Kids and masters all, for starters - what John uses in his competitions is not a real sword, is made of an ultra-lite material and the edge (hamon) is thicker than an actual Iaito (blunt sword for training). Contrary to the "experts" providing opinions here, I, a judge on some of his competitions admit he has put many hours of hard training in the choreography of his dances. To the untrained eye he seems to be doing incredible feats of traditional swordsmanship. He's a great dancer and gymnast.
Guys. Do you even know wat ur talking about. This form had nothing to do with fighting skills. Thats why he threw the sword. I highly doubt that you would let go of your weapon in a fight. :)
And to respond to some of you guys, i agree that just going out and being flashy is pretty useless. You should learn to use the weapon as a weapon. However, if you can move that fast, it wouldn't take much to learn to fight well.

I try to train as realistically as I can outside my dojo by fighting and sparring with some of my friends, who train in different martial arts than I do. And Choson isn't as nice as you think he is. You may find out sooner or later, and when you do, may Siddharta Buddha guide you in life.

About him getting his ass on a platter, he has years of training and most was probably NOT for XMA. He has training in fundamentals (otherwise this would not be possible) and discipline. He would be more cool and controlled than normal in a fight and would be enough to take on other skilled opponents unless you are talking about a 10th dan master. But that person prolly has no personality left. Balance is key in all walks of life.

Actually, I'm going on brown belt, thank you very much. Yes, I am a kid, big deal, I can be as immature as I want, but one thing's for sure: I'm waaay more mature than you. I try to train as realistically as I can outside my dojo by fighting and sparring with some of my friends, who train in different martial arts than I do. And Choson isn't as nice as you think he is. You may find out sooner or later, and when you do, may Siddharta Buddha guide you in life.

I was very disappointed when I learned about Jonathan Boyd's record. Child molesting is horrible, and I'm very disappointed in him.
He was a very inspiring XMA martial artist, but now I really can't be inspired by someone who does such horrible things. I hope he finally sees the errors of his ways. And I hope and pray that the children that he molested receive the comfort and care that they need.

Nope, sorry.. this is XMA which is purely for show.
For kenjutsu, check wikipedia as the 'see also' has quite a few links to koryu schools who have kenjutsu as part of their curriculum.
You'll also find that most methods of fighting have no unneccessary movements, as they'd waste energy that could be used for something meaningful later :P (personal view, there are exceptions)

About him getting his ass on a platter, he has years of training and most was probably NOT for XMA. He has training in fundamentals (otherwise this would not be possible) and discipline. He would be more cool and controlled than normal in a fight and would be enough to take on other skilled opponents unless you are talking about a 10th dan master. But that person prolly has no personality left. Balance is key in all walks of life.
