FYI 90% of studio directors watch 30-45 sec of your reel, maybe a minute, and they turn the sound off. I lived in Minneapolis, I did a lot of work for Fallon Advertising there. Honestly, minneapolis doesn't have much for production. La, NY, some chicago and atl is where most work is at. It's a competitive field good luck. You kids seem to know it all so I will let you figure it out :)

I'm a total noob to video editing.. and I'll be getting After Effects CS3 in a few short days (I think), so I'm wondering which filter(s) it is that one uses to achieve this cinematic effect. I'm familiar with the de-saturation of the images, but what is it that makes it look like it's not a home video lol.

I'm not completely unfamiliar to these sorts of software as I'm an illustrative designer, but I am enough that I have to ask questions haha

Good film work, but in consideration in going professional I suggest lengthing the video down towards about 1-1/2 minute and including THE BEST work you've ever acomplished - that is what makes a good reel. The music doesn't matter, because when professionals normally stream through reels of applicants work they usually have the video on mute as only the images matter. From a personal prespective, I believe it's too slow and I felt to click out of the video, although there are beautiful clips.

is it a dolly track or a steady cam grip?

the perfectly smooth tracks are from a dolly.

the free moving shots are with a steadycam like device called the MiniDV Stabilizer.

@deelans you can just use a simple tripod as your steadycam rig for moving shots. It works amazingly well and you don't have to spend any extra cash :)

@deelans I actually get a grip of my tripod like it was a sniper rifle or something. Then the motion is only coming from my elbows if I want to, but I also use my other hand to support the whole thing (it's very very similar to holding a shotgun). I guess this needs an explanation video (which I'm probably gonna make soon to share this idea), but this works extremely well even with zoomed-in footage :)
