you're smart, we get it, no need to prove it. you only have to prove it to yourself, most people who will watch this vid will be annoyed. im not trying to flame, i also know how the world works. people say shit that doesnt need to be said. if your smart enough to see these things, it isnt worth explaining (ecspecially not on internet). so im making the same mistake you make, right now. the difference is i know why im doing it. srry for the shitty english, im from holland. lozorcopterbamfcopter
And also, teenagers don't totally succumb to bad ideas that surround them. I'm 14, surrounded by teenagers who drink, have sex, smoke, cut, and I don't even consider doing any of it. Which is more likely to motivate you--a person online, or a bunch of people that you see every single day?
I just think it's sad that education is losing importance right now. The government complains about us being behind other countries... gee, I wonder why! XD
@TelekinesisLibra333 I'm just saying that Dan should have shown more discretion when putting his views out into the open. Thank you for your criticism. =)
@maksusername >> I wasn't trrying to CRITICIZE... I was merely pointing out my views on the subject. XDD Hah. Sorry if it sounded like I was criticizing you :)
Creativity isn't knowledge. There are people on the streets who've never been to school but can draw better than some artists in history. Yes, you probably do need proof or statement of knowledge to get a job, but jobs are steadily declining, and the value of knowledge has gone with it.There people with college educations who Walgreens because they can't find a better job.
Besides, education is steadily declining in importance. Here, education isn't being handled the way it should.
you are a little premature there buddy. dans point wasnt that the internet was the alternative, but it was used more for the bigger picture on how the world is changing. read between the lines
What if a particular teenager would be better off in trade school rather than college? Dan Brown's advice might save them from wasting valuable time and money. Keep in mind not everyone can attend college without putting themselves through significant hardship- it is expensive.
@flcadam Now, although that is a valid point for that specific rare case, it is indeed, a specific rare case. I'm not saying that EVERYONE needs to go to college, I simply stated that he shouldn't be putting these kinds of ideas into teenagers heads, watch the whole video again. =)
I know that teenagers are impressionable, but really? Dan is only stating his opinion. It is up to each person to construct their own opinion based on the facts. If they only get Dan's side, they should research more. Probably one of the most vital things you can learn to do is learn to make your own opinions. So Dan is actually helping with that.
Sigh...Look, there are several point of views when looking at this. Dan's stating his opinion, and I'm stating mine. I love Dan Brown, and I think it's totally awesome what he's doing. I merely think he should have made clearer how important education is to his impressionable viewers THAT'S ALL! I have no beef with Dan. =)
@maksusername I know. I'm not commenting on your views, I'm talking about something more general. The impressionable viewers. That's what needs to change.
Opposing viewpoints and healthy debate are pathways to truth. Both Dan and Mac have stated their opinion, for better or worse, and its up to people to pick and choose in both video what assertions they agree with and with which they disagree. IMHO, I think both made valid points worth considering.
Most university degrees are not training for specific jobs. Many are not really related to any job that graduates are likely to enter at all (e.g., liberal arts degrees).
Facts are half of education. How to implement it is the other half. Education remains largely static as in institution because this is the best way of conveying correct and useful information to large numbers of people that we know of. According to Dan you don't actually need to know good information from misinformation or know how to be able to apply information productively to get an "education" as he would call it.
@voce1489 I largely agree. However, given the accelerating rate of change, static curriculums will only lead to stagnation. Students need to contribute more in the classroom and take proactive steps to make ever class lecture and discussion more Value-Relevant and Contemporarily-Relevant.
Also, a teacher's primary objective should be to inspire their students, not upload data into their heads and test to see how well they downloaded it. No child left behind indeed.
i would not agree that he has any "responsibility" to provide his viewers, regardless of their age, with censored information and ideas simply because they may actually agree with them. he is not on prime time tv, he should be able to say what he thinks.
I believe he has a responsibility to keep people's minds open, not to supress what they are capable of. Not that he can't express his own opinion for himself, but he should have made it more clear how important education is, and what is good about the current system. =)
Dan Brown is just stating what is necessary. The education systems need to change to adapt to reality. He's not discouraging people from going to school, he's just stating what he has realized. I learn more from the internet too, there are plenty of good sources on the internet that are very reliable. He isn't telling people to drop out, he just did because he can learn a lot more than what people teach him, and I feel the same way. He makes plenty of money now, and doesn't need the degree
The systems need to change to adapt to reality? I believe that school is real enough sir. And what his opinion is, isn't what the truth necessarily is. Institutions are making sure you learn the right kind of information, something the internet can't do, as reliable as it can be. I know he doesn't need the degree, but discouraging other viewers (which I realize he wasn't trying to do) from getting an education is still wrong. =)
