i enjoy playing with my penis XD

  • Sweet but rather a Helmut Hattler picking style then a Jacoist Bass line

  • No style is better than another. Every style and sound has its purpose.

Playing with a pick is good for cockin' maximum, and if you want a more 'penis'-like sound, you might use your fingers.

  • it all depends on what your playing

  • Sad but true? plectrum bass [rather than fingers] actually sounds better...... Check out Greg lake, McCart, Squire etc.

  • I love Lake and Squire, but I'd have to say the idea that plectrums sound better than fingers is neither sad nor true. (No offense to my pick playin bassists out there)

    Just a matter of opinion...

  • @martinjp1958

    And McKagan :p

  • @martinjp1958 not better ...different... you may like that sound more...but it is not better...some songs require the tonal qualities of a pick and others fingers and other slap/pop...when you figure that out you will lose your affinity for a pick and play all 3 ways as i do

  • i dont think jaco did use a pick but its a jaco style bass line, as in the left hand technique. =)

  • how many basses do you have

  • Three times the exactly same lick : D But three diffrent ways to play it. Nice x)

  • Marcus miller sig

  • your kidding right?

  • yeah! everyone who uses pick is terrible.

    sarcasm.

  • i like ryan martinie. but i also admire victor wooten. i like both there styles so i dont know witch one i wana do!

  • play em both!

  • i actualy im more a slap bass kinda guy. i like to pop it. it sounds kewl. but i dont know something. if u have an amp can u change the way it sounds for defferint styles of music? like metal to jazz to rock. is this possible or do i have to buy a special type of bass for that? the one i want is a Ibanez GSR205FM 5-String Bass Guitar. is this one anygood?

  • dude it helps to change the type of bass and the nobs on the amp like if ur playing blue or jazz u may have the tone a lil lower the bass a lil higher on the amp if ur playing punk style it sounds betetr wiht higher tone and less bass it also depnds on the bassest style if ur coveirng a song

  • The bass you want is a good beginner bass but if you want to be able to play many styles I would definitely recommend the Ibanez Atk300 or Atk305. Very versatile basses.

  • woah lol in 6 months i get a response lol! thx thou. so wats so gud about this ibanes bass? i like ibanez guitars. but never really looked into there bass intruments.

  • I've had two ibanez basses. First i got and Ibanez Gsr200 two years ago. It was a good bass but I still wanted a versatile bass so I could play Jazz, Rock, Metal, whatever I looked on the internet for a while and I found the Ibanez Atk. The bass has every You need to have great tone and versatility. I got the bass 7 months and I still love it. It sounds really good with Ernie ball strings too.

  • i've had those EXACT same 2 bases, I LOVE the ATK, it's gotta be the most versatile bass out there!

  • Yeah if u want stingray tone i would definitely switch the tone selector to the right/attack and put the bass and treble up

with mids down. Sounds just like flea.

  • thanks for all your support.

Learning how to play your instrument with different techniques is the best way to become a better player

    that and much practice=)

MarloweDK is a amazing bass player because he is so versatile

  • indeed a skilled bass player! pick rules!

  • Some styles of music, metal rock and stuff like that, may require a harder tone, and thats when i use a pick. Blues, Jazz, Funk, Soul etc. sometimes have a softer bass sound, and thats when i like to use a pick. Sometimes when i'm in a shitty mood i play stairway to heaven through my overdriven guitar amp with a pick. It's the mood, not the rules that is the dominating factor in music :)

  • I'd like to see what the left hand is doing too.

  • samthekatalyst and upsidedown guys are both right.

the band i play in had a show opening up for a signed band from MA, and afterward the bassist totally bashed me because i used a pick. He said "I have no respect for you because you arent a true bassist"

its like discriminating about someones race...rather in this sense pick, no pick...as long as you can play your instrument well...WHO GIVES A FUCK!

    thank you, that is all

    -Ace-

  • yeah, i agree with upside down.

as long as you can actually play, using a pick or not doesnt make you any less of a musician

  • If you can groove with a pick

    by all means

If you can grove with your fingers

    by all means

    if you bash either way

    your retarded

    and not a musician

saying a musician has to play there instrument any certain way is stupid

  • one more thumbs up for u, playing an instrument is to be pleasure for those who do it and for those who listen to those who play. Period.

  • @UpsideDown727 fucking AMEN to that ...retarded comments with pick no pick eh

  • Playing with a pick doesn't make you Bad

    Playing Bad makes you Bad

  • and abnormal players use a pick? xDD lol

  • This guy probably plays bass 10 times better than you. He is a true bass player too, he's got the rythm and groove that makes one

  • when bassists choose to not use picks, they just limit themselves.

  • on the other hand using pick only is even more restrictive - what i do ^^

  • The only way to be a bad player is to refuse to use any technique.

  • @UpsideDown727 Simple and correct. Great comment.

  • Soccer, lol.

  • that sounded amazing.. im not really for playing with picks but man that tone was mindblowing.... what were you running that thru? kinda sounded like the Ampeg SVX program amps...

  • I like it a lot. I invented my own bass guitar, built on a stratocaster! I wanted a guitar-scale neck b/c I play guitar. I had to sand the neck myself and build my own bridge, and order custom strings. Lots of fun though, and it works with any 6 peg pickup because some just straddle 2 pegs in the pickup.

  • Nice.

Jaco is a fucking bass God.

  • Jaco used to do this?

  • Hey MarloweDK. Love the tone you have there. What kind of amp you running? and is that a Marcus Miller sig. Fender Jazz?

    Keep it up.

  • sorry i actually read which pick. :)

  • dunlop 0.88

  • Hi MarlowDK, I've seen all of your clips now. You're a big inspiration. Please tell me, whick plektrum do you use? And how do you mute the tone,I mean it sounds almost like fingerstyle, like Francis Rocco Prestia. Groove on man and thanks for answering.

  • hey are you using a drum machine, or can u reccomend any drum loops to use

  • to Nicka:

Anything that keeps time is ok for practicing;-)

  • @Nickahlishus use ur feet :s

  • I like that very very much!

  • Please I.M. me: what is a jaco bass?

  • jaco pastorius was an amazing bassist who played a defretted jazz

  • Goes very good with the drums. This sounds like a fun jam band sound or Saturday Night Live type band. Are you muting the notes with your fret hand?

  • Man, going from slap to pic is easy, if you get switching a Pic to the top of your hand between your middle and index finger with speed. LOL it isnt easy to learn. xD

  • Wow, great playing! Such a nice tone, how did u get that sound?

  • Nice! Gonna try and play this right now.

    Thanks

  • Thanks for proving that a bass player can be funky with a pick :P

A lot of pop-culture bands today have bass players that look so mechanical when they play with a pick. You're so fluid and funky!

  • Ok, I've got nothing against pick users, but I've seen SOOO many FAMOUS bass players that use this method, and they really suck! I'm so sick of those amateurs, I wanna kill them! But I have to say you are really good, and I'm sorry for that dumb comment earlyer ...

  • to cliffthebassmaster:

Thx man, you earn respect for that(i know it wasnt me especially you were after)

You should also know that mastering the bass (becoming a true and sought after musician), involves having the ability to play different styles and with the techniques that apply to those styles.

  • @cliffthebassmaster Killing them might be a little excessive.

  • yeah i totally agree...very nice playing style :)

  • People that bashes playing with a pick are not musicians, just ignorant people. I can play phrases with a pick , that i cant do with fingers - ie distorted bass sound so much better with a pick, I also do different rhytmic stuff when i play with a pick. A true musician should master or at least respect different ways of playing an instrument

  • well said buddy! nice playing btw...love this marcus miller kinda tone!

  • I have to agree with the pro-pick stance. Just because most people don't use one doesn't mean its not a legit technique. Jean Jacque Burnel of The Stranglers uses a pick close to the pick-ups to get a higher pitched sound. A good example is the closing of the anime "Count of Monte Cristo" which he wrote and plays bass in.

  • sweet!

  • dude theres something called a pick guard so i assume most basses are made for picks too

  • oh really????? im guessin you like geddy lee right??? well news flash for ya, he uses a fender jazz bass (and he has a fender jazz bass signature series) which has a pickguard so im guessin if you think basses with pickguards suck then your actually insulting geddy lee

  • I hope you realize that by saying that only crap basses have pick guards you are calling Fender, Musicman, Modulus, Squier, Gibson, Epiphone, and many more bass's crap. That statement right there is possibly the most retarded thing ive ever heard. Plus picks dont suck, most use them for the sound they give, personally myself i use my fingers...but your seriously a retard...

  • oh and might i add rickenbakcer bass's which are definately not crap.

  • lol picking a bass gives it a sweet tone. if u can play it and make it sound good it doesn't matter what you use to make the string vibrate

  • ya it depends what kind of sound you want to get out of it.

  • y do people think picks suck. It give a different sound. So stop bitching

  • same here

  • i think most bassplayers who use a pick need to see people like you playing so that they can drill out of their heads that it doesn't have to be that root stuff all the time, there's a time and a place where it's totally appropriate but people should break away sometimes. Liked it!! *thumbs up*

  • yeah that was really cool... the pick adds a whole new dimension to playing bass,,and some songs sound better with a pick, some with fingers.Don't be single minded!(all you ppl bagging this dude)

  • JAZZ BASS!!!

  • dude wuts the tab for that and how do u do that picking i need 2 learn that

  • really?

  • nice groove you got there buddy. Long live the pick!!!

  • just saw ur other video and it looks pretty good, i take back my comment

  • i coulden't see ur one hand so for all i know this was a fake. plus jaco mostly used his fingers not a pick. But very good if real

  • sweet. more people should see this. the other bass pickers on youtube i've seen suck and this would shut up a lot of big mouths.

  • i am suprise no one has commented... just show me how to do that and i'll be happy
