The U.S. Military has never used the term, period. Magazine fed rifles are SAR's, Belt fed weapons are SAW's, Squad Automatic Weapon. Ones that chamber pistol ammo are SMG's, Sub Machine Gun. The M-2-SB and HB Browning is a HMG, Heavy Machine Gun The sooner "Assault Rifle" goes away the better. It's nonsense.

Therefore, the word Sturmgewehr is commonly mistranslated as storm rifle. The German word Sturm has many meanings, here are 13; 1.storm 2.assault 3.tempest 4.gale 5.attack 6.rush 7.squall 8.thunder 9.gust 10.turbulence 11.forward line 12.welter 13.volley. So therefore it was not the media but the germans who coined the word "assault rifle".
